Spice Girls are #80 on the Billboard 100 Greatest Video Artists of All Time

https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/lis...c-video-artists

I just read through that. I mean. I think the girls should have been higher on the list...because of course I do.

Nirvana's at #10, for example. I'm definitely not taking anything away from the impact of the Smells Like Teen Spirit video. The song/video redefined the sound/look of music in the 90s. But you could argue that while Smells Like Teen Spirit set the business in one direction, Wannabe's single and video was nearly as effective at setting the business in another direction. Not saying the girls should be ahead of Nirvana necessarily. Just saying there should be less than a 70-place gap.

It's an American article, so they have less major video moments than in the UK. But at the very least, Wannabe and Say You'll Be There are more iconic than a lot of the artists' videos up through about #20. And I'm not sure I follow why, say, Brad Paisley's so far ahead of them...

By the way. They put Michael Jackson at #2. Madonna at #1. I'd probably switch it. No one redefined the music video like Michael Jackson. Though...truly...no one's historically managed to get more controversy out of videos than Madonna.

I kind of agree in most points. I think the Spice Girls' videos have been quite iconic, all of them (bar maybe Headlines and LLLTW lol) and personally they should have had bigger presence in this list, at least within the Top40. However, their catalogue is very small, so no wonder.

However, I am not sure on Michael Jackson. Madonna totally deserves this, her discography and video works are and have been so intrumental to cultural and industry changes, its insane. Not saying that MJ doesnt deserve it either, but whilst he has like 3 videos that are seen as iconic, well Madonna kind of beats that by a long mile.

You can also pick out videos such as Vogue, Like a Virgin, Express Yourself, Erotica, Ray of Light and Like A Prayer as some of the most iconic ever, for they not only created a change in the sector BUT their cultural impact in undeniable.

You could literally draw a line between cultural impact and changes in attitude around Feminism and Queer inclusivity and those videos. MJ doesnt have that. I would say the same about the videos from Wannabe to Stop and how they created cultural impacts beyond what was the norm for girl groups or even female acts of their time.

So yes, Madonna deserves it and the Spice Girls deserved much better. My hunch is that if the Spice Girls had been more active for a little longer, they would have landed at least in the Top30 of this list - and they already deserve it in my opinion, but people seem to have short memories eheh

Apparently PCD are coming to Bangkok some time next year. The date will be announced soon, probably the second half of the year. I guess the negotiations are always going on behind the scenes in the industry. Can we still expect the world tour annoucment this year from the girls? Looks like Australia has flatten the curve. I read that Live Nation plans to go back to full capacity live concerts starting last quarter next year, before that it can't be full so they have to cut the pay for the artists. Would love full capacity for the girls. Social distancing is not for Spiceworld lol

It's probably why Mel C has been saying 'in the next two years' or something like that. I would expect an announcement next year to coincide with the 25th anniversary, at best. Before that, I doubt it. It's too uncertain all over the world for now...

Hopefully Geri is still on board by then. :cheer:

Rumours are that Little Mix will announce a tour next week for APRIL 2021 :o

Seems a tad too optimistic to me as it would be Arenas and the odd small stadium... April is too soon, I think. But makes me glad the Spices are holding on until we have more certainty in the world, tbh...

SLIGHTLY OUT OF TOPIC BUT CUTE ANYWAY

Just randomly bumped into this on twitter, as Darkchild described being influenced by UK Garage sounds and that the Spice Girls took him out to a club whilst recording for Forever, and one of Destiny's Child's biggest hits Say My Name is a consequence of that:

YouKnowIGotSoul: So right after the success you had with Whitney and Brandy, “Say My Name” comes out which you produced for Destiny’s Child. That sounds totally different from the others. Take us through that process.

Rodney Jerkins: For me, I get bored too quick! Because it was all happening so fast, from 95-98, it was like record after record after record. I just got bored with my own sound. I wanted to do something different. I caught some inspiration in London, working with The Spice Girls. They took me out to this club and I heard this DJ spinning this two step type of sound, which was huge in the clubs. I wanted to try to implement it into what I do. This DJ made me a CD and I studied it on my whole flight back. The first song that I worked on when I got back was “Say My Name”. That two step garage sound, you don’t hear it too much on the song now, but if you heard the original version, it was all that UK garage sound. I flipped it later on, but that’s where the inspiration came from for that, and it gave me the next breadth in my sound.

That's interesting that they inadvertently helped inspire one of Destiny's Child's biggest hits! :o I wonder when Rodney and Spice Girls first met? Destiny's Child - The Writing's on the Wall album was recorded from December 98 to March 99 according to Wikipedia.

For some reason I didn't realise Darkchild was so young when Forever was made, he was only 22/23!

I think they started working together in early 1999 and throughout that year, wasnt it? So it might have been in a very early session...

Interesting bit on the wikipedia of Say My Name: 'During the photo shoot for the album, Beyoncé's father-manager Mathew Knowles went to the studio informing her that Jerkins reworked on the track she "hated". He told her to "just have to take a listen to it". When the new mix was played to the group, they liked it '

I guess that makes sense, since the album was released in November of 1999. The photoshoot was probably done around that time too, so maybe Say My Name was recorded originally before the girls met Darkchild, and then he re-worked it after going out partying in London with the Spice Girls.

^ It's kinda an interesting timeline. DC's Writings On the Wall album was out in July 1999. Jerkins didn't actually enter the studio with the Spices until several weeks later. However, I believe the girls started taking meetings with him in late 1998. And who knows? Maybe they all went clubbing together in the months following before they got down to work. I remember articles being written about Mel going out clubbing just weeks after Pheonix was born.

Side note. While Richard Stannard got a special box seat for the 2019 tour, I wonder if Rodney Jerkins got an invite? It would be a chance to see two songs he wrote be performed at a stadium (...which...honestly, might not be all that novel for him). Despite the girls totally abandoning Forever at the time, it seems that relationship remained friendly. In recent years, Victoria took her son to record with him. Fred Jerkins has wanted to work with Emma again.

Wiki states that DC's album was out in November?

I doubt that Rodney got an invite to the tour tbh but could be that he was busy or didnt want to make the effort to travel so far <_<

The Wiki page I'm seeing says the album was out in July...but that the Say My Name single was released in November. But I don't know if those release dates are the same for every country or anything. Also unusual is that the single was released in November...but the video didn't come out until February 2000 (with the new members). I definitely identify that song as belonging to the early 2000s instead of the 90s. Anyway. What an odd time for that group. Two original group members are on the single cover...two different ones are in the video...

Oh, you're right, I was reading it wrong :arrr:

Strange times indeed. Still, what a TUNE! Say My Name is one of the best songs of that decade, in my opinion! :cheer:

I'd take it with a pinch of salt but there's 3 articles on the Daily Mail, The Sun and The Mirror about the group recreating the Wannabe music video for the 25th Anniversary :hehe:

That would be interesting...

THE Spice Girls hope to reshoot the video for their smash-hit debut Wannabe to mark their 25th anniversary.

The idea came up after coronavirus forced them to forget a final, celebratory tour.

It is one of the ideas being kicked around by Mel C, 46, Emma Bunton, 44, Geri Horner, 47, and Mel B, 45.

Victoria Beckham, 46, is said to be “exceedingly unlikely” to be involved.

A source said: “The Spice Girls were hoping to hit the road in 2021 to mark their big anniversary but now it’s not possible because of the pandemic.

“They’re all in touch weekly and are trying to come up with new ideas on how they can do something special to mark the big day.

“Mel C suggested doing something around Wannabe — including the idea of possibly re-working the video for social media.

“There are so many options and nothing is off-limits. They want to give the fans something special.”

Wannabe, which hit No1 in 1996, was the group’s best-selling song.

The video was shot in the entrance and on the staircase of the former Midland Grand Hotel in St Pancras, London, after permission to film in Barcelona was denied.

They are scrambling for a workable idea as the tour is already pushed back a year. You were supposed to be dancing to Wannabe on its release week at Hyde Park.

At least they see determined to do something to celebrate the 25th anniversary but it might be a bit disappointing unless they come up with a great idea that can work during these times.

A reworking video for me could work if they had a 2021 remix, like a Kygo sort of thing and a CD/Vinyl special anniversary release.

Yeah it they are gonna remix it and Release it then I guess it would tide me over until end of 2021 or early 2022 when they can hopefully tour again
