Andrew's ReviewNow That's What I Call Music! XIII is the second volume to be titled using roman numerals (second only to Now II). Elsewhere in the booklet it is reffered to as Now 13.

Now 13 was the third and final release from 1988, and also the last ever #1 compilation on the UK Albums Chart, peaking at #1 for 4 weeks. From January 1989, a seperate chart was created now known as the UK Compilations Chart.

Another 32 piece tracklisting featuring 3 UK #1s (missing out U2 – Desire, Whitney Housten – One Moment In Time, Enya – Oronico Flow & Robin Beck – First Time).

The artist selection includes Womack & Womack, Erasure, Bobby McFerrin, Hollies, and The Proclaimers amoung others.

Now 13 introduced us to Christians and The Proclaimers and we also got to hear the debuts from Brother Beyond, Inner City, Milli Vanilli and Transvision Vamp.

For some artists though, this would be all we would hear from them in the main series, and those artists were Breathe, Bobby McFerrin, Hollies, Wee Papa Girl Rappers, Yello, Jane Wiedlin and All About Eve.

The Now 13 cover seems to be themed to outer space, depicting a cluster of stars for the background, maybe even an entire galaxy, with the Now logo shaped as some kind of spaceship and rings around the "NOW" circles to suggest planets.

My personal review of Now 13 is neither good, nor bad. I'm so pleased to be able to have access to such songs as Bobby McFerrin – Don't Worry Be Happy which is a favourite from my childhood and also Art Of Noise feat. Tom Jones – Kiss is another good one from the album. Although the addition of Hollies – He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother was a re-release from 1969, it is certainly a pleasant listen nearly 40 years later. Dissapointingly, whats left of CD2 is not as good a listen as the rest of the album (apart from The Proclaimers), and this was quite common with the earlier volumes. The cover concept this time is good in my opinion, but I think they could have done alot more to make it stand out, and I've no idea why all of a sudden they decided to use roman numerals!

Artwork Rating: 6/10 Good

The galactic style theme of this volume is something different at the time, and stood out from the other somewhat bland cover designs from the time.

Disc 1 Favourite: Bobby McFerrin – Don't Worry Be Happy

A timeless childhood favourite which mum used to play me whenever I was having a bad day! It always made me feel better. :)

Disc 2 Favourite: The Proclaimers – I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)

A very well known song by Scottish band The Proclaimers. An enjoyable listen all these years later, and still very well known.

Overall Rating: 6/10 Good

Could be better, with some major missing #1 singles, but it is not a poor volume, and there are still a number of recognisable songs still that get some radio airplay today on occasions.

I'll do this one & 14 together!

This edition is one of only 2 in the whole series to feature roman numerals as opposed to a number (along with II).

Artwork Rating:

Pretty good, I like the outer space-like theme & the NOW logo appears like a spaceship travelling through. Very good for its time! 7/10.

Disc 1 Favourite:

Yazz - LOVE this track  so feelgood & joyous, always brings a lot of energy into the room whenever I hear it, essential 80s anthem.

Disc 2 Favourite:

Proclaimers - such a fantastic singalong anthem, so glad it got brought back into the limelight through Comic Relief even if it was an inferior version, this one is top notch!

Overall Rating:

I only really love the 2 tracks mentioned above, hence another 4/10 from me.

Disc 1 Fave: Erasure - A Little Respect - Just a fantastic pop song!

I also like Yazz - The Only Way is Up. I didn't know until recently it was acid house, the difference that makes it acid house rather than Hi-NRG like the likes of The Communards' version of Never Can Say Goodbye is that house type bassline!

Disc 2 fave: Yello - The Race - this is a fun and very different song for the time! I particularly like the buildups in it!
