Over the next few days I'll be counting down the Top 200 most successful songs of 2016. The order of the songs has been determined via a points system, which has been applied to my weekly personal charts from 8th January 2016 to 30th December 2016. A week at #1 = 100 points, #2 = 75 points, #3 = 50 points, #4 = 40 points, #5 = 36 points, and then from #6 to #40 it goes down from 35 points to 1 point. For example, a chart run of 01-02-05-10-20-30-40-out would come to a total of 275 points. I've decided that this EOY chart will only include songs that entered my personal charts within the past two years (from January 2015 to December 2016), relegating older hits to a new feature: "Retro Top 10" (see the post below this one). Calvin Harris - We Found Love [#01 - 1706 points - 2011] Predictably a few Christmas songs feature here, the highest of which is Mariah Carey's classic 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'. Since 2005 (the birth of my personal chart), the festive number has racked up 60 weeks. In 2016 it reached #2 in Christmas week, and the 199 points it achieved in 5 charting weeks would have been enough to see it as high as #80 in my EOY 2016, had I decided to continue the inclusion of old songs! Calum Scott's cover version of 'Dancing On My Own' caused Robyn's original to re-enter my chart at #15, and increase its chart weeks from 11 to 19. The 101 points it achieved in 2016 boosted its lifetime total to 402 points, earning the song a long overdue gold certification. :D For the record, Robyn's original >>>>> Calum's cover. Even though I "quite like" his take on the song (it peaked at #11), I adore Robyn's version. It saddens me that she didn't achieve more success with it in the UK. :snif: Britney Spears' appearance at the Billboard Music Awards & her Apple Festival set prompted a few of the songs from her back catalogue to re-enter my chart in May & September of 2016. 'Work Bitch' received the biggest boost on both occasions, re-entering at #17 thanks to Billboard, and then at #15 due to Apple Festival. I went to see Mariah Carey in concert in March 2016, so I felt the need to re-enter a few of her singles! 'Obsessed' even gained a new peak of #9, bettering its original #15 peak from 2009. 'We Belong Together' is the most successful song in my chart's history - it's one of only three songs to score more than 2000 points!

Dua Lipa - No Lie I chose Keke Palmer's 'I Don't Belong To You' as my January 2016 entry for BJSC, but it proved to be an ill-fated choice when it failed to make it to the finals! It's a nice & laidback r'n'b jam, but I can understand why it didn't connect - I don't think it's a song that grabs you on first listen. Oh well! You may know Keke better as Zayday Williams in American comedy horror television series Scream Queens! 'Black Magic' was a huge #1 hit in 2015 for Little Mix, spending 4 weeks at the top and placing 2nd in my 2015 End of Year chart (behind Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Run Away With Me'). In 2016 its highest position was #19, achieved in the week the girls did a sensational performance of the song at the Brit Awards! This helped the song exceed 1000 points, therefore becoming their first Diamond certified hit. To date it's their biggest hit in my chart, but their recent smashes 'Shout Out To My Ex' & 'Touch' could both go on to achieve a higher points total in 2017! Find out later where those two singles place. Janet Jackson made a triumphant comeback in late 2015 with her eleventh studio album 'Unbreakable', which was received positively by the critics & scored her a #1 album in the US. It was also one of my personal favourites of the year! :heart: Sadly she slept on the album's biggest bop ('BURNITUP!') and didn't give it the single treatment, instead opting for the sensual 'No Sleeep' as lead single (#12 peak in my chart, June 2015), and the 90s R'n'B throwback 'Unbreakable' as a follow up (#22, October 2015). The third and final single from the album was the very funky 'Dammn Baby', released in May 2016 simultaneously with the premiere of its music video. It provided Janet with her first Top 10 of the era (#10), but could only achieve a very short chart stay of 10-23-out. I'd pretty much burned the song out months earlier when the album was released, so it failed to stick around when surrounded by fresher songs, despite the high entry. Sadly Janet cancelled the majority of her 2016 tour (Bal & I had tickets :snif: ) but I only say sadly in terms of the fact it was a missed opportunity to see an icon. Her reason for cancellation proved to be a lovely one, as she had decided to start a family. Tkay Maidza - Do It Right 'New Romantics' by Taylor Swift was perhaps one single too far from her huge '1989' album, becoming the first single of the era to miss my Top 3 by peaking at #15. I played this song loads when the album came out, so by the time it received the single treatment in April, I was pretty over it. The uninspired "concert footage" music video didn't help matters! This write-up sounds rather negative, I should stress I think it's a great song! :heehee: Natalie La Rose placed third in my EOY 2015 with her huge & long-running debut single 'Somebody', however I don't think her collaboration with Tiësto & Oliver Heldens was quite the right song ( :basil: ) for her. It was nice enough, but I got tired of it quickly. I'm here for more R&B flavoured bops please, Natalie! 'Sledgehammer' duly became Rihanna's 46th Top 10 hit(!) when it entered at #9 back in July. However it has the dubious honour of being her smallest Top 10 hit to date, with just 4 weeks inside the Top 40! I think most of us would agree that it's far away from being Rihanna at her best, and not one of Sia's finest moments as a writer. The song served as the soundtrack single to the movie Star Trek Beyond. Miguel has topped my charts three times, with his Mariah Carey collaboration '#Beautiful' & the solo hits 'Adorn' and 'Coffee'. 'waves' is his next biggest hit, peaking at #7 and earning itself a silver certification in 2016. 'waves' and the aforementioned 'Coffee' are taken from Miguel's third album 'Wildheart', which was critically acclaimed - and deservedly so! It's one of the finest R'n'B albums of the decade, and 'waves' is definitely one of the highlight tracks. Rachel Platten's 'Stand By You' achieved most of its success back in 2015, but re-entered my chart in early 2016 due to the release of her album 'Wildfire'. It wasn't my top choice to be the second single from the 'Red Flag' album - ultimately I think I'd rather it had been left as a "strong album track", with them choosing 'One Woman Man' instead (which eventually materialised as the third single). Nevertheless 'This Is A War' reached a peak of #10 in my chart, off the back of its dramatic Games of Thrones-esque music video. I appreciate the strong & defiant message of the song; in the words of member Nicole Appleton: "The song is about being able to love whoever you want. Being able to marry who you want to marry and to be able to choose your own destiny regardless of what people say or think. It’s very cinematic and really emotional." Australian singer Dami Im appears twice in this section! The stirring ballad 'Sound of Silence' was my favourite Eurovision song of 2016 - it should have won! :( Her of it during the final was stunning, she did herself proud. :wub: 'Fighting For Love' is a dance-pop bop, but it sadly only managed a peak of #64 in Australia, making it one of her least successful singles to date... but perhaps she could take solace in the fact that it made my Top 10? :kink: Dami revealed that this song was partly inspired by her own struggles to fit in after immigrating to Australia from South Korea at the age of nine. I don't believe that 'Boy Problems' was the right choice of single from Carly Rae Jepsen's glorious 'E•MO•TION' album. Sure, it's a fun & catchy listen, but it's also kind of... frivolous, whereas the majority of the rest of the album is really quite the opposite of that. Sadly the public completely slept on the album, as well as two of its finest songs ('Run Away With Me' & 'Your Type'), so I actually did understand the logic of her choosing 'Boy Problems' as an attempt to remind everyone that she was the artist behind the delightfully cheerful smashes 'Call Me Maybe' and 'I Really Like You'. Ultimately it didn't work for her, as 'Boy Problems' continued the theme of the era by receiving very little attention. Instead of her taking the seemingly safe route, I wish she'd continued to push forward with showcasing her new-found artistry. Songs such as 'When I Needed You', 'Let's Get Lost', 'Warm Blood', 'Gimmie Love' & 'All That' would have achieved that in my opinion - all thought-provoking songs that tap into your emotions. Probably a long-shot, but maybe one of these would have made people sit up and pay attention? Sigh! I can only hope that she continues to put out quality records, even if she continues to be a best-kept-secret type of artist. Anyway, to end this write-up with some positives about 'Boy Problems': it does contain a rather brilliant lyric "I think I broke up with my boyfriend today - and I don't really care!", and it received a well-suited and enjoyable visual (in fact I'd say it's one of 2016's best videos). I discovered American singer Gallant's 'Bourbon' via the Radio 1 playlist (which isn't actually something I check out often, so I could have easily overlooked this gem!). It's a soulful R'n'B song with gorgeous/delicate vocals & cathartic lyrics, with a production value that harks back to R'n'B from the 80s/90s. Her previous worst performing single was 'This Is How We Do', a #6 hit with 174 points. Katy's only missed my Top 10 twice, with 'Thinking of You' and 'The One That Got Away' both peaking at #11 - but despite this, both certified silver, with 249 & 209 points respectively. Sadly with 'Rise', despite an initially good first impression of it, I grew tired of it pretty fast (as can be seen from its chart run). I hope she has far better songs up her sleeve for her eventual comeback! Kelly Clarkson's 'Piece By Piece' originally charted in its single remix form in late 2015 (peaking at #4). It returned to my chart in 2016 off the back of an emotionally charged stripped-back version performed on American Idol (linked above :heart: ) and once again reached a high of #4! I hadn't been anticipating Louis Tomlinson's solo career whatsoever and went into my first listen of 'Just Hold On' with trepidation, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised by it! So much so that it entered straight in at #2 in my chart, equalling the performance of his former bandmate Zayn (with 'Pillowtalk'). Both of them completely eclipsed Niall, whose first solo offering 'This Town' bombed at #39.
