They obviously have a power to stop the unreleased tracks being put out otherwise we'd have had releases like the Bananarama London Records reissues by now.

The only unheard music we'll hear will be a new studio album they all believe in and want heard. I guess it's still possible after listening to Melanie's chat with Biff.

Well, we know that *some* music is coming, cos it was announced when the news of the movie came out from the official film studio. They said it was to be soundtracked by old and new music, so maybe we will have that!

This might be a cynical outlook, but I'm expecting the animated film to go into development hell and then die a quiet death.

It's not that I necessarily want that to happen. I'll take anything I can get out of the group.

But. Really. This idea? It's so...unprecedented. When has an animated film ever been made about a pop group that hasn't been a force in music for 20 years? I mean. If they were doing an animated film about New Kids on the Block right now, I'd think it was the most random thing in the world.

I 100% get that the girls are (and will be for a long time) in major demand for live shows. But their core audience is in their mid-30s now. I'm assuming an animated film will be targeted at kids. Is this not directed the wrong way? Is the hope that parents will drag their kids along to "come listen to mommy's music" ?

Anyway. Hope I'm wrong. Hope it comes out. Hope it's a big hit. But. Y'know. These are my thoughts for now...

I too think that the animated movie is such a random thing and im not that enthusiastic about it... just that we might get some new songs out of it, that would be a plus lol

These things can get stuck in development hell for sure. The only thing making me confident it will come is it is Simon's idea and baby and he and XIX will be dealing with all annimated movie stuff.

It was Simon's idea and it was the reason they met in Feb 2018 to all 5 sign on to do it. That is the reason Victoria is on board too as she does as Simon says.

It could go either way, if it is good and they get the animation right then it could be a massive success. Annimated movies are all random stories tbh if it is good kids wont care if it is spice girls related it is just an extra pull for parents to go or take their kids. The reviews will make or break the film.

It's clearly Simon's idea and that will make it go forward but it also doesnt bode super well as I hope they are more involved in this than they were in that awful musical ah. Outside of the Spice Girls themselves and their touring, Simon hasnt been a great manager to his acts. Even with the last tour, Modest! were drafted in to manage the tour (thank god!)

Also, Simon isn't VB's business partner or manager anymore, I think. Apparently she moved on last year, right? I remember reading this somewhere...

I'd say he has been a great manager to Will Young, and S Club 7 were very successful (even if he wasn't a great manager to them personally)...

He used to be a great manager, but I think time hasnt been kind to him. I think Will Young and S Club 7 arent with him anymore either. Pretty sure Annie Lennox and the Spice Girls are the last music acts under his wing

90s is a big business since millennials have grown up, the girls are 90s icons. Meanwhile, musical movies also make big bucks both movie gross and music wise. I think they did a research about this. The girls can't go with the biopic like Queen yet, they don't have a big catalouge like ABBA. They're trying to expand their audience to the new gen, that's how they made their mark 20+ years ago, planting the seed into the new gen. "Unprecedented" is exactly the whole point like Geri said that they've always wanted to be the first to do it. Judging from screenwriters, this animated movie is aiming for girls , kids and probably families. Their personalities, chemistry and music really do have the potential for the fun cartoon movie. If it's a hit, they'll make money from the merch as well.

They'll get support from spice fans but they need to be committed to do things together all five as a musical act to draw 90s casual fans back, like telling the world we're back. Don't count on the reviews, chick flicks never get good reviews in general especially from those misogynists and straight males, put the spice girls in there you'll get even more negative reviews lol. The audience is happy or not, that's all that matters. Paramount did well with Sonic, the designs, the fun and all that.

Well. I know I should reserve any judgement until we see a trailer (...if the project gets that far...).

But...I also kinda wonder if an animated film by a major studio can truly understand them...and their somewhat unique appeal.

Spice World isn't a very good movie in a lot of ways, but it was very keen in one specific area. It understood the girls' audience. They created a movie that can play to kids...just as well as it can to a gay audience there for the camp factor. It's honestly a rare feat. How many movies could be played at a kids' sleepover party...and also at a drag bar re-enactment and perfectly fit at both? Frankly, the bad movie elements of it make it play even better on the midnight movie circuit now. Spice World may not have had the best team of filmmakers...but it did have people who got the group.

Will Paramount Animation let their freak flag fly?

Anyway. If this gets off the ground, I really hope the animation passes the social media test. The last thing we need is an audience reaction disaster like Cats or the original design of Sonic the Hedgehog. I can just imagine Twitter being littered with "WHY IS VICTORIA'S HEAD SO DAMN BIG?" "EMMA'S EYES LOOK DEAD" "CARTOON GERI IS WHAT YOU SEE BEFORE YOU DIE" And so forth.

There will be challenges for sure. It can't be one dimensional cartoon for only kids. More dimensions and layers need to be added creatively so all audience can connect with. One good sign about Paramount is that they listened to fans, they took the time and put more money to redesign Sonic while Universal didn't' care. Probably one of the reasons why the fans supported them back. Also, it's been over 20 years, the girls can't not know their old audience. I won't hope for great reviews since the critics and press have always been harsh on them. But if they create good movie with great new songs, there will be nomination slots in song/soundtrack categories in big awards to look forward to as well but that would be too far to think about right now.

I seriously think there is zero chance of song / soundtrack nominations in any big categories to look forwards to... unless you're Disney animated films tend to get ignored.

Could you imagine it though, Spice Girls win an Oscar  :w00t:

Let me dream lol, true they won't win or nominated. But imagine, Spice Girls performing at the Oscars though. Oscars songs last year were awful and boring. There are also Grammys, Golden Globes and Baftas too. Seeing all those songs got nominated for big awards, can't help myself thinking about the girls.

Had a thought. I realize any song the girls did in the 90s would be very unlikely to get Oscar attention (not because of the songs' quality...but because of the group's perception at the time). But. In theory at least...couldn't they have thrown Viva Forever at the Best Song category back then? I'm sure Academy members would have rather keeled over dead than nominate something from Spice World. But. Had Viva Forever been the submission...it'd at least make a few voting members perk up and say..."...well...I wasn't expecting...that..."

I would think any song from Spice World could technically be classified as "written for the movie", right? I mean. They were writing the album between scenes, after all.

Anyway. Spice World was released in 1998 in America, so any song would have been eligible for the awards show in 1999. It was When You Believe by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey that won best song that year. I guess I'm biased, but I think Viva Forever is quite a bit better, actually.

On the flip side, Too Much was nominated for Worst Song at the Razzies. Which. Look. Spice World deserved some of its Razzie attention...but Too Much certainly didn't. Too Much was nominated against Don't Wanna Miss a Thing by Aerosmith...which somehow got nominated for Worst Song at the Razzies AND Best Song at the Oscars. Go figure.

Last thought. It may still be something of a longshot, but I actually think the girls would be MORE likely to get Grammy/Oscar consideration for a movie soundtrack song today...than they would back in the 90s. The harsh perception of them has softened. The awards shows aren't actually as stuffy and pretentious. Look. Everything Is Awesome from the Lego Movie managed to get nominated for Best Song. If the girls come up with something catchy and likable enough...I don't think it's *impossible*, per se.

I don't get the buzz about W.O.M.A.N It's really crap

I agree I just threw my studio version mp3 in the trash bin and clicked empty

I don't think Viva Forever was ever considered a Spice World The Movie song (it's not even in the film, I think).

But yes, if the perceptions around them at the time were better and not so much as a 'pop trash group', Too Much would have easily fitted in the Best Song for a Soundtrack kind of categories.

Here's hoping they will create some quality music for the animated film that is coming out. But honestly, I have very little faith in these types of side projects, if the theatre musical is anything to go by...

Viva Forever's in the movie. It plays when the girls go revisit that abandoned cafe and then walk to a bench to talk about fame.

I know there's some murkiness to the Best Song rules...with the song having to be written expressly for the movie production. I know in the 80s...Maniac from Flashdance was disqualified when it was learned an earlier version of the song existed before the film came along. But my general feeling is nearly everything from the girls' second album could technically qualify for the category (similar to Prince's material for Purple Rain). They recorded the second album at the same time as the movie was in production. They're titled the same thing. They're definitely linked projects. The only exceptions would probably be Move Over (the chorus existed before the girls/producers built the rest of the song around it) and bonus track Step to Me (part of the Spice sessions).

And if they were to hedge their bets by putting forth just one song...I would think Viva Forever, Stop, Too Much, or even Never Give Up on the Good Times would have been good choices. Again, they weren't respected enough to get the nomination. But their songs were technically better than a lot of what does make the Academy list.

If the animated movie does get off the ground, I think they have a really unique challenge with the new music. I'm assuming the animated Spices will not be singing Holler in a kids' movie. Instead, they're going to have to record material that can fit alongside their 90s hits...even though both the girls as solo artists and their collaborators have long evolved from that sound. I think we've been down this road before...and a previous attempt to recapture that 1996-1998 sound is what brought us Headlines and Voodoo. Now, personally...I think Headlines is quite beautiful...and think Voodoo is "fine"...but there's no question they're divisive among fans. Can their work be better liked this time?

My hope is they can get something together along the lines of Can't Stop the Feeling from the Trolls movie...another Best Song nominee. Something that's big and broadly likable.

Spiceworld was basically a soundtrack album but they wouldn't have got in anyway. They were like 1.5 year old group, a toddler in the industries. Firstly, before crossing over to the Oscars at least you needed to be accepted first at the Grammys or being well respected artists for quite some time, Aerosmith was one of those. Secondly, The movie didn't do the songs justice at all, Viva Forever for example, the way they used the song in that scene was so lazy. The video on the contrary did the song justice. Today, they have a better chance. The Academy itself, over the years, has gained more younger members and more women so it's not so a hundred percent conservative or sexist like back in the day.

The challenge about the music, to be broadly likeable today it sure needs more modern sound but spice sound needs to be remained. Can't Stop the Feeling with more spice sound probably? The girls are also capable of beautiful ballads that would fit some touching scenes, no? Something like "The Place Where Lost Things Go" in Mary Poppins, a bit cheesy yet classy, heartfelt and beautiful, the Brit charm with some modern American polished. I don't know. Something like Headlines and Voodoo won't do the job, I think, sound dated already. They sure need modern music people in the team for the movie.

The song needs to serve the scene/the story well and vice versa, like a one-two punch, hit the audience right in the feels something like that. Personally, I think it's a fun project and I'm so ready for this lol, if it's a success it can go places. But success always comes with challenges I guess, another obstacle is how to get all five give their all a hundred percent. Lazy half-ass-ing won't get them nowhere. Remember what happend when all five gave their all and really believed in what they were doing? They were at the top of the world.
