Andrew's ReviewNow That's What I Call Music! 43 also known as Now 43 featured 41 summer hits of 1999 and included 8 UK #1 singles. For many artists, this was the platform on which they started their continued chart success and subsequent features in the series. These newbies were Martine McCutcheon, S Club 7, ATB, Basement Jaxx, Geri Halliwell, Lolly, Precious, Beverley Knight, Fierce, Chicane and Alice Deejay.

Just a couple of missing #1's from this era, one of them was the debut single by Westlife – Swear It Again who would go on to achieve a further 13 UK #1 singles in their career. The other missing #1 was from Ricky Martin, who had previously featured in the series, but his best selling hit Livin La Vida Loca, which stayed at #1 for 3 weeks, was not included on this volume. Also missing from this volume were hits like Steps – Love's Got A Hold On My Heart, Britney Spears – Sometimes, TLC – No Scrubs, Jennifer Lopez – If You Had My Love, A1 – Be The First To Believe along with the debut from controversial newcomer Eminem – My Name Is.

The artists whose only appearance was on this volume were Shanks & Bigfoot, Phats & Small, Adam Rickitt, Baz Luhrmann, New Radicals, The Wiseguys, Gomez, Semisonic, Yomanda, DJ Jurgen and Masters At Work.

Artwork Rating: 7/10 Very Good

Striking artwork on this volume, with a very sunshine filled theme. The logo radiates in front of a sphere like object which I calling the sun! Very bright and inviting. The silky smooth blue around the edges, and on the reverse of the cover, makes for a very good piece of artwork.

Disc 1 Favourite: S Club 7 – Bring It All Back

This is such a fun song to listen to, and I'm not ashamed in the least you like it. The message in the lyrics are positive and uplifting, and the upbeat sound and summer freshness make this a great S Club song. The first of many to come.

Disc 2 Favourite: Bryan Adams – Cloud Number 9

One of my favourite songs growing up, I absolutely loved the vibes this song was giving off, and it wasn't until later in life I discovered it was produced by Chicane, who worked with Bryan Adams again the following year. This is my favourite Bryan Adams song and it is a feel good anthem for me.

Disc 3 Tracklist:

(A new concept of what a third disc might look like if other hits from the era were used)

3. A1 – Be The First To Believe 3:19 {6}

4. *Nsync – Tearin' Up My Heart 3:31 {9}

5. Steps – Loves Got A Hold On My Heart 3:22 {2}

6. Britney Spears – Sometimes 3:55 {3}

7. Cher – Strong Enough 3:29 {5}

8. Powerhouse feat. Duane Harden – What You Need 3:20 {13}

cover art: 6/10

disc one: ATB - 9PM (Till I Come) :heart:

disc two: DJ Jurgen & Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone :heart:

overall 6/10 - some v good songs here mixed with a fair bit of unknown/crap as usual

I typed out a long post and my computer failed when posting...

So in a nutshell, just to say that this is my favourite ever compilation probably, I bought it on the day of release mainly for Better Off Alone, which had entered the chart the day before Now 43 was released. It was at the time the only way to get hold of the radio edit of the track as the CD single bizarrely only had long dance mixes, which made its success even more impressive!. But there are so many other highlights throughout, particularly 9PM (Till I Come), Say It Again, In Our Lifetime and You Get What You Give <3

I agree this is the best summer Now by a long way. I chose S Club 7 from disc 1 - Bring it All Back was such a classic and reminds me of watching Miami 7 for the first time on CBBC that summer and becoming obsessed thereon in! ATB and Backstreet Boys a close second and third for me. Disc 2 choice for me was again, Fatboy Slim - every single he released at this time was a classic. Close second and third would be New Radicals and Blur.

Disc 2 is so much better than Disc 1 for this one. My favourites:

9pm (Till I Come)

Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)

You Get What You Give

Hey Boy Hey Girl

Right Here Right Now

Saltwater

Cloud Number 9

Synth & Strings

I'm interested to know if anyone here actually bought this volume on minidisc? What was the short term appeal at the time? :o

Nope, but I do have a Minidisc player, though the only album I actually bought on that format was Thunderbugs' debut/only album, which was curiously only available on Minidisc :lol:

I think it was a precursor to an MP3 player in some way, a portable device that was much smaller than a Discman and more versatile than a walkman. You could make your own compilations or albums with by recording songs onto blank minidiscs and have features like skipping and fast forwarding through tracks etc, it seemed quite revolutionary prior to people burning their own CDs at home! But would be seen as tedious and fiddly now.

It was also a good format to record your own music onto from a computer or keyboard input, I have a whole album of songs I made back in 2003 on Minidisc.

I have the Thunderbugs album on CD (imported from the Netherlands, mind) :D

I'm surprised that Minidisc never took off, but I guess with Napster rearing its then illegal head a year on from this Now it was a doomed format. One of my friends at school had a player and made his own mixtapes with it though, and I succinctly remember him having Will Smith's "Willennium" album for it.

Also interesting fact: when McFly were in their infancy, Tom used to send Minidiscs of demos to Danny of songs he'd written with James from Busted.

Had no idea it was out on CD, I thought it was folklore that that album only came out on Minidisc!

The cover of "Angel of the Morning" on it is really quite lovely. Up there with the Chrissie Hynde version!
