  • So many songs I like from from 1985 just from looking at the top 10 singles of the year. Tarzan Boy is probably my favourite of the top 10 hits from the year!

Probably the multiple episodes a night they're showing rather than once a week. The U brand is all BBC owned anyway

Not that I've seen. It's also on at 9am too but it's the same episodes each day. 1999 is due to start imminently

I know the more modern version of On The Beach like most people, nice to see it on totp in its original form. Chris would be set to release Driving Home For Christmas again in December and again the following year and he was set to release his biggest album in 1989 'The Road To Hell'. He loves songs about driving!!

Who would have known that 'On The Beach' would be made into such a big party and dance anthem by a cover in the year 2000! I am looking forward to the brilliant York version once we reach that year, but Chris Rea's original On The Beach is a nice chill out track anyway with a great guitar riff.

Status Quo with the second renamed 'running' song after the rereleased 'Everybody Wants To Run The World' by Tears for Fears a few years previously.

Aztec Camera kind of were 'the new Spandau Ballet' at this time weren't they - 'Somewhere In My Heart' is very Spandau Ballet-esque, 'Working In A Goldmine' maybe a bit less so though. Both good songs anyway.

Yeh they are a bit although no bands in this era could remain huge and symbolise the era the way they and Duran Duran did in the 1989-85 period. We would have to wait until Stone Roses came in 1989 and basically kicked off imo the Brit pop era.

I have loved Level 42 over the past decade on totp, this is rockier number but they know how to produce a hook, one of the most underrated bands of the 80s. Next up some pure cheese from Julio & Stevie so no wonder it's a top 5 hit with those names.

What a song 'Teardrops' is by Womack x 2 - one of the hits of the year. Fantastic to see them live on totp.

We move onto a fantastic three breakers now with Guns & Roses biggest ever hit, a song that reminds me of Nuns of the Run by Yello and Miami Sound Machine - did they always start with Gloria's name?

Back to the studio and another decent act with Touchy by A-Ha - nothing on the first albums. Bomb The Bass bring the quality down significantly but I like the camera effects and enjoy the house DJ on stage. This is what the youth of 1988 loved.

And that's proven as House pop hit The Only Way Is Up becomes the years longest running no1 with a 5th week at the top spot! We end by going back to a simpler time in the early 80s with PHil Collins classic video for Groovy Kind Of Love, surely a future no1?!

Edited by Steve201

According to my book of hit singles, they were called Miami Sound Machine for their first two hits,Dr Beat (1984) and Bad Boy (1986). Anything For You is the first one with Gloria's name added on.

The Race by Yello is an 80s classic. I bought the album it was on,'Flag'.

Is it an old track remixed?

Gloria must have been becoming bigger by this stage!

Quite a long time since we have had Marc in the studio maybe 2-3 years and 8 years since his first performance. Back with this because it sounds quite nice and is charting. Next it's the video for the new Miami Sound Machine effort, pity they don't come into the studio like they did in 1984. They were pretty big by this stage though when it exactly near the studio.

Next we have Spagna back in the studio for the first time since her big summer smash a couple of years previous, this isn't anywhere near as catchy.

We have three breakers of which The Proclaimers are the pick and then ANOTHER video of the umpteenth single from the Bad album by MJ of which I can't remember even being released. But this was the highest NE at 16 on Name power alone no doubt, MJ was at the heights of his 80s pomp and the singles would keep coming into 1989 2 years since the album launch.

There must have been difficulty getting acts this week as we have another video next by The Yello - the Race is a cracker dance floor track though and pretty much a classic now.

I know now why there were so many videos - the BBC budget was used at getting PHil to perform his no1 - and it's another great song - think it's his final top seller though.

Finally we have the video for the brillant Rush Hour by Jane Wiedlin. I'm glad they made note that next week in the legend Peter Powells final hurrah. It'll be a teardroper of an episode. On that note how did Teardrops by Womack and co not get to the top spot?!

Edited by Steve201

Only caught the second one last night. The first Friday one clashes with Corrie!!

Afterwards there's a good 9 part-series running now about the history of country music. Two a week so 4 shown already.

Miami Sound Machine were in the studio last week with their next single so you'll see that when you catch up to November.

It's a sad show as Peter Powell presents for the final time after a decade on there and things have changed unimaginably in he studio, with the bands, the looks, the music, the commercialisation.

We start of underwhelmingly with Bros and their new single. Next is the fantastic classic Easy by The Commodores - does anyone know why it was rereleased?

At last a classic act and song with The Proclaimers in the studio performing their biggest hit and a song everyone nowadays knows the words to 'I'm Gonna Be'. Hope this climbs. We then continue the previous episode Love of videos with 3 unremarkable breakers and a Jason Donovan debut hit heavily influenced by SAW!

We get another classic now from a classic band The Hollies with He Ain't Heavy getting a hearing for a second generation with this rerelease in the top 10 and another version in the top 40 by Bill Medley. I've a feeling this song will be back in generations to come.

No1 for a Second week is Phil Collins.

We finish with a sad cake and confetti presentation for Peter in front of his colleagues including Phillip Scoffield, Caron Keating, Mike Read, Anthea Turner & Mark Goodier. Why did PHil never present totp?

And we finish with the classic house floor filler on video Inner City, even for 1988 and the house break throughs this sounds awfully futuristic and quintisentially 90s.

Steve, when you are posting a YouTube link you only need the code after the '=' sign to make the video appear so for example in your video for this post you just need the code:

Hope this helps!

oldies often became hits again following advert use in those days so Easy was prob featured in one - The Hollies certainly was - or else it was promoting a Hits package. (Checks google: yes it was a Halifax ad and it really doesnt seem like over 30 years ago!)

We start tonight with the wonderful Pet Shop Boys in the peak of their powers with a song the average punter might not know as well as their other hits but I frankly love it. There's a bit of Latino spirit to it like some other chart hits of the summer of 1988. Next we have Teardrops by Womack & Womack, easily my favourite song in the charts at the moment. This wonderful slice of disco funk is heard as much today still as a lot of other current hits. Easily their biggest hit ever.

Surprised to see Bill Withers in the studio to perform the brillant Lovely Day, although this Capitalesque remix sounds awful compared to the original and aul Bill looks out of place performing it like this. I think another poster said these songs charted because of ads etc.

Next we go through our 3 breakers by Transvision Vamp, the cheestastic Whitney US Olympic song & the decent comeback by Bon Jovi.

Next we have the brand new single from Rick Astley. The lead to his second album which wasn't as catchy as the iconic Never Gonna Give You Up but he wrote it himself. They did work them hard back then with Follow albums having to come straight after the debut, striking while the iron was hot I guess. We have a new No1 by a band that performed on the very first totp in 1964 hitting the top spot for The Hollies with He Ain't Heavy.

The show ends with the video of the Pasadenas.

We start with the cheestastic but gorgeous Sinitta but this one enters too low to look like getting a high peak. She will have to sit for a return in 1989 for one last decent era.

The fantastic U2 were next with the classic 'Desire'. Of course we just get to see the video to this as U2 were as Gary Davies states 'the biggest band in the world' at this stage Follow The Joshua Tree in 1987. They were regulars on totp even in the early days. Think they appeared less than a handful of times. The video to this will be hard to beat this episode though!

Hazel Dean returns to the studio with this SAW style continuing her mini revival in 1988, surprised she lasted so many eras.

Talking of more eras we see breakers for the Duran Duran boys - not sure if we see them in the studio by the later 80s but it would be nice. We also have the wonderful socially defining and biggest hit of their career for Erasure with A Littke Respect, I imagine this will go higher and we might even get a studio performance in a couple of weeks.

I'm getting used to being bombarded with videos on totp these days but to have a video after three breakers videos doesn't make sense. Even if it is the wonderful One Moment In Time by Whitney. Finally back to the studio again with the Bananrama girls getting their 16th hit in nearly 7 years. And The Hollies grab a second week at the top!

We finish with the video for T'Paus new single.
