The backstage Rock Profile sketches are what made the late 2001 relaunch of TOTP a huge white elephant in the first place. Then the Radio 1 top 40 had all these interview segments before the chart, which made listening figures drop off.

I hope this new show quickly realises the mistakes made in the past and cut the nonsense out, after all, the old Radio 1 format of playing every song in the top 40 actually worked a whole lot more better. Just like TOTP when it was just the songs, chart rundown then the number one.

Not convinced about this just yet, I hope the sketches are actually well done and don't take up most of the show. Less chat and more live music hopefully.

No mention of the chart in the press release.. hope they at least do a top 10 countdown.

'Dotty' being A.Dot or Amplify Dot as she is formerly known, and responsible for this bop!

Got a feeling this is going to be a bit of a disaster, probably a 7:30pm slot after The One Show or after Eastenders, most likely the former.

That would clash with TOTP. I hope they don't do that.

I'm willing it to do well - if for nothing else because it's bad enough that the BBC's one dedicated hour to pop music is Christmas Day TOTP these days - but I have a sinking feeling that the ghost of that show's Tim Kash era i.e. when it turned shit is rattling its chains. I hope sincerely I'm proved wrong.

Well the Beeb have Jools on as well remember!

Which is fine on the odd episode someone I quite like is on it, if a little too niche.

One show that I actually think got the balance dead on and would've been a very worthy successor to TOTP had the Beeb not scrapped the 'BBC Switch' brand of programmes a few years ago was 'Sound' with Annie Mac and Nick Grimshaw. It went out on Saturday mornings/afternoons between 2007 and 2009, and had a good mixture of pop, indie, dance and R&B acts on.

As I said I'm willing this to do well, but I have a sinking feeling that the 'pop' end of things for this show will start and end at Harry bloody Styles.

Just one of the biggest popstars in the world then...

I mean there's absolutely no indicator of what type of artists this show will attract yet, so let's not cast aspersions before we even have an indicator of who the guests are.

Apart from Royal Blood doing the theme, and the word "bands" used in the press release

Just as I feared. I feel a slightly ranty blog post directed at the BBC coming on regarding all of this

How about watching it before you rant?

I'm not personally excited about any of the guests announced - but they do sound like the right sort of mix for a show like this. I'm hoping it's more than 3 performances per show though - perhaps there will be 1 or 2 lesser known acts in there, or a big chart hit by a "X featuring Y" sort of thing. Also hope they run down the top 10.
