Superman threatens Beatfreakz hit

Dance act Beatfreakz have been told to withdraw their current top 10 single because the cover copies the famous "S" logo from Superman's suit.

The Dutch band, which features a 3ft 3in (1m) dancer, is currently at number seven with Superfreak.

But a spokesperson says they have been told to recall the single and remove the Superman logo from their website.

Lawyers for DC Comics and Time Warner, which own the Superman brand, were not immediately available for comment.

The band's record label, Ministry of Sound, also declined to comment.

Beatfreakz were put together by club producers Dennis Christopher and Mark Simmons.

Their records rework classic disco hits such as Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell and Superfreak by Rick James.

The video for their first single was a pastiche of Michael Jackson's Thriller, featuring a dance troupe of oddball characters, including a contortionist and a 7ft 5in (2.26m) 'drummer'.

The dancers quickly became the group's visual trademark, and appear again in the video for the current single, which was the highest new entry in the UK Top 40 this weekend.

Speaking on BBC Radio 1's chart show, the band revealed they were working on a cover version of the Ghostbusters theme tune for their next release.

I'm wondering what's gonna happen to the song in the near future now that there this lawsuit.

Is this just free publicity?

probs i didnt see the s on the cover. however i was in woolies at the time and they do odd fake covers in there

Woolies change the covers when you buy them that's just bizarre - why must they have to ruffle through a drawer for the CD the fools?

I read this and hmmmm if it's true it will be deleted I take it?

Can't be deleted yet. OCC require one (or is it two) weeks notice.

They could recalll the physical or just replace the covers somehow perhaps.

Let's revisit the case of a Shamen single that went through something similar. Taken from James Masterton's Chart Commentary in November 1993:

No. 14: CLIMBER. Shamen - SOS EP

A climb in possibly the most bizarre circumstances of all. All

recent Shamen singles have featured a distinctive design of

cover, all produced by the same design company. This new single

was different, designed by different artists after the contract

with the old designers had expired. The old designers however

saw more than a passing resemblance and promptly took out an

injunction - not on the record but the cover. This led to the

EP being withdrawn from sale at the start of last week which

under normal circumstances would have harmed the sales and thus

the chart position of the track. Now reissued in a plain black

sleeve...

I saw this story in the Metro - if they can get new copies out, the old will sell out and the song will go up the chart!
I looked in HMV this morning and I can't see any S on the cover. Both CD1 and CD2 had silhouettes of the freaks...
Hehe, I'm now so tempted to buy this and flog it on Ebay, will be worth a bit shortly :kink:

if they are so botherd beatfreaks shud take it out and still be the mint artists that they are. and show them hus boss
