I liked it for a sort amount of time when it came out but it’s not what I’d call a top 10 for me

The path you chose to run alone

09. All I Have (Ft LL Cool J) | This Is Me...Then | Avg.8.387

Highest Scores: 11: (StillJupiter), 10: (Jack, classydude, PAJ88, Mack, Simon, Jay), Lowest Scores: 4: (Tawdry Hepburn)

Fairing a hell of a lot better than last time where this was #18, and now jumping up 9 places to #9 is 'All I Have' which was released in December 2002 as the 2nd single from her 3rd album 'This Is Me...Then' and features rapper LL Cool J, making this their first collaboration together and last to feature here. The song samples 'Very Special' by Debra Lewis which can be heard at the start of the song, who later filed a lawsuit against the label for misappropriating her voice in the song and her name in the credits. The song is a R&B & Hip-Hop ballad about moving on from a breakup, and it's a really nice track with really good vocals from both artists especially JLO who sings with such depth and warmth and on the whole, the song does have that really nice Christmassy feel to it. Upon release the song became a massive success by topping the US Billboard charts for 4 weeks and therefore becoming one of the biggest hits of her career as well as giving LL Cool J his first chart topper. To date this would her 4th and final US #1. In the UK it was also successful by reaching #2 becoming the highest charting single from the album. Elsewhere it was also successful by topping the charts in New Zealand and hit top 5 peaks in Australia, Netherlands & Switzerland, as well as top 10 positions in Ireland + Scotland, then top 20 in Italy, Sweden, Belgium & Germany.

'All I Have' is an absolutely horrendous song (pretty sure I scored it lower than 4 as well).

I didn't like 'Dance Again' at the time or for a few years after, but it has kinda grown on me after hearing it on nights out.

08. Jenny From The Block | This Is Me...Then | Avg.8.483

Highest Scores: 10: (Jack, all is vanity, Liam, Addy King, Rossco, HarryEzra, gavindeejay), 9.5/9: (Regina, classydude, Cucumberella, blacksquare, Tombo, Mack, StillJupiter, JosephStyles, Floater, Jay),
Lowest Scores: 4: (PAJ88)

Davidson gets his wish as 'Jenny From The Block' finishes in 8th place, matching it's position from the last rate funnily enough. This actually surprised me as I though the scores would have been a lot more mixed, despite being one of her most polarizing songs of her career, the scores were mostly very positive with 7 10's, 10 9's & 8 8's, with no score lower than a 4 and just 2 more middling scores. Released in September 2002 as the lead single from her 3rd album 'This Is Me...Then', and features rappers Jadakiss + Styles P, but on it's UK release they wasn't always credited on this for some reason. This also makes this the last to feature here from that era and is often considered as one of her most iconic signature songs, even to this day she still gets the nickname title of this track, as well as the cultural impact that is still talked about some 15 years later (wow I feel old). Originally this wasn't meant to feature on the album, as she felt that it didn't fit in with the theme of the album and felt this and the follow up single sound too much like her previous hits, but the label disagreed and thought that they were both potential smashes that had to be there, and it turned out to be a wise decision as they both did become massive success. I actually do like this song, despite it's quite silly lyrics that are basically a contradiction as fame has definitely changed her, but do like the overall theme of the song and it is catchy with it's cleaver use of several samples that create a fun little number. Even the music video is just as infamous as the song which features her then boyfriend Ben Affleck who at the time were the most talked about power couples who ended up crashing and burning, the theme of the album is about him and the overexposure caused a massive backlash that badly affected both their careers, and Ben Affleck regrets starring in the video as he states that this nearly ruined his career, but honestly that was down to the bad movie choices he made, namely that awful 'Gigli' they both starred in the following and rightfully tanked at box office. Upon release like I already said became a massive success by reaching #3 in both the UK and USA, becoming her 9th and 7th top 10 hit respectively. Elsewhere it topped the charts in Canada & Hungary, while hitting top 5 in Brazil, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, France & Norway, then hitting top 10/20 peaks everywhere else.

'All I Have' is great! One of my favourite 2003 hits.

It was an impressive 8th Top 5 hit in a row for her in the UK (10th overall) - a pity that 'I'm Glad' ended that streak when it peaked at #11. On the subject of the 'This Is Me... Then' singles, I've always found it curious how late on 'Baby I Love U!' was released & that it managed Top 3. The release dates & peaks:

November 2002 - #3 - Jenny From The Block

March 2003 - #2 - All I Have

June 2003 - #11 - I'm Glad

March 2004 - #3 - Baby I Love U!

Also, I had no idea that 'This Is Me... Then' is her best selling album in the UK. :o It's certified 2xPlatinum (peak: #13) - I guess it must have sold healthily during Christmas 2002. I'd have imagined that 'J.Lo' was her best selling, but that is Platinum certified (peak: #2).

07. Ain't It Funny | J-LO | Avg.8.733

Highest Scores: 11: (Nick F1, PAJ88, Simon), 10: (Davidson, Regina, all is vanity, Addy King, Floater, SameBoy), Lowest Scores: 4.5: (Lukuzz)

At #7 and finishing 11 places higher than it's remix version proving that the original is always better, 'Ain't It Funny', released in June 2001 as the 3rd single from her 2nd album 'JLO'. Originally this was set to be on the soundtrack to her movie 'The Wedding Planner', but the director Adam Shankman felt that it had too much of a Latin influence due to it's use of timbales, and even though JLO disagreed and instead came up with a compromise and used 'LDCAT' the lead single instead, and this ended up on her album instead, which worked out well enough in the end. I'm so glad this ended up so high here and was in the top 5 for a while, until towards the end when the scores began to slip slightly and caused this to slide down, but #7 is still a respectable position. This is another great track from JLO with it's mix of Latin + R&B both blends really well together thanks to it's solid production and you can really feel the sexiness and romance throughout the catchy and infectious rhythm that creates a fantastic pop song that's a definite highlight in her career. Upon release the song became another success for by reaching #3 in the UK and elsewhere it topped the charts in Poland and hit top 5 peaks in Netherlands, Romania, Sweden, Scotland + Belgium. Along with top 10 peaks in Ireland, Norway, Switzerland, Portugal + Spain, then finally top 20/40 everywhere else. This version wasn't given a release in the USA, instead opting for the remix version with Ja Rule which would be a success in it's own right.
So glad 'Ain't It Funny' did so well on here. It is incredible and so close to being my ultimate favourite by her.

I remember when I listened to the chart every week and they used to do a proper album rundown, that album featured very consistently in the top 20 for a very long time.

'Ain't It Funny' is a glorious pop song.

Wow, I never noticed that gap between releases! That makes Baby I Love U's peak even more surprising, and more impressive too I suppose. Also echoing your surprise that TITM is her highest-selling album by quite a margin!

Ain't It Funny was my original favorite J-Lo song  I should add to the commentary that even though it didn't chart in the US, the video did get played on music channels (how I discovered it in the first place) and the song made it on the Now 9 tracklist (track #5 even, pretty darn high for a song that didn't chart), so it wasn't overlooked entirely! I can't remember if I ever heard it on the radio though.

^ Oops at me typo-ing I'm Glad's peak as #1! :heehee: I wonder if Baby I Love U! benefited from a low-selling chart / no other exciting releases in the week it came out? It just seems so random for it to have done so well, so long after the album release.

Oh yes, 9 weeks Top 20 in all! J.Lo only managed three.

Interestingly her biggest album from a chart run perspective was the 'J to tha L-O' remix album - 8 weeks Top 10, 14 weeks Top 20. None of her other albums managed more than 2 weeks inside the Top 10.

I know most of you will probably find this sacrilegious, but I marginally prefer the "remix" version of Ain't It Funny. :kink: The original version is one of my favourite ever Latin pop songs though.

Jennifer releasing a couple of songs with the same title but with totally different lyrical content (I'm Real and Ain't It Funny) was quite a strange tactic, looking back.

It seems that the OCC includes the Murder Remix downloads/streams of I'm Real onto the sales of the original version (presumably because they were both released within the same single in 2001). However they still manage to separate the different versions of Ain't It Funny. http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=192204 Despite the original charting a place higher, the remix outsold it fairly considerably!

Ain't It Funny

the 'baby i love u!' remix featuring R.Kelly was heavily supported by galaxy (before it was capital) & the main reason it did so well.

it makes a completely different song + it came at a time when R.Kelly was having a resurgence + was sonically similar to Ignition (Remix) from the year before.

the cd single cover even mentions that it features the remix.

Ooh I see, thanks for the info! :o Somehow that version completely passed me by at the time. *Listens now*
yeah, new vocals + everything! :o i think i prefer the remix..

06. Love Don't Cost A Thing | J-LO | Avg.8.758

Highest Scores: 10: (Jack, Regina, Liam, SamJudd, HarryEzra, Nick F1, blacksquare, Adelina555, Floater, Jay), 9/9.5: (all is vanity, PAJ88, Mack, gavindeejay, Lukuzz, JosephStyles, SameBoy),
Lowest Scores: 7/7.5: (Davidson, CianS, Simon, Tawdry Hepburn, StillJupiter, Scene)

At #6 is 'Love Don't Cost A Thing', I bet this will come as surprise to many of you, even me, I thought this would be top 5 at least. Released in January 2001 as the lead single from her 2nd album 'J-LO', and coming at what was about to be the ultimate peak of her career, firstly by gaining the nickname JLO and was the start of her transitioning into a sex symbol along with a very high profile relationship with Sean Combs which would ultimately end not long after the song's release. Originally the album was gonna be called 'A Passionate Journey', but ended up using her persona instead as it felt more personal and romantic. The song is a fun piece of pop/R&B fluff with lyrics that are obviously aimed at her then boyfriend, which makes the whole thing very tongue and cheek with it's catchy hooks and thumping bass that makes this the perfect lead single to start off her 2nd era which would also be her most successful of her career as well as being an all out JLO classic. Even the music video became well remembered as she began a relationship with one of the back-up dancers Cris Judd who would end up becoming husband No2. Upon release the song became a smash hit by becoming her first UK #1 hit and hit top 3 in the USA. Elsewhere it would also top the charts in Brazil, Canada, Finland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania & Spain, as well as top 5/10 peaks mostly everywhere else, therefore becoming one of the biggest hits of her career.
