Posted October 4, 200618 yr All-time favourite student anthem revealed NME News NME's poll unearths most popular dancefloor fillers Arctic Monkeys' 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' has topped NME's poll to discover the most popular student anthem. The Sheffield four-piece took the top spot, fighting off stiff competition from The Killers' 'Mr Brightside' and Kaiser Chiefs' 'I Predict A Riot'. Also featured in the Top Ten were The Smiths, Franz Ferdinand and The Strokes. NME's Associate Editor Dan Silver said: "It's gratifying to see that today's students are forging their own cultural identity by adopting the likes of Arctic Monkeys, The Killers and Kaiser Chiefs as their top anthems. "It'll be interesting to see whether those bands manage to have a lasting impact in the same way that Nirvana, Oasis and The Smiths clearly have. A student night still isn't a student without a dash of Morrissey, but whether we'll be saying the same thing about Alex Turner in two decades' time remains to be seen." The Libertines' highest entry in the poll, 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun', was placed at only Number 18, while the band's biggest hit and popular student anthem, 'Can't Stand Me Now', did not feature in the Top 50. There was also a low placing for Sunblock's student disco staple, the 'Baywatch Theme', reaching only Number 33, while the relatively obscure 'Deceptacon', by Le Tigre, charted at Number 28. The Top Ten is as follows: 1. 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' - Arctic Monkeys 2. 'Mr Brightside' - The Killers 3. 'I Predict A Riot' - Kaiser Chiefs 4. 'Take Me Out' - Franz Ferdinand 5. 'This Charming Man' - The Smiths 6. 'Hounds Of Love' - The Futureheads 7. 'Naïve' - The Kooks 8. 'Last Nite' - The Strokes 9. 'Banquet' - Bloc Party 10. 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' - Joy Division For this year's Student Guide go to NME.COM/STUDENT now. Any Comments about the Top10?
October 4, 200618 yr As usual with these things, its too top heavy on recent tracks  That's just what I was thinking...
October 4, 200618 yr As usual with these things, its too top heavy on recent tracks  Well that's what we want to hear ^_^ Those three are the EXACT top three I'd personally and my union would choose :o They ALWAYS play them everytime I go and they always get my mates up onto the dancefloor :cheer: My Chemical Romance - I'm Not Okay (I Promise) and Head Automatica - Beating Heart Baby are two other big favourites of mine. :D
October 4, 200618 yr As usual with these things, its too top heavy on recent tracks  It was voted for by DJs though, and they know what students like best so it's obviously representitive!
October 5, 200618 yr I can't say I agree with the list. None of the songs will be remembered in 20 years time except a few of them imo -_-
October 5, 200618 yr I've NEVER heard this in a club. I have. Also, big deal if they interviewed DJs about this. Most of them will have only been DJing where they are for the past 6 months probably. Hence the poll results. Naive being in there is ridiculous - how do you dance to it exactly? When I was a student this poll would have been topped by either I Am the Resurrection or Supersonic probably.
October 6, 200618 yr As usual with these things, its too top heavy on recent tracks  Absolutely, the way I see this poll is that it's supposed to be an 'all time' list; but when you just look at the demographic of NME readership nowadays, it's all kids innit...?? Before you'd have a pretty healthy cross-section of ages up to and including people in their 40s, but the older (ie 25+) readership just tailed off when it started dumbing down its journalistic and editorial style.. I think if you still had many of the 'older' readership who remember their student days in the 80s and 90s, then you'd see a much different picture... No mention of Nirvana, Pixies, The Cure, The Wonder Stuff, James, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, PWEI, The Prodigy, Oasis, etc in what is supposed to be an "All-Time" poll??? Ridiculous and highly distorted.... I think if we're being totally honest, an All-Time Student Top 10 poll would look something like this....and feel free to move the order around, the placings are somewhat fluid.... 1. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart 2. The Smiths - This Charming Man 3. Oasis - Cigarettes and Alcohol 4. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit 5. PWEI - Def Con One 6. James - Sit Down 7. The Wonder Stuff - Size of a Cow 8. The Cure - Just Like Heaven 9. Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Kill Your Television 10. Pixies - Debaser ----------------------------------------------------------- Bubbling under would be: The Prodigy - Firestarter Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good.... The Strokes - Last Night Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK
October 6, 200618 yr I've NEVER heard this in a club. maybe they play it pass the point of knowing whats on when you will dance to anything  cider!! great innit

Ridiculous and highly distorted.... maybe they will turn up in the best tunes to listen to waiting for adam sandler's click to begin  they played firestarter and something by talking heads yesterday and no lucy in the frickin sky with diamonds. which i hate
October 6, 200618 yr 7. The Wonder Stuff - Size of a Cow does this go something like "you know that i've been drink a thousand time, but a least these might be the best days of my life" this was played a lot in that film by Todd Graff that was 'Camp' on film4 last night. think because people were like building their problems into a size of a cow? was wondering what it was. and from their photo in the uncut gig guide they look like they could be amy lee's new backing band   camp also had songs from that beyonce film dreamgirls http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/38/JenniferHudsonDreamgirls.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5e/Dreamgirls-cast-album.jpg didnt realize that was a big long running musical as well. only kinda know rocky horror and spamalot for the non lloyd webber stuff
October 6, 200618 yr Grimly - Debaser definitely was still being played when I went to Uni but I never ever heard the Neds, Poppies or Stuffies at student indie discos - even though I'd have loved to. What they were still playing from that era in the mid-late 90s were Stone Roses 'I am the Resurrection', Charlatans 'The Only One I Know', Blur 'There's No Other Way' and 'Step On' by the Mondays. I reckon those four need to be in the top 10...even though I prefer your choices.

Okay, my bad, I missed out Stone Roses, Mondays, Blur and Charlatans....

October 6, 200618 yr 1. 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' - Arctic Monkeys 2. 'Mr Brightside' - The Killers 3. 'I Predict A Riot' - Kaiser Chiefs 4. 'Take Me Out' - Franz Ferdinand 5. 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' - Joy Division [/b] I like most of those tracks. Why do people get wound up over these lists though? Everyone will have forgotten about this list in a week's time, by which point some magazine or TV programme will have made up yet another "Top Ten Whatever Of All Time".
