May 9, 20178 yr (And despite it being right at the bottom end of my rankings as a song, I think Portugal delivered my favourite *performance* of the night ) That's the thing though - the performance is so endearing that it gives the song an entirely different meaning and feel. Which it really has to being in Portuguese!
May 9, 20178 yr okay, so ALL of my personal preferences has gone (Finland, Georgia, Slovenia...just slightly addicted to Portugal and Armenia, but not in THAT way) so I wonder if I should watch the 2nd semifinal or let it go away from me.
May 9, 20178 yr First half: * Moldova * Azerbaijan * Portugal * Poland * Armenia Second half: * Greece * Australia * Belgium * Cyprus * Sweden
May 9, 20178 yr That's the thing though - the performance is so endearing that it gives the song an entirely different meaning and feel. Which it really has to being in Portuguese! I've been putting it around second from bottom in my rankings, but I cast them a vote tonight. Admittedly there is also an element of rooting for them as a country, an underdog, taking part since 1964 and the poor bast*rds haven't come top 5 once, I'd be very interested to see them host.
May 9, 20178 yr Author Interestingly, Portugal winning the European football championship last year ties in quite nicely with Greece winning Eurovision in Kyiv back in 2005 after winning the football the year before, so if you're a superstitious person, they may be worth a flutter (assuming it is monetarily worth it)
May 9, 20178 yr Interestingly, Portugal winning the European football championship last year ties in quite nicely with Greece winning Eurovision in Kyiv back in 2005 after winning the football the year before, so if you're a superstitious person, they may be worth a flutter (assuming it is monetarily worth it) AND both Greece and Portugal won the Euros in a surprise usurping of the much favored home team. It's probably worth a little flutter at least.
May 10, 20178 yr Australia and Poland I didn't like at all. I hope Belgium can make improvements as I like it a lot,Montenegro I loved the chorus and backing track but that guy couldn't sing. Finland I thought were a cert to go through but had doubts on iceland. I'd love Portugal to be the surprise winner in the final.
May 10, 20178 yr Lyric of the Portuguese song: "If one day someone asks about me Tell them I lived to love you Before you, I only existed Tired and with nothing to give My dear, listen to my prayers I beg you to return, to want me again I know that one can’t love alone Maybe slowly, you might learn again My dear, listen to my prayers I beg you to return, to want me again I know that one can’t love alone Maybe slowly, you might learn again If your heart doesn’t wish to give in Not to feel passion, not to suffer Without making plans on what will come after My heart can love for the both of us"
May 10, 20178 yr First half: * Moldova * Azerbaijan * Portugal * Poland * Armenia Second half: * Greece * Australia * Belgium * Cyprus * Sweden Oh dear. Literally all the non-deserving ones are in the second half.
May 10, 20178 yr Very sad for Finland, it's a beautiful song! What a shame. :( Portugal doesn't seem popular here, but I really like their entry so I'm very happy to see them progress to the final. Obviously I didn't understand a word of what Salvador was singing*, yet it resonated with me in how sentimental and sincere he sounded, it was touching. Clearly a few people here are put off by his mannerisms, but I find him endearing! * I've since read the translation though, as posted above.! Finally got around to hearing/seeing Lucie. Powerful vocals and I loved the staging - hopefully we can do reasonably well! 👀
May 10, 20178 yr So disappointed that Finland didn't qualify, I bet it's 11th :/ I do believe the performance wasn't the best there, it was too dark
May 10, 20178 yr Seriously. I understand why most of these songs made it through and I'm ok with that but what the hell happened with Australia and Belgium? How did these two actually qualify if not only because people had made up their minds before the show started?! Belgium was bad but Australia .. Oh man, as one of my pre-show faves I was so disappointed in that performance. Isaiah was obviously incredibly nervous and that vocal performance made me shiver with cringe as he obviously lost all control of his song. It's surprising that it went that way because obviously he can sing but ultimately this did not deserve to qualify over Albania/Iceland/Latvia/even Finland (which I don't like, but vocally it was far superior to both Belgium and Australia). My surprise of the night was by far Armenia. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did, but then again the same thing happened with them last year as it quickly became my favourite after seeing it performed live for the first time. Overall a nice night but a lot of the songs were in the 4.5 - 6.0 rating area. Czechia, Georgia and Slovenia comfortably made up the bottom for me. I did manage to predict 8 out of 10 qualifiers. I had Poland as my 11th place but had Australia written down as a DNQ after that performance. I expected Latvia and Iceland to qualify instead. :(
May 10, 20178 yr Australia is horrendous, but they still have the honeymoon with ESC, it'll bomb in the final

May 10, 20178 yr Author Yeah Isaiah had a great performance in the jury final so must've picked up enough points to make it through there, I'd be very surprised to see him in the televote top 10 when they release the voting stats after the grand final.
May 10, 20178 yr On holiday and wi-fi issue in the villa. Briefly went into meltdown but had to retrospectively catch up once all fixed. I think Belgium is testament to how far a GREAT and contemporary song can go especially with juries. I thought she vocally held it together and the staging was lovely. Finland were indeed a bit of a shocker not going through (but not really overly bothered about it, it's just overblown smoke and mirrors IMO). Latvia was my disappointment even though the staging?performane was a bit iffy. Montenegro was the worst. I don't actually particularly mind it, but Slavko looked like he couldn't be arsed and I got bored quite quickly (Moldova did what Montenegro should be done - cheesy but also slick and memorable). I do suspect Australia squeezed in. Apparently his jury perf was on point... Just as well, but I think Oz are potentially heading for the bottom 5 this year. Also Portugal and Italy in the first half and Sweden, Belgium and UK in the second half is doing wonders for me (Lucie is bloody brilliant!). Edited May 10, 20178 yr by ScottyEm
May 10, 20178 yr I dont see the appeal of Latvia, i was happy it did not qualify. Australia, look certain to end up with a low placing in the final, i was surprised it qualified last night. Belgium,as a songs its great, it builds very well, the problem is the singer is lacking confidence and looked scared on the stage but that can have appeal too. She looked so happy and relieved to have qualified when the results were announced, i really want them to do well in the final. Lucie's staging looks excellent, probably our best yet. I am not expecting a big result for her so i will settle for a top 20 finish now.
May 10, 20178 yr This really is our best staging in YEARS lJ6K-EvqccA And Molly - Children Of The Universe is the 2nd best ❤
