Yeah! I bought the book and have been slowly but surely making my way through it! It's right up my street! It's really fascinating to here from some "behind the scenes" people, such as producers or even people who worked at magazines.

I think a lot of it we knew, but I don't think I'll ever tire of reading their story anyway lol.

The Greg Masuak quotes were definitely interesting to read, how there's no love lost with Simon. How interesting to learn that the official Who Do You Think You Are music video was not finished in his eyes but was signed off on. I've actually always loved that video but it interests me to think how it could have been better than it is.

The benefit of hindsight is certainly a factor here but it just feels crazy how many people in the industry were not feeling the Spice Girls while they attempted to promote Wannabe. How Smash Hits magazine was not supportive whatsoever to the extent they didn't even think it was worth printing song lyrics. Whereas Top of the Pops had more faith from the start.

Obviously to talk about the rest of the book is going off topic but it's well worth a read. Funny to think that Five and S Club 7 may not have existed without the Spice Girls, because both of those acts came from managers that the Spice Girls had fired. And even someone like Billie Piper came about as a result of her label essentially wanting a solo artist with a similar spirit i.e. a female artist who would appeal to female buyers.

I bought it for £17 and while this is pricier than I'd usually consider reasonable for a hardback book, I think it's worth it!

By yesterday I had finished the section on S Club 7 and then today there's such awful news about Paul passing away. :(

P.S. Goodbye and Holler/Let Love Lead the Way are still battling it out in polls taking place in other sections of the site... it's a "vote for your least favourite activity":

Looks like both are goners though

Avril Lavigne fans have noticed and posted today that her official insta has followed all 5 Spice Girls and the official group insta. Would she make a better opening act than Jess Glynne (just me guessing have no info)?

She would be a very random support act since she sounds nothing like them nor is she as relevant as Jess Glynn was when she opened for them. I thought Jess was a terrible choice personally but I can understand the logic she would draw some crowds that they might not (not that they had to worry about that). Someone like All Saints or Sugababes would be an excellent support act for Spice Girls.

If they did a Hyde Park concert I'd love for them to do a Girl Power day and have some other girl bands as their support acts, All Saints, Sugababes, The Saturdays, Atomic Kitten (would have said Girls Aloud). Would be so cool like "look at the bands that came in our wake."

Yes, I found it particularly interesting how they spoke about Kate Thornton, then editor of Smash Hits, refusing to come out of her office for the girls because she felt the magazine should be more aligned to the Britpop movement. I actually listened to her podcast show when Louise Redknapp was a guest and she tells a totally different story of how she embraced them. When it reality, she talks about shooting the Smash Hits cover for October 1996, well after they had blown up.

Avril would be perfect actually, she encompasis a nostalgia driven feeling towards the Grand Public that Jess Glynne doesnt. At least internationally, Avril would be a much more better choice for sure. She still releases and tours in the West and East.

I think this might be nothing to write about, but if they had an international tour being prepared (looloollloool I know...) then I wouldnt mind an Avril opening act! :teresa:

People are always a bit short sighted when it comes to a support act for the Spice Girls. Adding a band that you can see at car fest for £30 is pointless.

Because Avril Lavigne is such a huge act that draws in the crowds...

The entire point of my suggestion was that it would be a Girl Power celebration so there was at least some logic behind it.

She is currently on a sold out arena tour.

Avril Lavigne is a huge touring act across the world, across USA, Canada, Europe and Asia

Avril is a bit mismatched timewise from the Spice Girls by about five years (on the other hand, I'm the same age as Avril and remember lots of my peers being into Complicated and Sk8er Boi at the time, so maybe not), but yeah, she obviously still sells tickets of her own, which is why I'd be a bit surprised why she'd agree to do this?

Although maybe she'd see a net gain in getting slightly older women interested in her music since those still likely buy cds.

The one French venue has a capacity of 6,000, the one Amsterdam venue has a capacity of 700, 4 venues in Germany largest one is 4,200, she is doing Alexander Palace and O2 Apollo in U.K which are about 3,000, in Japan she is doing a theatre, exhibition centre and a hall… in the USA and Canada she is doing a mix of arenas, theatres and shopping centres.

So she is touring WW and the poster I saw for her UK/Europw dates everything was sold out.

So? She is an international touring act with a HEAP of nostalgia around her. If the Spice Girls had her as the opening act, it would have been all and all a good thing!! She would certainly make it more exciting than Jess f***ing Glynne

I'm not saying anything against her being the opening act, my reply was to Sammy's (rather rude) response commenting on people (me since I was the only one who suggested anyone else) being rather short sighted about support acts who don't draw in crowds, hence my response saying she isn't exactly a touring force, or a huge solo star anymore. If you're going for nostalgia acts then the ones I mentioned as a girl band tour de force would be perfect, All Saints couldn't be more so, as they were actually at the same time.

My point was proved by the fact she isn't doing any real big venues anymore in Europe or Asia (even several of the US ones are small venues), so it's doesn't support the narrative that was being pushed about short sighted people. Jess Glynn at the very least (who I found incredibly dull and actually I like Avril far more) was the biggest female act in the country at that moment in time with 6 or 7 #1s to her name.

I wonder if that's the only reason why she (or her team) decided to follow the girls?

Brian Cox is a big Spice Girls fan apparently :teresa:
