My parents owned this on vinyl (which I have now inherited from them) and they played it at my christening so I'm slightly biased in my love of this volume. Some great songs on here!

Artwork rating - 1/10 this and the last one are by far the worst now artworks they loook so half arsed and boring imo :(

Disc 1 favourite: M/A/R/R/S – Pump Up The Volume was hard as the same disc has Heart - Alone and Whitesnake - Here I Go Again on it but this song is a surefire jam :heart:

Disc 2 Favorite: Kirsty MacColl – Fairytale Of New York - By far my favourite christmas track so for me it was no brainer :heart:

Overall Rating - 7/10 besides from the awful artwork the album tracklist is pretty good :wub:

Ah so this was the edition they moved to the Now conventional 2-Disc format?

Quite like that actually. I know it's "fairly" bland like the last edition but the dark blue works so much better & gives it an outer space appearance. 6/10.

 

Disc 1 Fave:

Pump Up The Volume - really fab track miles ahead of its time, does not sound like an 80s song at all! Actually just noticed Whitesnake on it so could be that, tough to call.

 

Disc 2 Fave:

Fairytale Of New York - well it could only be, timeless classic.

 

Overall Rating:

Not a great set of tracks in truth but I'm feeling a lil' generous so I'll bump it up to a 5/10.

Andrew's ReviewNow That's What I Call Music! 10 aka Now 10 has 3 UK #1's and was the first volume to be released on double compact disc. Now 10 achieved #1 status on the UK Albums Chart for 6 weeks.

The selection of artists for Now 10 includes Pet Shop Boys, T'Pau, Bananarama, Cliff Richard, Whitesnake and Jan Hammer to name a few.

Now 10 introduced us to artists like Hue & Cry, Jellybean, Johnny Hates Jazz, T'Pau, Heart, Whitesnake, Wet Wet Wet and Fat Boys.

Now 10 was the only time in the series for M/A/R/R/S, Kiss, The Alarm, Los Lobos, Karel Fialka, Nina Simone, ABC, Squeeze and Pogues.

The Now 10 cover is best described as an evening sky background with the original Now logo lit up. Certainly very original and recognizable.

My personal review of Now 10 is a good one, and I am pleased we saw many new artists appear in the series for the first time, as well as the one hit wonders that were included. It was a great time to start the double CD format which would go on to continue to the present day. All 30 songs are Top 20 hits with the exception of Marillion – Sugar Mice which peaked at #22.

 

Artwork Rating: 7/10 Very Good

What appears to many to be another plan image of the logo on a dark blue background actually appears to me to be a neon lit sign on the side of a road at dusk perhaps. It looks very bright, bold and appealing to look at.

 

Disc 1 Favourite: Whitesnake – Here I Go Again

There's some massive rock songs on this disc, and it can be hard to pick a favourite from the fine selection, but I've chosen Whitesnake for it's electric guitar riffs and a well written rock ballad. A close second place would be the one hit wonder from M/A/R/R/S which was way ahead of it's time.

 

Disc 2 Favourite: Jan Hammer – Crockett's Theme

A touch of class. A beautiful laid back electronic beat, one of the finest chillout songs of all time, and certainly the best from that era.

 

Overall Rating: 7/10 Very Good

I really enjoyed listening to this volume, and there are lots of gems to be found and despite the usual number of tracks (30) and only 3 UK #1 singles, it seems like they stepped it up in a lot of ways, and it's very pleasing to see the introduction of the 2 Disc compilation from this volume onwards.

Picked Never Can Say Goodbye as my fave from disc 1, great if rather cheesy dance tune! Pump Up The Volume is also a great dance tune from disc 1, much cooler sounding end of the 80s dance scale to Never Can Say Goodbye though! :lol:

 

I love Labour Of Love by Hue and Cry too on disc 1, and is my close second for disc 1 after Never Can Say Goodbye and ahead of Pump Up The Volume. Amazing alternative pop tune, at a time in the summer of 1987 when there was too much cheesy pop and power ballads in the charts imo. Pity none of Hue and Cry's following singles were anywhere near as good as it imo.

 

I like Alone, Here we Go Again and Rent from disc 1 too.

 

For disc 2, went with Fairytale Of New York, Crockett's Theme, the ahead of its time sounding chilled electronic track (almost tropical house sounding as danG said on the early dance songs thread) the is my second place on it and Erasure's Circus, while it is not one of Erasure's best songs imo, is my third place on disc 2.
