Posted August 28, 20168 yr 28th August 2016 It's Dusty for a second week on top keeping off ABC grabbing a second chart-topper of the year, ABC is just pure class, but Dusty is an anthem! That leaves Frances sneaking into the top 10, Richard Ashcroft getting a second top 20 of the year, and Banks having a good move into the 20. Highest new entry at 26 is Dua Lipa, following up number one Hotter Than Hell, (Mwah!), sounds like a hit to me! At 29 it's the sultry soul of a very Prince-ish Gallant and Bourbon, while new at 36 it's BETSY, not unlike Cher vocally, which is a good thing in my book. Big jumps for Florence and Petula Clark outside the 40, and debuts for the critically lauded RAT BOY at 56, not far ahead of another superhero-sounding Rag'n'Bone Man, presumably one turns into a rat, the other does superhero clothes for cash. RAT BOY has gone for a 70's-funk-styled rap & singing chorus, and it's fab too. Billy Fury pops in with another childhood oldie I didn't know I knew till I caught up with again the other week, very Up On The Roof-ish, and one I must have loved as a kid cos it's very familiar to me yet I don't recall hearing it much since. Lastly, welcome back Empire Of The Sun after a break, and Frank Ocean's most-commercial track off his new album, featuring Beyonce. He even samples The actual Beatles on the album, that's rare! Rare they allow it. August 29, 20168 yr Author How (and why) do you choose to chart old songs in your chart PCF? I think I would struggle to order them against new tracks. Hi Dandy, thanks for dropping by B-) My chart rules for oldies have got more relaxed in the last few years - if they make the sales or itunes chart, they are eligible, album tracks that have never charted before (and there are still loads of 60's classics uncharted) are eligible if they make the album chart (that's how Dusty is in there) and any track pushed in a movie or advert is more or less a new push (Herb Alpert, Bread) and is OK. On top of that, any obscure oldie that is new to me (so it's fresh and easy to rate against other new fresh tracks) is allowable. You're right about familiar oldies being difficult to rate, cos they ebb and flow in my affections, but I tend to make a value judgement on whether I under-rated them first time round and rate them properly now, or whether they have had their fill (minor hit or not chart at all). Loads of itunes oldies are regular sellers and I don't tend to chart them as they've had long chart runs already (which is why Dusty's Son Of A Preacher Man isn't in my chart - had 2 runs already even though it's in the top 100 sales chart). cheers! john
