I'm willing to give her a chance. I'd prefered them to leave her in the past and focus on creating new characters that could later become iconic but, if there is a story to be told, I'll give it a go. Jenna Russell has been highly praised, I see, so I kind of trust the role of the character in her hands.

I honestly don't think it's the worst idea. It's been 21 years and the original actress isn't ever coming back. The refusal to ever consider a recast in 20 years has caused some absolute awfulness, not least last Summer with the abysmal Mark Jnr storyline. She was really needed then.

I think that's part of what annoys people: the fact that, if she was to return (recast or original), it should have been years ago, certainly for the funerals of Mark and Pauline. I suppose on those occasions, though, they'd have only needed to be brief returns, so it made more sense, if Sue Tully refused to return, to make up an excuse as to why Michelle couldn't be there instead of bringing in a recast. She should have been there for the Mark Junior reveal given that was a storyline rather than an opportunity for a fleeting appearance, but the fact it wasn't that long ago means that it can be re-explored when she returns this Christmas. SOC's first week where he actually had a proper input was the kidnap week and I feel like he made specific changes to the plans DTC had left, and now it seems clear why he did - to revisit the storyline when he had casted someone to play Michelle.

 

On another note, that was far and away the best episode of the week and I am very much looking forward to these Christmas episodes.

Yeah it's the fact she's missed so many funerals, weddings, etc. but is back for a family Christmas that seems silly to me :lol: But I suppose if Susan Tully really wouldn't return even fleetingly it doesn't make much sense to recast a role just for one or two episodes of a funeral, recasting makes more sense if it's more permanent or at least a longer stint and they've got plans for the character. I expect it will have gone wrong in America and maybe she's out on her ear and has nowhere to go or something or she had to flee from something which would make more sense and would make up for the fact she is only coming back now.
