Cable may a little old - is he not in his mid 70s?

Only as old as you feel and all that though I guess!

This is a big thing tho in the LibDems. My former MP Mighty Ming stood down as leader because of ageism.

There's a fair bit in local press about a sour grapes Tory councillor here wanting to ban students from voting in their uni constituency :drama: Typical Tory, dangerous totalitarian mindset. You can't just ban everyone who didn't vote for you, what next "you have to have had a job here for 20 years to vote" to maximise your chances of being old enough to likely vote Conservative?!

Presumably the councillor in question claims he only want to eliminate the possibility of double-voting?

Ironically, from the data published by YouGov it looks like people who were in employment were more likely to vote Labour. (the Tory vote was kept afloat by the retired, obviously)

Nope lmao it just came across like he was just sour that students made Labour win, but in our constituency the incumbent Tory was also being investigated for expenses fraud which probably harmed his chances as well with everyone, not just students, and the Labour MP was much more visible on campaigning, so it comes across as deliberately sour that you just blame the students for your party not winning. If the Tories had won this constiuency, I'd not be happy with it but I'd never call for retirees for example to not get a vote just because they won't vote for my party. People can and should use their vote in whatever way they see fit.

It was indeed.

On the students point - I was a student for four years and I never came across anyone who was planning on voting in two constituencies. Denying students the option of voting in whichever seat they feel more "at home" in would be a completely retrograde step, regardless of the fact he's just obviously bitter.

If that is the case, perhaps he could provide evidence that it is a problem.

If there was suspicions then they could compare the lists for both constituencies and remove your vote. It's not as if it's really a secret ballot. They could track your vote down if you'd committed vote fraud to discount it
Bloody students insisting on voting where they live for most of the year! What is the world coming to!? Bring back limited voting for property-owning rich white males only, eh!?
That's what I meant about the timing of the next election. Vince Cable is 74 so he could be almost 80 at the next election.

Reminds me of Gladstone a bit lol

Voting records cannot be examined without a court order though.

If there is substantiated evidence that people were voting in two constituencies do you not think that a court order would be obtained??? This would be a Police lead enquiry and they would do that. Duh.

You see it in the rare occasion when someone vote under someone else's name.

A court order would only be obtained in the above circumstances if the result was extremely close - if the winning margin was 10k, then obviously a few double-votes would have no affect on the overall result, and the checking process would cost many times more than the fine for voting twice.

In any case, that wouldn't be needed - your name gets ticked on the register when you've voted. and therefore it would be easy to check if it was ticked in more than one place.

Absolutely!

Vidcapper, there is no problem here. Students are not voting twice. Drop it.

It wasn't I that raised the issue in the first place! Besides, it's not *whether* they have, but the fact that they have the *means* to that is the issue.

I have to wonder why you are so *incredibly defensive* where matters relating to voting, especially Labour voting, are concerned?

One thing you can be sure of though, I won't drop a matter just because I am told to - only when I have had some satisfactory answers, or get bored of repetition!

No, as already explained to you, the vote is hardly secret anyone who voted twice would be caught immediately.

Stop looking for excuses regards to why that hideous posh boy party didn't win.

The vote *is* secret, and I never suggested it as a reason why the Tories didn't win. Their woeful campaign was why they didn't win.

This is just a question raised without any evidence. May as well ask if the sky is polka dot.

Now, if you want actual examples of people registered to vote in 2 places who have taken that option, you only have to look at Steve Bannon (who is being invesitgated for it) and Missy trump (who isn't). The Best of the Right-wing elite. Not the UK elite, I grant, but they do mix with them rather a lot - see besties Farage, Tessamay, Bojo.
