Usually, if i mention Steps Tragedy is the song people always name. Its most certainly their signature song. That said, not everyone says Tragedy, on occasion people mention One For Sorrow or 5,,6,7,8.

Better Best Forgotten, Stomp and Darker Shade Of Blue are on my own standouts but its fair for me to say i like 90% of their singles.

It's pretty level between '5 6 7 8' and 'Tragedy' as to what they're signature hit is. I can't say one is more popular or culturally relevant than the other.

In public consciousness it probably goes:

5,6,7,8/Tragedy

One For Sorrow

Deeper Shade of Blue

It's the Way You Make Me Feel

Stomp

I'd say 'Tragedy' just edges it over '5 6 7 8'.

I'd say 'Chain Reaction' should be up there too. It may also be known as a Diana Ross song but I'd say a lot of people who know the song know that Steps covered it too.

I don't think 'Stomp' is very memorable

I would say 'Heartbeat' is more we'll know than a few of those tracks above. Plus, The Weeknd sampled it on 'Secrets'.

Is that actually true though? I only ask because I can't seem to find anything to substantiate that.

No I was joking, but it really does sound like it samples 'Heartbeat' to me. :D

I think Heartbeat would be in the top five there, if only by way of association with Tragedy. In November/December 1998 I'm sure both sides of the double-a were getting equal attention, and then obviously Tragedy was everywhere at new year and took on a life of its own. Had Tragedy not been part of the release I still think Heartbeat would have been a semi well-remembered No.2 hit over the Xmas 1998 period, just dropped away immediately after that.

I'd say it goes:

1. Tragedy (by a small margin, but the dance routine is so iconic)

2. 5,6,7,8

3. One For Sorrow

4. Deeper Shade Of Blue

5. Heartbeat

With It's The Way You Make Me Feel and Chain Reaction just outside.

See I don't think Heartbeat resonates with the public because Tragedy overtook it. I think Heartbeat is one of those that when it's played on the music channels at Christmas people think "oh yeah that one"

I do think in terms of videos people think of Love's Got A Hold On My Heart too because of the yellow outfits but possibly not the song itself, if that makes sense.

It's a funny case but I think it's one of those songs that's better known than people might think, quite possibly purely by association because people had to play it (or consciously skip it) on the CD single to get to Tragedy. I'm not saying it's really well loved, but I think it's pretty well known and remembered. Which is weird because I don't think it would have been well remembered if it was a standalone single, I just think Tragedy dragged its status up a bit. It always seems surprisingly popular on their tours too, maybe it was a school disco 'slow dance' classic for a generation...not that 1998 was short on those!

I couldn't tell you what 'Heartbeat' sounds like. I can't think of any lyrics or even to hum it, and I'm pretty switched-on to music.

I would say Tragedy and Chain Reaction are both up there as Steps songs that are quite well-known. Stomp, probably not so much; people might know it to hear but they wouldn't know the name.

Is anyone else reminded of this being a category on Pointless? I'm fairly sure I remember it coming up before.

I can never remember the song 'Heartbeat' but I remember the video being played all the time at Christmas, I just never sat through it.

Heartbeat completely passed me by at the time as a ten year old, but 'Tragedy' and 'Better Best Forgotten' I remember hugely - it was the upbeat hits that appealed to me the most as a kid, but then I adored It's The Way You Make Me Feel in my pre-teens!

This I'd say was their most well-known top five:

1. Tragedy

2. 5,6,7,8

3. One for Sorrow

4. Deeper Shade of Blue

5. It's The Way You Make Me Feel

I never understand Deeper Shade Of Blue being a signature hit. I remember it being released and it didn't seem like a huge hit at the time but seems to be remembered.

Agreed that Tragedy and 5,6,7,8 are the two signature tunes.

My personal peak steps love was probably around Stomp/The Way You Make Me Feel time. I remember listening to the chart show the week Stomp charted at #1 and being really excited! (also remember its 1-5 chart drop which at the time was a significant fall from the top spot)

Have managed to get tickets for their reunion tour haha, quite excited!
