Day #15...

Album Of the Year

Cameron:

I had originally put Kelly Clarkson - Meaning Of Life in the EOY thread in the lounge, however, I completely forgot So Good was released this year (flop mod and stan). I'll be honest, like most of the site, I was a tad disappointed with the quality of So Good after waiting so long for Zara to finally release her international album. However, with that being said, I have grown to LOVE the album and seeing her perform most of it live was obviously the selling point. The singles are all bops, So Good (the song) is so underrated as it jams. TG4M deserved better and Sundown deserves a remix with Nicki Minaj or something. I Can't Fall In Love Without You was something I was a bit meh on at first but hearing it live changed my mind. Don't Let Me Be Yours deserved radio plays too. Bye.

Jonjo:

Couldn't be anything else really for me. Just been trying to think of all the pop albums I've listened to on repeat and only had a handful... Been such a poor year for pop albums imo. :( But everyone has that one artist who can change things and not let you down, for me it's Kelly  'Meaning Of Life' didn't really impact on first listen like usual with her albums, but it's Kelly, I couldn't give up. I'm so glad I didn't! 'I Don't Think About You' has always been the highlight for me. But 'Heat', 'Move You', 'Medicine' and 'Don't You Pretend' are also extreme highlights. It is also her best album, vocally!

UltraReputation:

What a shock :o My favourite album of 2017 obviously has to be Taylor's sixth masterpiece (with melodrama and lust for life completeing 2017's holy trinity). From album highlight and anthemic Don't Blame Me to songs that completely go off such as I Did Something Bad, this album has a mixture of everything and slays. Taylor's lyrics are great as ever (as especially highlighted on New Years Day's hook) and even though it takes time getting used to it, the production also slays! An amazing album and one I've raved about loads ofc on here <3

Day #16...

A song everyone must hear before the new year

Cameron:

Probably my favourite artist to discover this year. Sigrid has provided bop after bop and really knows how to produce pop perfection. I absolutely adored Don't Kill My Vibe and Plot Twist was a JAM! (Her EP is also really great!) Strangers hit me instantly and her performance on Sounds Like Friday Night sealed its fate as one of my favourite songs of Q4. Her vocals are so raw, I love them and her stage presence is second to none. Honorable mention goes to Hailee Steinfeld - Let Me Go!

Jonjo:

A song that is fast creeping up to become a fave of mine recently. It's by new boy band PRETTYMUCH and it's called 'No More'. The whole song is is just so slick and smooth. It really reminds me of what *NSync (best boy band ever) would come out with if they were starting out today. It's very much one of their more Urban tracks mixed in with something 5H would record. Really willing this to become a hit in the new year!

UltraReputation:

If you need a killer pure pop perfection bop before the year ends, Raincheck is the song you need to hear! Some of you would've heard this through BJSC but for those who don't participate in that and like pop, I highly recommend this. The chorus completely goes off and this is just one of those songs that you will have stuck in your head for ages!

Tad early for tomorrow (by 20 mins soz)
Really liked Strangers when Sigrid was on SLFN but her facial expressions in the video are awful!

Great album picks of the year!! Even if I think Kelly's one is one of her more weaker efforts but reputation and So Good are amazing.

Also, shocked Cameron didn't choose Bratz so good for movie song :o

Day #17...

Favourite lyric from a song

Cameron:

This one was rather difficult to pick because I love so many songs. As you all know, Gabrielle Aplin is one of my favourite artists and her songwriting abilities are just exceptional. She is currently saving pop music with her EP's which y'all overlook because of your basic taste... Anyway, I am going to be a bit of a 'Typical White Girl' and go for a cringy line you would find on Tumblr but the opening lines to Home remain my favourite.

"I'm a phoenix in the water, a fish that's learned to fly". I just feel that it symbolises breaking free of the day-to-day routine that is expected of you and encourages us to not be afraid to move out of our comfort zones in life. It shows freedom and conveys the ability to feel comfortable in the skin we are in. I feel this is a message that is particularly important on this site given all our insecurities.

Jonjo:

Lyric: "Why can't we be like that? Wish we could be like that. "

I couldn't continue further without featuring my Queens. 'Secret Love Song' has always been a firm favourite of mine, but then again, I'm a sucker for a huge, powerful pop ballad. This song is one of the most special songs in pop, in the last 10 years. The message is super powerful and 100% clear. The lyric I chose in particular is simple but powerful.

UltraReputation:

Lyric: Hey you call me up again just to break me like a promise, so casually cruel in the name of being honest.

Oops it's Taylor for me again today :kink: Tbh I don't really have a certain lyric that's my favourite so I've gone for a lyric that always breaks me when I hear it </3 This is the highlight of one of Taylor's best songs and the raw emotion in this lyric always gets me. Taylor's voice breaking is heartbreaking and the lyric just hits me personally so hard, it's devastating but relatable and true af. One of the best lyrics ever from a masterpiece <3

All Too Well is one of the best written songs of all time and that's on that *.*

Favourite Song From A Musical

Cameron:

Well, I could be basic and pick With You from Ghost seeing as it was my favourite before the Simon Cowell heard it and made every reality tv contestant from the past 5 years sing it... (Sam Bailey's 'version...' LordT) So I tried to be a tad inspired for this one. My second favourite is actually Someone Like You from Jekyll & Hyde. This is actually something that I sang way back in high school for my Higher Music singing exam which I got an A in... (New Michelle McManus) I just love the lyrics and it has a key change and is a power ballad which is my thing as we all know. Also if you're listening to it, in singing exams in school you're only meant to sing a section of each song and one in full and the examiner cut me off at 2:26. I was FUMING

Jonjo:

I was gonna go for one that's been made into a movie or a movie musical (like La La Land) but I opted for a traditional broadway musical number instead. 'It's Quiet Uptown' is taken from the show 'Hamilton', and I think it might be one of the most beautifully tragic songs, I have ever heard. Every time I listen to this, I tear up and cry. That's even without seeing the show. It's just so stunning and emotionally charged, there's simply no way you can get through this song without crying, imo. Also helps that they released a "mixtape" of their Hamilton songs where the idea was to get stars like Alicia Keys, Sia, Usher, Kelly C etc.. And turn them into radio hits. Kelly Clarkson got this very song. Yeah, R. I. P. ME.

---

UltraReputation:

I was going to go with a song from a proper musical (probably seasons of love from rent, defying gravity from wicked or on my own from les miserables) but I realised this is my last chance to include la pa land and I couldn't go through this advent calendar without including a song from one of my favourite films ever! City of stars is a fabulous song, I adore the dreamish production and Ryan & Emma's vocals go so well together! The lyrics are fab and there's a reason why rhisbwon an Oscar <3

Day #19...

A cover as good as the original

Cameron

Quite a controversial category here :o... I was originally going to go for Gabrielle Aplin's cover of The Power Of Love but I thought people might drag on here (idk) so I decided to go with one of my favourite songs which is Meatloaf and Marion Raven's cover of It's All Coming Back To Be Now (a song that was originally written for Meatloaf apparently!) Absolutly love this cover and since my mum is a massive Meatloaf fan I remember hearing it quite a few times when she played Meatloafs CD's on her CD player . I feel the song is so much better as a duet and adore the blend of their vocals. Massive honourable mention to Mandy Moore's cover of Only Hope. The song was recorded for A Walk To Remember and is a cover of Switchfoot.

Jonjo

I have obviously chosen this. I love a good female vocal. I love ballads. I love the original to this (it's one of my all time faves, so this is a HUGE compliment). I love a good choir key change. Just everything about this version is a lesson in how you take the original and make it so different, that you literally cannot compare the two. Ever since her live lounge of this song, this has always been on notice. It was an incredibly smart move to record a studio version and release it in time for Christmas. So beautiful

UltraReputation

I wanted to go with a cover that I prefer to the original version so I was between this and Don't Stop Believing by Glee. I really dislike the 1975 but somebody else is their most beta blend song. However Verite's cover made me fall in love with the song as the pulsing poppish production gives this the boost it needs and reminds me a lot of talking body by tove lo! I love verite's voclss and this cover slays, so much so that I didn't even realise it was a cover when I first heard it

Day #20...

Favourite Studio Vocal

Cameron

So many tracks I could pick for this, but I had to go with one of my all-time favourite vocalists - Jojo! Obviously, her songs released as a teenager were incredible but I had to pick a song from the Tringle (?) of singles she released before her comeback album Mad Love. Say Love could very easily have been put there because her vocal runs are INSANE on the track, however, Save My Soul is where it's really at! What a vocal performance! So much power and emotion in her voice. It is truly spectacular *.*

Jonjo

I'm not actually sure what my favourite studio vocal is. But I think this is up there as one of them. Just because I think Justin utilises his voice the best in this song and you can tell just how much passion he's put into it. His performance at the BRITS 2013 is one of my fave vocal performances too. So flawless

UltraReputation

As with Jonjo, I'm also not sure what my favourite studio vocal is. So I'll go with the utter classic of Let It Go again as Idina's vocals on the track are completely flawless and that high note>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>everything else to ever exist. *.*

f*** you Sam, with ur Let It Go love

Day #21...

Favourite Album Of All Time

Cameron:

Oh shit, this is so difficult. I really have no idea what to put here because I could go for a classic or I could go for something newish which has floored me. I'm going to go for English Rain by, you guessed it, Gabrielle Aplin. What an emotional experience English Rain is. So much beautifully written songs with the most angelic vocals imaginable. Gabrielle picked the perfect set of singles from the album with Please Don't Say You Love Me being my absolute fav. Salvation, Home and Panic Chord are also 11/10 moments idec. November and How Do You Feel Today would be my next single picks with Human and Keep On Walking giving me warm feelings inside. If it wasn't just solely pop I would have considered Aquarius by Tinashe for this as it is literally debut album perfection. Tinashe deserves so much recognition (off Buzzjack) and I just hate that this album has been overlooked. Elina Born - Elina Born, Lauren Aquilina - Isn't It Strange, Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway and The Saturdays - On Your Radar are also honourable mentions.

---

Jonjo:

It's always a toss up between this album and Kelly's 'Breakaway' for me. But Kelly has had a lot of love in this countdown so I have chosen to represent 'Blackout'. One of the most influential pop albums this side of the millennium. Her pinnacle moment. I love how recording this album was essentially therapy for her during 2007. I might even go as far as saying it probably helped to save her life. That year was such a hard year for Brit fans. But she did it. She made it through the year and gave us her best album to date. Fantastic.

---

UltraReputation:

Oh shit, this is so difficult (x2). I have loads of favourite albums of all time but I always struggled choosing my ultimate favourite! So I've gone with probably my favourite album from my favourite singer, Taylor Swift! Speak Now is Swift's third album and its a modern masterpiece. The album is terrifically written (and every track is written solely by Taylor, a lyrical queen, and she was only 20 as well when this came out which is just crazy at how good of a songwriter she already was then *.*) and the production (by Nathan Chapman) also slays me. The singles from the album also slay; Mine is one of my favourite Taylor songs ever and is pop-country heaven, Back To December is gorgeous and heart-breaking and have some of Taylor's strongest lyrics, Mean is a pure-country BOP and again the lyrics slay, The Story of Us is a fab track and Sparks Fly also slays, especially the tour version <3 The album tracks are also such big highlights. From the beauty of Long Live (the lyrics are up there with Taylor's best) to violin-backed masterpiece Haunted to catty but fun Better Than Revenge, this album slays me. Though my favourite ofc is the six minute masterpiece 'Enchanted', which is possibly my favourite ever Taylor song let alone my highlight from Speak Now! The way the song builds is sfg, Taylor's vocals are incredible and the lyrics are just stunning. If only this album didn't have a certain song on it, this would have been such an easy decision for my favourite album of all time. My honorable mentions (in no order): Taylor Swift - 1989, Taylor Swift - Reputation, Lana Del Rey - Born To Die, Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence, Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway and Lily Allen - It's Not Me It's You are also honourable mentions (possibly Melodrama & Lust For Life as well but I think both are just a bit too new atm, and Frozen/La La Land if were counting movie soundtracks).

Save My Soul <3333333 Why was that not JoJo's proper comeback single and #1 for 12 1/2 weeks, that song alone was entirely worth the wait

"City Of Stars"

The one from only three UK Top 40 songs of 2017, which I like.

Other two are "Forgive Forget" and "Hard Times".

Never really got the massive love Blackout but ur runnerup Breakaway is amazing and one of Kelly's highlights
