Recent anniversaries:

21 years ago:

22/11/99 - Melanie C - Northern Star

16 years ago:

22/11/04 - Geri Halliwell - Ride It

As always it's a bit depressing how long ago all of these were. Ride It release is pretty much half of my life ago. I seem to remember some DenDen members were really annoyed that Girls Aloud were #1 when Geri was "only" #4! Who would have guessed then that it would be Geri's final Top 10 single? (Unless you like to count Bridge Over Troubled Water but it feels like a stretch to me, ha)

Absolutely loved 'Ride It' at the time, I rarely return to it now however. At the time it wasn't like anything out at all  I probably overplayed it that's why I don't listen to it now, silly 14 year old me.

Been playing 'Northern Star' a lot this week, forgot how good it is. It's very forgotten though which is a shame.

Happy 23rd Anniversary of the release of Spiceworld: The Movie.

I went to see it on Boxing Day with my family ☺️❤️

I never saw it in the cinema but do remember getting the video with the lime green cassette. ^_^
I saw it at a cinema in Headingley up the road from where Mel B lived when in Kirkstall and at the end she talks about going down the stairs and going to the chippy... you go down the stairs of the cinema and there is a chippy famous throughout Leeds right near that cinema so I’m still convinced that is her talking about her own experiences there to this day 😂 I was so excited when we were leaving and was saying mum let’s get chips from the chip shop 😂
I went to see it aged 11 or 12 with my family and a couple of friends for Christmas. It was a big deal and like the first time we all went to the cinema in the city together. I think it was also my first cinema experience. And I loved it!

14 years ago today, 28th June 2007: Spice Girls reunited! The first time they’d been active since 2000, and the first time all 5 had been seen together since 1998.

What an incredibly exciting day that was! It felt like it had been a very long time coming. I spent that whole day watching news reports, browsing the internet (discussing on DenDen, of course x) and looking at the new pictures / watching snippets of the press conference. It was quite surreal!

There was so much uncertainty over the years regarding whether they would ever reform, but I tried to remain hopeful. At times that was hard, mainly because Melanie C was so consistently & adamantly against it. With hindsight, I feel like she wasn’t truly ready to comeback at that point. We know her hand was forced because the other girls wanted to. In fairness, she was very professional and committed to the tour, she never gave the impression that she didn’t want to be there - but I don’t believe she felt truly proud at that point. If you compare her general demeanour then in comparison to the past 3 years, and there is clearly a marked difference. She’s definitely proud and passionate now, maybe even more so than some of the other girls.

As always, it feels very 🤯 that so much time has passed. That ROTSG era is like ancient history (lol). All this time later & us fans are still here, and looking forward to the next occasion they’re together again! Which happily feels like a question of “when” and not “if”.

I can’t believe that was 14 years ago. Time flies. I was glued to sky news that day and I was only on MySpace at the time 🤭

I remember this day as it was yesterday. I was working as a TA that day at a local school and I couldn’t wait to go home to see what the news was. DenDen was very slow when I returned home but it was magical. I can’t remember if I spoke with Jay on msn that day but I’m sure we did

I would have easily guessed that at the time, to be fair.

OK but 14 years ago is SHOCKING :arrr: Perhaps more shocking than the Wannabe25 celebrations ah

I remember thinking that it was a quite awkward re-start for them. The vibe was all a bit 'off' to be honest, although of course I bought it all at the time! I personally never really bought the whole 'we're doing this for the final time' as it wasnt really a huge nostaligia point around them then.

Im glad they did it though as otherwise we wouldnt have had so many great memories of that time! The tour was ok, but im glad they got much better from that. Melanie C really turned it around, didnt she though? How amazing that she is invested Spice now!

I was 19 at the time and found out about this when I got home from finishing my high school final exams, so I feel like I had died and gone to heaven! Such a good feeling at once from all of the above.

I later flew to London with a friend and my brother to see them before the Christmas break (and meet Mel B at Selfridges!), so this tour is perfection in my eyes.

I also didn't buy the 'last time around' thing, but for me it does feel like the last time when VB was a contributing part of the group so I'm glad I experienced this era fully.

Time flies but that Geri dress still looks dreadful. What was she thinking?

Melanie C looked stunning. The others not their best. Emma was pregnant though.

Vicky B Karen phase was awful. Even Mel B didn’t look as good as always.

And the tour.......

Thank God we got the 2019 reunion ❤️

I would have easily guessed that at the time, to be fair.

Based on what?

When Ride It reached #4 there was really no suggestion that things were destined to go wrong for her. Given that she’d been away for 3 years, it was a solid return. That was a better chart position than any single from the albums Free Me (Emma) and Reason (Melanie C). Emma had three Top 10s in a row from that album. On paper, in that moment, there was no reason why Geri wouldn’t manage similarly.

What couldn’t be foreseen is that 6 months afterwards (quite a significant gap between singles - due to the album’s direction changing / management changes) Desire became her first release to not receive major airplay support. It was then that it became apparent that things weren’t going to be smooth sailing for her.

Lol it’s strange but I feel exactly the same! Somehow that reunion feels like it should be more recent than it is. Whereas it kind of feels right that Wannabe is 25. Time is weird!

I was also 19 then! I wish I could be that age again

I agree, it’s a bit odd that they seemingly felt so confident that it would be the final time. I mean they were 31-34 years old when they announced the reunion, strange that they thought they might never do it again. Then again Melanie C spent most of her late 20s being convinced she’d never do Spice Girls stuff again lol. Thankfully in their 40s they’re all (bar Victoria...) open to opportunities. You really never can say never.
