It's not really doing it on iTunes in the US or here and I'm really confused why... thought it would skyrocket to #1 even if for just a short while. She has promo coming up with Grammys so it should do it then but I thought from name alone without that it would've made a bigger first day impact.

I'm confused by this too. Also despite one of the biggest Spotify deals ever, debuting at #10 in the US and #14 here is quite surprising. I think Rise stole some of the 'brand new Katy' buzz. Hopefully she drops the video straight after the Grammys, becuase that'll only effect her in the US.

Omg #psychicbeaver as that is so close to my chart predix for it!!

Not a good song andblike with PI the general public justvusn't hur for it, that's all, Rise or no Rise.

I think someone said it before (think it was Tinasha) but she hasn't got a big fan base as such because she's just someone everyone likes. The average person probably won't know Katy has a single out at the moment. It will probably stay steady this week then rise when the GP get hold of it.

Please give it a rest, you've made your point that you dislike it, no need to repeat it ad infinitum.

But Roar did like 180k in its first week :')

Katy has fans, but this song is something different for her (aka its not some big pop banger with a big chorus) as her first single. Add the fact that PRISM was a slight disappointment and Rise was a messy flop and this is what you get

The song will be fine eventually, it's just gonna need some time

I think we also have to realise her last lead single was 3 and a half years ago.

In pop, the gap between 2013 and 2017 is a very long time. Her star started to wane with the release of 'Prism' failing to make hit after hit like her previous album did. Then 'Rise' came out, took some of the Katy comeback hype, got an average reception and didn't set the charts a-light. Although 'Chained To The Rhythm' is good, it also doesn't have that 'wow' immediate factor that was expected; although it is pop, I would still argue that it is a little more low key that some of Katy's biggest hits and that probably is adding to the situation.

I did expect her to do better but at the same time, I don't think it is that surprising. I'm pretty sure it will manage to make the top 3 (or maybe top 5) officially when the video is released. I'm expecting around 7-9 this week.

Totally agree with Davidson. Am I going to lie and say it's not disappointing she hasn't even come close to cracking the top two in the UK and US? Absolutely not. But looking back, so many of us were commenting that we feared her star had waned and she'd left it too long and I think we were right to feel that. Davidson's right, 4 years is a long time in pop and Rise had already sapped some hype away from her. This is a slight initial underperformance but the fact this has had one of the best public reactions I've ever seen a Katy song get online from forums that are usually against her assures this me this will hang around nicely even if it just results in a top 5 peak.

I really appreciate the message of the song and I really like the verses. The lyrics in the chorus are just weak, just using the same 'turn it up', 'dance', 'drink' lyrics. I get the message is still there in the chorus but I don't think it's a successful way of doing it.

I think, overall, it's a good effort. It's not WOW this is amazing but it's not bad either. Maybe 7 or 8/10. Rise is better and is too underrated. :(

kudos to him tho that he doesn't care about looking like a fool in public

Well iTunes aside, it's had the 6th highest radio debut of all time in the US.

#1 We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (44.164)

#2 Suit & Tie (39.454)

#3 Can't Stop The Feeling (33.191)

#4 #Beautiful (32.528) [yes, the Mariah song....]

#5 Work (28.356)

#6 Chained To The Rhythm (28.085)

And her Spotify debut is great for a female artist (10th global)

For context, first day US debuts:

Good For You - #15 341,507

On My Mind - #52 206,627

Focus - #13 493,418

Dangerous Woman - #20 469,813

Make Me - #96 205,617

Perfect Illusion - #26 500,663

Chained To The Rhythm - #10 759,481

The Mariah song there puts it all into perspective for opening radio numbers.

I like it.

Okay.

I love it now finally. Been meh on it since it's release but finally really grown. JAMMIN'

Definitely a slow burner and I can see this having longevity, which is what's most important nowadays! It's very rare to get an instant big hit nowadays. Davidson has it spot on for the most part though.
It'll fall throughout the weekend but from Monday it'll start picking up good momentum. It's not going to be difficult for it to catch on when it's already A list on Radio 1 and on the highest rotation on Capital. And in America she has the Grammys on Sunday.

Hopefully The Grammy's can have some sort of effect here too!
