Andrew's Review A shocking 8 month wait for the release of Now That's What I Call Music 5 or Now 5 should have meant a great line up of selected artists and some smashing #1's... However, this was not the case.

Unlike Now 4, Now 5 was sadly not released on CD for reasons unknown, and reverted back to a 30 piece tracklist.

The chosen tracks on Now 5 are nothing much to be favoured as many have no significance in the music industry today. Common 80's artists such as Duran Duran, Phil Collins, U2 and David Bowie all made it, and we were also introduced to Simply Red & Jimmy Nail who would both go on to have future hits in the Now series.

Sadly, again, only one #1 was in the final tracklisting, and this came from Sister Sledge. Yet, in the 8 month gap from the release of Now 4, we saw another 12 UK #1's such as Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love; Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is; Paul Hardcastle - 19 & Eurythmics - There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart) to name just 4 of the 12. So questions are raised as to why this was the case. :o

For other artists such as Kool & The Gang, Harold Faltermeyer, Stephen 'Tin Tin' Duffy, Conway Brothers, Katrina & The Waves, Power Station, Steve Arrington, The Commentators and The Damned, this is all we would ever see from them in the entire series.

Though despite all of this, it must surely have had some appeal to collectors as it was able to do something Now 4 couldn't, and that is reach #1 in the UK Albums Chart, and it did this for 5 consecutive weeks.

Cover concept is similar to that of Now 3 & Now 4, but this time our mascot has himself some new shades and a multicolour jacket.

Overall, a very poor episode to the Now series, and most definately could have been much better. Not sure if anybody has noticed, but this compilation seems to be mostly dominated by male artists and groups. The only female artists and groups included are Sister Sledge, Mai Tai, Jaki Graham and Katrina & The Waves - That's just 4 of 30!

 

Artwork Rating: 6/10 Good

Bright and colourful, and a step away from the artists photos. It's very aesthetically pleasing to me. Good job.

 

Side 1 Favourite: Harold Faltermeyer – Axel F

This song was heavily sampled by Crazy Frog in the 00's and that almost killed it, but it survived, and it's still up there as one of the most creative 80's dance productions.

 

Side 2 Favourite: Power Station – Get It On

This was a close call for me as I almost voted for Simple Minds, but this one just pipped it. Power Station was a supergroup of many notable artists, and their cover of this T.Rex anthem is an enjoyable listen all these years later.

 

Side 3 Favourite: Simply Red – Money's Too Tight (To Mention)

The best of a poor bunch of songs, not much positives to mention for this side, just sheer dissatisfaction.

 

Side 4 Favourite: Katrina And The Waves – Walking On Sunshine

It had to be really, just pure 80's cheesy pop. Upbeat and fun to listen to. One of of the most noteworthy 80's girl band songs.

 

Overall Rating: 2/10 Awful

I really mean that, it's one of the poorest offerings in the whole series, and it is in fact a step backwards from the previous release by offering 2 songs less, the same number of #1 singles, being only one, and a lack of release on CD. Just a horrible mess.

I quite like this! Very snazzy, the pig makes me laugh & a fan of the bright colours, that would sure stand out on the Tesco counter. 7/10.

 

Side 1 Favourite:

Axel F - bit of a tune this. Actually prefer the Clock version I'd say (and let's not even mention the 2005 incarnation here).

 

Side 2 Favourite:

One More Night - I don't recall this too well but love me a bit of Phil Collins.

 

Side 3 Favourite:

Frankie - Don't know a single one of these but I like another Sister Sledge song so I'll prob like this one.

 

Side 4 Favourite:

Walking On Sunshine - no contest here, such a happy joyous number.

 

Overall Rating:

Will have to excuse me ignorance for the most part on this one for the low(ish) score, 4/10.

Yeah my bad I only noticed this last night but wanted a bit more free time to do a (brief) review so we got there in the end!

Artwork - 7/10 - I like the bright colours and the pig too

Side 1 - Kool And The Gang - Cherish (I am a fan of theirs so will most likely like this)

Side 2 - Simple Minds Dont You (Forget About Me) Had to be :heart:

Side 3 - Sister Sledge - Frankie Great song :heart:

Side 4 - Katrina and The Waves - Very easy I always listen to this nowaways like Simple Minds :heart:

Overall rating- 6/10 Only truly know like 4-5 songs

 

Artwork rating: 8/10 - I'm pleased that the slanted artist images have now gone. The mixture of the pig and bright colours make for a very fun and bold cover!

 

Side 1 Favourite: Harold Faltermeyer – Axel F - It was between this and Duran Duran but ultimately this one just edged it. I love electronic instrumentals and this is a fine example of a classic one of those. I'm a sucker for synths really. To be honest I'm even a fan of the Crazy Frog reworking! But this original is of course the best.

 

Side 2 Favourite: Simple Minds – Don't You (Forget About Me) - This choice was easy, what a classic! I know it's quite iconic for being associated with The Breakfast Club but I've actually never seen it before. I just know it as a strong standalone song. The build-up to the sing along 'la-la-la-las' that the song concludes with is truly marvellous.

 

Side 3 Favourite: Sister Sledge - Frankie - This was easily the poorest side of Now 5. I went for 'Frankie' as it's the most memorable of the bunch but even then I'm not CRAZY about this song. It's quite cute I guess. Though no 'We Are Family'.

 

Side 4 Favourite: Katrina And The Waves – Walking On Sunshine - This has got to be one of the most feel-good songs ever! This never fails to put a smile on my face and is as bright and bold as the cover of this edition.

 

Overall Rating: 5/10 - There are a handful of gems in an otherwise very average edition. The fact that I was struggling to even pick a favourite for side 3 highlights how much filler there was here.

Another that my parents bought.

 

I love the artwork for this one featuring all the artists 'logos'. Probably the best cover yet! I think I voted 7.

 

Side 1 has the amazing Axel F, but then it also has the best ever James Bond theme, so I had to go for that.

Side 2 can only be another movie classic - Don't You (Forget About Me)

For Side 3, I absolutely love Frankie. It's one of the great 80s number ones for me.

Again no contest for side 4, Walking on Sunshine is a belter!

 

Although record 2 is undoubtedly weaker there are many great tunes on here. I love the eighties so I rated it 9 again.
