A Girl Like Me has 4 great songs in it. The rest are mediocre at best, unfortunately...

 

My Happy Place has 3 amazing songs, 1 ok and the rest are just bad lol

 

She has hinted recently that she is going to do a new album and that she now feels more confident with her writing music. Here's hoping :wub:

My Happy Place I agree 3 amazing songs but I think 2 ok (or good) songs but the rest is naff. Out of interest what are your amazing / OK songs? Mine are

1. Too many teardrops

2. I wish I could have loved you more

3. Baby please don’t stop

4. I only wanna be with you

5. Emotion

TBH with you, I think there is a good album somewhere within My Happy Place, and Emma does sound lovely throughout it which helps. But it's badly produced, it sounds cheap as hell and songs like 2 Become 1, Here Comes The Sun and Don't Call Me Baby just sound like expensive karaoke to me....

 

2 become 1 is an abomination, Robbie sounds like he recorded his part on the loo having a shit and the production is awful.

 

Here comes the sun is meh, I get it I get why she likes it but keep your kids away from your music.

 

The rest ranges from great to bland, her voice sounds great throughout. I happen to love the laid back Ibiza vibe if Don't call me baby.

To be fair Here comes the sun, All I need to get by and Don't call me baby are ok I guess. The songs themselves are great it's just her versions leave alot to be desired and why anyone would choose to listen to them over the originals I don't know, they offer nothing to the album just complete fillers.

My happy place is certainly a front loaded album, interesting decision to put the 2 originals right at the start of the album.

 

Emotions is a gorgeous little number that saves the 2nd half of the record.

You're all I need to get by... seriously?? Lol nope. I love Marvin Gaye's version of that song though so that might be clouding my judgement....

I guess I like A Girl Like Me better than most.

 

To my ears What Took You So Long, Take My Breath Away, High On Love, and Better Be Careful sounded like the obvious singles...and would have made a strong chart run. I think High On Love is the second best song on the album...and it (along with Better Be Careful) deserved a top 10.

 

I think most of the rest is solid album material. To me, the only truly 'meh' songs are Been There, Done That and She Was a Friend of Mine. With those two...coupled with two 'fine' covers...I get the album's not perfect. But I don't think What Took You So Long is the lone redeemer of it either.

 

I do think out of her material she'd done, though...both Invincible and Free Up Your Mind (perhaps with a punchier, slicker mix) are quite a bit better than the songs I mentioned above. Not sure the full story on Invincible...as it ended up being released as a single by another artist in that same general time period. Emma had a better shot at making the song famous.

 

I do find it unusual throughout the course of the album, she manages to have material that's both mature for her image....AND material that sounds even younger than the Spice album material from five years before. Not a complaint, really. It's possible an entire album of guitary lite-pop may have become boring.

It's nowhere near as good as Gaye's original, for sure. But it's not a bad cover, it is well sang but it's just a bit pointless ah

It went Gold in the UK which is 100k

 

Total sales are 125k +

 

Platinum in the UK is 300,000 so it would need to double its sales and a bit

Both A Girl Like Me and Scream If You Wanna Go Faster sold under 200k

 

This wasnt great for 2001 standards and showed the fanbase was starting to get fed up of solo spice.

 

Then again both enjoyed huge number 1 hit singles that year so interest was still there as single acts.

 

Victoria bombed with both her single and album.

I know northern star went triple platinum, did geri,s debut go platinum?

Ya i would say a few of those should have silver or be very close now. I love northern star, its my second fave solo spice album after reason, i know many dont rate reason at all but i still love the album and wish it had done better.

I think you are very right to point that out. People were exhausted with so much Spice related stuff. Not only the solos, as the main group album also suffered, but it was clear people were just not there anymore for it.

 

The fact that some singles did really well in 2001 such as WTYSL and IRM means that those two were really good songs that really connected with the public, not necessarily to do with their status as Spice Girls. Honestly, beyond summer 2000, all sales for all of them were pretty bad for their standards apart from WTYSL, IRM and maybe Feels So Good which managed over 100k. Across the board, for all of them should have just taken a break from all the solo crap that was everywhere at the time. They really saturated the industry without focusing on the main attraction (the group), so no wonder people got bored...

I love reason I think if you replace Do I and Soul boy with any two of the Reason B-sides it’s flawless... (which I may have done on iTunes :lol: )

Hot by Mel B is certified silver as it shipped 60k and certs were done on shipments back in the day.

 

Life in Mono is probably less than 5k away from a silver certification.
