December 2, 20204 yr Loved Lisa Stansfield and her sophisticated American-sounding brand of soul, very Barry White. But I was always amused when she was interviewed with her Rochdale accent and sounded so different. I'd pay to hear her doing All Around The World in Rochdale George Formby style... As his intro to the episode hints at Thatchers chancellor Nigel Lawson had just resigned from the cabinet to be replaced by John Major. Thankfully with hindsight we can look back and see this was the beginning of the end of her premiership, its been a long decade politically and on TOTP!! We start the show with a new entry at 32 for Electribe 101. This sounds like a decent electronic dance track with nice high pitched vocals. Its something that fits in perfectly with the charts at the time and so its no surprise to see it as a new entry in the top 40. Its has quite a strong resemblance to the Pet Shop Boys and its no surprise to discover that they were managed by the same manager Tom Watkins. The bands unique name comes from a Soviet refrigerator and the Roland SH-101 synthesizer, the band was composed of four electronic composers and producers from Birmingham (Brian Nordhoff, Joe Stevens, Les Fleming, and Roberto Cimarosti) and a female vocalist from Hamburg, Germany (Billie Ray Martin). Next up we have another new entry but this time by a more well known band The Eurythmics. This is the second single from the bands seventh studio album 'We Too Are One'. This is a lovely pop song from Stewart and Lennox about the end of a relationship and this album overall sees them returning to their mid 80s pop sound. The end of a relationship may be pointing towards their own band too! Now we have the rundown from 40-31 with new entries from Kaoma, And Why Not? and the Quireboys. Next we have another new entry from Linda Rondstat and Aaron Neville and as Nicky says its a live performance unusually for TOTP. The song is written by Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil and Tom Snow. The original version of this song was recorded by Barry Mann in 1980 and made famous by this duet. Previously in the early 80s Bill Medley and Bette Midler had minor success with it. The song was covered on Linda Ronstadt's album 'Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind'. It was introduced to Ronstadt and Neville by Steve Tyrell. This is absolutely class and cheesy but great at the same time, you can tell we are in the Christmas buildup with these type of singles. Next up we get the video preview of a new entry for a new American boyband called New Kids on the Block. This is the second single from the bands second album 'Hangin Tough'. The lead vocals are sang by Jordan Knight and Donnie Walhberg. This was the first of 10 top 40 singles in the UK for the band. Its a catchy pop number, not sure they'll come to much though.... Next up, another video by The Alarm and a male Voice Choir. This is the second single from The Alarms fourth album 'Change'. We get the breakers next with new videos from And Why Not and the Quireboys. The chart rundown follows from 30-11 with new entries from Janet Jackson, Eurythmics & New Kids On The Block. Following this we have another showing of the video from Mixmaster as Nicky describes him the Pete Waterman of Italy. Next up we have the brand new single by Janet Jackson and the whole dancing crew are in the studio with her for the choreographed performance. "Rhythm Nation" is released as the second single from her fourth studio album, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814. It was written and produced by Jackson, in collaboration with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Jackson developed the song's concept in response to various tragedies in the media, deciding to pursue a socially conscious theme by using a political standpoint within upbeat dance music. This sounds very typical late 80s US rnb/funk/pop and sounds quite dated now but at the time this was huge pop sounds. I'm really surprised TOTP got her in the studio for this - its been a good show for performances. We have the top 10 countdown next and finish the chart with the new sound at number one for the fantastic Lisa Stansfield and as Popchartfreak said above such great soulful American sounding pop from the girl from Rochdale. She deserves all the success she will get. Also, the quality of the number ones have taken a step back up after 3 weeks of the Jive Bunny. We finish the show with the video for the new single by The Wonder Stuff who were busy building their chart success at the time in order to get a big hit a few years from now as I learned from the 1991 rate they released Dizzy in the future, didn't actually know that so I am keeping an eye out for them when they appear on TOTP currently. Love everything about this the amazing xylophone solo and the melody is like nothing seen in the charts until this time, no wonder it entered so high. A hard performance to pull off on TOTPs studio as well. Next up we turn down the volume and chill out to the reggae-pop vibes of the new UB40 single 'Homely Girl' and its new video. Fairly standard UB40 this as they return to their early-80s roots in this track. 'Homely Girl' is the first single from UB40s 9th album 'Labour Of Love II. Its a cover (as was all the new album) of a 1974 single by American soul band the Chi-Lites. We have the first rundown of the chart next from 40-31 with new entries for The Cult, Prince & Sheena Easton and The Fine Young Cannibals. Next up in the studio we see the long awaited return of former Bronski Beat and The Communards lead singer Jimmy Sommerville to the TOTP studio for the first time in a couple of years this time with June Miles Kingston for company. And Jimmy hasn't lost his brilliant falsetto vocals. This performance is hilarious for so many reasons a French language song which is very cheesy and June didn't look comfortable at all on the stage beside jimmy with the adidas tracksuit bottoms and Mike Tyson shirt on :D The song does come to life half way through with a house breakdown added. Glad to see him back in the top 40. This was the first single from Somerville's debut solo album 'Read My Lips'. The song itself is translated in English as 'How To Say Goodbye To You' originally recorded in 1968 by Francois Hardy Next up there's the new novelty dance pop track of the moment the Lambada. Simon encourages us to do the moves, I'm not sure I'm ready though or that il ever be ready. Its a very well known track and a second hit in a row on TOTP in a foreign language. We check out the charts from 30-11 next with new entries by Inner City, 808 State and Iron Maiden. Next up in the studio we get a replay of the D Mob track for what I think is the third time....the performance last week only gained it one place chart wise so maybe they should promote another track. Its upward movement must have helped it seal the deal for another play. Inevitably next we get the video for the highest new entry from Iron Maiden with their 20th hit more than any other metal band according to Simon Mayo. 'Infinite Dreams' is a live single release from the band with the video recorded in Maidens Birmingham gig in 1988. We get two breakers next from Prince and another cut from the batman film this time with Sheena Easton and the new single from the Fine Young Cannibals which as ever if a fine song which has influences with Madchester style music. We get yet another video this time from a song that enters the top 3 after last weeks performances in the studio by Phil Collins. This time we get the harrowing video showing the plight of homelessness on the streets. The top 10 countdown is next and Britain's biggest selling single for a second week is by Rochdale's own Lisa Stanfield. Her second week at the top but she could be under threat next week by surges from Phil and New Kids On The Block. We will have to wait and see. We end the show with the new single by Inner City. This is a cover of the 1979 single by Stephanie Mills. This would go on to become the Detroit bands 5th top 20 hit in the UK showing dance bands could be taken seriously releasing a quality body of work. Edited December 5, 20204 yr by Christmasteve201
December 19, 20204 yr 1995 Christmas Special on BBC4 right now! Have this on video - my face year for music ever and some crackers on - full on Britpop and dance!
December 19, 20204 yr They had Mike Flowers Pops as Christmas Number 1! This must have been the pre-recorded version, as the version I have on video from Xmas day 95 rightly ends with Michael Jackson’s Earth Song.
December 19, 20204 yr I seen that but have it recorded - looking forward to watching it. Are they back in the original studio by 1995?
December 23, 20204 yr Top of the Pops 23/11/1989 presented by Jackie Brambles & Jenny Powell Big Fun Cant Shake The Feeling No27 Bobby Brown Roni(Video) No29 Fine Young Cannibals I'm Not The Man I Used To Be No21 zgVegyeAtfM Ben Liebrand Remix Eve Of The War(Video) No24 NE The Stone Roses Fools Gold No13 NE The Happy Mondays Hallelujah No30 k4H4ztXsPrc Nhmn28swB48 Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville Don't Know Much No3 ***No1 New Kids On The Block You Got It(The Right Stuff) (Video)***No1 1st Week 54,500 Prince & Sheena Easton The Arms Of Orion(Video) No31 tbIEwIwYz-c So we have the two ladies of TOTP presenting tonight and it ends up being one of THE greatest episodes in the history of the show with classic performances from Happy Monday and The Stones Roses on the same show and a first for both bands. This would symbolise the Madchester scene that would dominate the next 18 months and eventually lead to Brit pop which would define the 1990s. I'm not sure if they new how legendary it was at the time as they were two up and coming underground northern bands at this stage with The Stone Roses having a minor hit earlier in the year when their famous debut album was released in the Spring to little acclaim at the time. Firstly we need to get the nonsense out of the way with the return of cheesetastic 'Big Fun' in the studio with their new single. Strangely enough the crowd seem to love these guys more than the Roses later on the show, says a lot about how brainwashed the British public were with SAW style acts at this time, hopefully we are past dilution by this time. Big Fun really took the place of Bucks Fizz in the later years of the 80s, and sound like them only not as good quality and with a basic piano house beat in the background. Next up we have the video for the new single by US former New Edition bad boy Bobby Brown. He had a very successful 1988 and has been quiet enough this year but returns with this slower ballad style love song. Roni is a single released by American singer Bobby Brown, written by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, with additional lyrics written by The Deele member Darnell Bristol. It was released as the third single from Brown's second album Don't Be Cruel. Next up after talking about whether they fancy Bobby we get the countdown from 40-31 with new entries by Tears For Fears and Gloria Estefan. Following this we get the new single by the Fine Young Cannibals, this is one of the last hits for them and the fantastic bands - one of my own favourites of the mid-late 80s. This single is a more mid tempo style from them but the vocals by lead singer Roland Gift are as wonderful as ever. "I'm Not the Man I Used to Be" is released as the fourth single from the band's 1988 album The Raw & the Cooked. Next up something completely different with the video of the single from Ben Liebrand. I have heard this symphony before and as the title suggests seems to be a remix of a song by Jeff Wayne with house synths add and even a panpipe halfway through. Ben Liebrand is a Dutch dance music DJ and remixer. Next up Ian Brown miming one of the great guitar rift based songs of all time and dancing in the only way he knows how. What a song and finally they've built up a decent fanbase and radio have taken notice so they have a new entry as high as 13, not bad for a band on their second hit in those days!! "Fools Gold" became the band's biggest commercial hit at the time. It was their first single to reach the top ten of the UK Singles Chart and stayed in the top-75 for fourteen weeks, peaking at number eight. Fools Gold has been described as a Madchester, dance-rock, and funk rock song. The dance-oriented song showcased the rhythm section of Mani on bass and Reni on percussion. The distinctive drum groove was heavily inspired by Bobby Byrd's "Hot Pants (Bonus Beats)". It is not, however, a Byrd sample as many seem to think. John Squire also plays guitar with various wah-wah pedal effects. Ian Brown sings the vocals in a whispered delivery. He would also perform with this technique for the track "Something's Burning". The bassline was inspired by "Know How" by Young MC, which is a sample from the Shaft theme song, performed by Isaac Hayes. The lyrics reference Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" and Marquis de Sade. The verses were inspired by John Huston's 1948 film adaptation of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre Next up the charts from 30-11 with new entries from Happy Mondays, Morrissey & Bobby Brown. The second Manchester band tonight on show next and its The Happy Mondays with special guest Kirsty MacColl on vocals. Happy Mondays are an English rock band formed in Salford in 1980. The band's original line-up was Shaun Ryder (vocals), his brother Paul Ryder (bass), Mark Day (guitar), Paul Davis (keyboard), and Gary Whelan (drums). Mark "Bez" Berry later joined the band onstage as a dancer/percussionist. Rowetta joined the band as a vocalist in 1990. The group's work bridged the Manchester independent rock music of the 1980s and the emerging UK rave scene, drawing influence from funk, house, and psychedelia to pioneer the Madchester sound. They experienced their commercial peak with the releases Bummed (1988), Madchester Rave On (1989), and Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches (1990), with the last going platinum in the UK. They disbanded in 1993, and have reformed several times in subsequent decades. Now this is a hilarious performance of yet another classic Madchester anthem and Bez of future celebrity big brother fame 2 decades later just looks like he doesn't know what days it is as he shakes them maracas, he looks like he's getting ready for a jog!! Bit what a legendary moment and performance. Shaun Ryder simply having the time of his life!! 'Hallelujah' was a EP release and not from their main albums. After all that excitement we go back to basics with a stage love song performance by Linda and Aaron which is in the top 3 of the chart at this time and is actually a repeat performance from a few weeks ago, not many videos here this week which is excellent, must be getting close to Christmas. Next up we have a new number one from the new Kids On The Block with their debut hit 'The Right Stuff'. I like this effort for them and they would do well to keep boybands in the chart until Take That came along, but their fame would last only for 2 eras really. They really are a poor mans Back Street Boys. We end the show with the video by Prince and Sheena Easton with the third cut from Princes batman album which sees him dress up as The Joker himself with lovely vocals from Sheena Easton. A song that will be known by nearly everyone as its classic Latino pop. I've noticed TOTP using a lot more staged dancers in recent weeks but this song definitely calls for them, although I'm not sure this is a sign that Zoo are set to return with their early 80s OTT sets. Up next is Inner City's new track get another video showing, nowhere near as good as their previous hits in 1988 but this is more mid tempo soul than dance floor filler. Next up its the 40-31 countdown with new entries from Latino Rave, Dusty Springfield & Ron & Raz. Next in the studio 808 State enter the top 10 in the chart which they are rewarded with a second performance on the tops for this classic dancefloor filler 'Pacific-707', there's a lot of number in that band name and song title 1,515 to be exact. What else is there to say about this though, the Sax solo does it for me so chilled out and amazing and is still played in clubs every week. Next up is a video play of the catchy new Gloria Estefan single. Without the Sound machine she proves she can still make a dance floor filler and its not all love ballads. Really love her vocals on this, takes me away from the winter weather blues. This is the second single from the album Cuts Both Ways. Next in the studio we have a second performance of the part English part French single by former Bronski beat and Communard Jimmy Somerville. This is so bad its good in terms of catchiness. Not something I ever though Jimmy would release but he lives in berlin now, doesn't he. So maybe he was thinking about moving to Europe and getting up on his language skills. Still has that house break down through the song which sounds great as it is peculiar in this classic melody from earlier in the 20th century. With this second studio performance both singers seem a lot easier in their shoes performing with more confidence especially June. The second part of the top 40 countdown is next with 30-11 showing new entries for Kate Bush and big climbs for Gloria Estefan and Happy Mondays. Next up in the studio we have Rob 'N' Raz Featuring Leila K 'Got To Get' who have come from Sweden to promote this new entry dance pop filler. This vocal is a typical rap Neneh Cherry style of the era but the dance breakdown in between sounds pretty class and is really catchy. I like this and its the first time I've heard it before. Some bomber jacket from the main DJ too, the keyboard player also has pone of those 1990s caps on too, didn't realise they were big by this date. it was released as the lead single from their album, Rob'n'Raz featuring Leila K. The song became a big hit in Europe, reaching the top 10 in many countries, like in the UK, where the song peaked at number 8. Two breakers next from two huge artists first the highest new entry by Kate Bush for the classic 'This Woman's Work' and the second single from the 'Sowing The Seeds Of Love' album by Tears For Fears. "This Woman's Work" is a song written and performed by Kate Bush. It was originally featured on the soundtrack of the American film "She's Having a Baby" (1988),The lyric of "This Woman's Work" is about being forced to confront an unexpected and frightening crisis during the normal event of childbirth . The song was released as the second single from her album The Sensual World. Next up in the studio its legendary Tina with her new single. She seems to be promoting a lot in the UK in tis era as she's performed a couple of times in the past year and is set to perform in 1990 as well. This looks like it was filmed earlier the way Gary pointed into a direction behind the camera but who knows. As for the song its not one of her memorable hits but I have heard it before, a nice ballad. Apparently Tina was 50 at this stage, my god which means she's near 80 now, didn't realise that!! Next up its the top 10 selling singles with the number one for a second week New Kids On The Block with 67,000 sales, not exactly a stellar seller! We finish tonight with the video for the sound at number 6 by UB40. Another band from the early 80s still having hits but probably a little too late in their career to make a appearance on the show. The ska pop stars still releasing the reggae sound with this number "Homely Girl" is a 1974 single by The Chi-Lites which reached number 5 on the UK Singles Chart at the time. This was released from their 1989 album Labour of Love II, was released as a single on October 31 1989 and on a Lee Cooper Jeans ad. Great song though. December 24, 20204 yr Kate Bush is the highlight of a good period for pop music, This Woman's Work is powerful stuff. With Dusty on the way up being my other top fave. Tears For Fears and many more great tracks too though!
December 24, 20204 yr Great to see another Tears for Fears track in there as it makes me want to listen to the album as a whole again. Love the Mate Bush song too! New Kids are basically how the boyband had become commercialised by this era!
December 24, 20204 yr Woman In Chains is my favourite song by Tears For Fears with Oleta Adams and Phil Collins both making contributions. I like the 808 State instrumental a lot as well.
December 26, 20204 yr Loved Lisa Stansfield and her sophisticated American-sounding brand of soul, very Barry White. "oorghhhh Av bin arount world an ah cahnt fahrnd mi bearrrbe" Some people think I have an odd sense of humour for some reason... All Around The World is a really lovely song, sounds more early 90s than late 80s I think too. I get the Barry White comparison a bit there popchartfreak with the orchestral based instrumental. Edited December 26, 20204 yr by Road Salt Mixer

We start the show with the current Big Fun single which enters the top 10 with its dance routines and all. This is the second of 5 top 75 UK single for the group. Up next we get the full video of the new Kate Bush single, the second taken from 'The Sensual World'. Pity Kate didn't come into the studio to perform by this stage of her illustrious career as it would have done this fab single wonders, hopefully this will prop it up the top 30 soon. Great video too!! We have the 40-31 countdown next with new entries for Wet Wet Wet, Alexander O'Neil & Van Morrison & Cliff Richard. Next up we get the highest new entry straight in at number 5 for the new Soul II Soul single following up from their huge summertime number 1. They still don't like performing on TOTP due to the performance issues so the cool video will have to do. Not as instant as 'Back To Life' but nice all the same with more hip hop influences. I love how rap and hip hop have crept up on the mainstream through the decade of the 1980s and would become the dominant force in the next 10 years. Sydney Youngblood returns to the TOTP studio for the follow up single to his huge hit 'If Only I Could'. Again this isn't as instant as his opening hit which is a dance classic but I like the house influences and slower pace. Again TOTP producers have went back to the Hurll style dancers on the stage for some acts like in this performance, seems a bit cringey looking back, Zoo were long gone by this point and the audience was an after though for the most part except for the intros by the Radio 1 DJs. Before the next act Mark tells us about the new FM wave being opened this month and to check out Ceefax for more info on it, makes me feel very old. Anyway lets concentrate on the music and we have another viewing of the fab new Dusty Springfield AKA Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien track 'In Private'. Again this was produced by the Pet Shop Boys. She really is firing on all cylinders in this era with a handful of hits over the past 2 years propelling her back into the mainstream limelight for the first time in 2 decade. legends never fade for long. Both these 1989 single would be on her 1990 album release called 'Reputation'. We have the middle countdown of the chart from 30-11 now with new entries for Andy Stewart, Queen & Erasure. We follow this with another play of the Jeff Wayne remix that's in the top 3. Fantastic remix this and I am one who loves originals. Next up we have 3 breakers this week with Deep Heat 89 a mix of a lot of dance tunes which is poor but I'm sure it'll continue to climb. Next one of my favourite Queen singles 'The Miracle' with the fantastic video of young people taking the place of our favourite stars. Finally its the 3rd single of the year from Simple Minds following up from their huge number one in March. I hate the way they do this, we have 3 breaker videos and then another video introduced separately this time it makes up for it as its the fab new Erasure single 'You Surround Me'. This is the second single from the bands fourth studio album 'Wild'. We get another studio performance from Jason Donovan with his high New Entry at 7 for 'When You Come To Me'. This is the first single from Donovan's second album 'Between The Lines' and would go on to become one of his biggest selling singles. A lot of new entries this week. Jason must have been in the UK for the recording of the second Band Aid song which would have been videoed at this time. Highlight of the performance for me is that long red raincoat or Mack maybe it could be called, looks like Rodney out of Only Fools and Horses. Anyway chart wise Jason's new entries are lower with each release. Following the top 10 countdown we learn the new Kids boys are number one for a 3rd week, again on lowish sales for the time of year. Hope something can come and take their crown next week..... We end the week with the video for the new entry at 38 by Alexander O'Neil, his first hit in a while as he seemed to be huge in the mid-decade sort of time (1984-88). 'The Hit Mix' was a mega mix of O'Neil's hits so far. Edited December 28, 20204 yr by Christmasteve201

They performed a few weeks back as a new entry and are back to help get them into the top 10 in time for xmas. I liked the production then and like it more now, quite the beat. As I said a few weeks back this would help it peak at number 8 in the Uk, likely next week. Again the main DJ is loving the camera being in his face performing all kinds of aerobatics in the limelight. Next we have the new single by Madonna still debuting in the top 10 first week. This is quite a festive sounding number from Madge even if it isn't a Christmas song, the bells and sound make it that way, good choice to release it in December. Its actually one of her forgotten gems for me, forgot all about it until this show. A nice cartoon style video too. Next up the first part of the chart countdown with new entries from FPI Project, Sonia & Duran Duran. Next up in the studio we have a clear highlight of the show with two musical legends from the past 30 years Cliff and van performing in the studio. Nicky tells us this is Vans first ever top 40 hit and a quick check of polyhex confirms this is shockingly true, coming closest back in 1979 with 'Bright Side Of The Road' which reached number 63. This performance wonderfully shows off his vocal skills and shows why he's one of the biggest names in the business despite this. Nothing needs said about his vocal friend Cliff. Next up we have the video for 'Latino Rave' a mix of basically a load of old dance hits which are fairly modern as dance in its modern form has only been huge since 1986. Nice work out video though I guess. These type of cut and paste jobs annoy me though as they cut out a song I usually love just as it gets started. Next up the 30-11 countdown with new entries from Electrocnic and high climbs for Alexander O'Neal and Dusty Springfield. Next up in the studio its the return of Wet Wet Wet who were trying to make themselves the biggest band in the UK since breaking through in 1987. 'Broke Away' is the second single from the bands third studio album 'Holding back The River'. This is a fairly downbeat affair maybe channelling the fact it was a winter release but ended up only peaking at number 19 in a few weeks. We all know theres plenty more to come from these boys in the years ahead. From a band just at the peak of their powers to a lady who's been around in music business for 30 years former Boxtopper Tina Turner with arguably her biggest era so far with top 10 hit single 'I Don't Wanna Lose You', this week we get the video version. Next up we have a new band of legends including Johnny Marr from The Smiths, Neil Tennant from the Pet Shop Boys and New Orders Bernard Sumner. This single sounds like classic alternatibe dance and has many New order influences for me. Apparently the lyrics of the song are a parody of Marrs former bandmate in the Smiths Morrissey and his public sterotyping as morose and masochistic. This is a fantastic song and one Ive heard before but didn't realise who it was by, it also sounds like early britpop or similar to Happy Mondays or Stone Roses type material of the time. And for the third time this year Jive Bunny grabs the number one record with a brand new entry straight in at the top spot with a mix of Christmas classics this time (it was always going to work wasn't it). As Nicky says in his over exaggerated intro jive Bunny has now matched the record set by the Gerry and the Pacemakers and Frankie Goes To Hollywood by claiming number ones with their first three releases. Hes thankfully wrong to suggest they would dominate into the 90s and beyond as I'm pretty sure this is their last single - no wait just checked and they would pollute the chart with releases throughout 1990 and 1991 finally fading with diminishing returns. the albums would keep coming untikl the late 90s. Maybe Nicky was right!!!! This mix has Slade, Wizzard, Gary G******. Future editions of the song would have Mariah Carey and her hit 'All I Want For Christmas' replacing the latter. You can see why parents lapped the record up in December 1989, such a simple stocking filler for the kids of their most well known Christmas hits of the day. Its also a result of the cut and paste and sample phenomena in dance music which had become so huge in the late 80s. We end the show with the biggest climber up 18 places into the top 20 for Alexander O'Neal with the mix of his famous hits. Edited January 17, 20214 yr by steve201
January 3, 20214 yr As a fan of both New Order and the Pet Shop Boys, I welcomed the formation of Electronic and they went on to have several more top 40 hits. Dear Jessie is one of my favourite Madonna songs, I like the strings on it and now that you say it, it does sound quite Christmassy.
January 9, 20214 yr Yeh it was I forgot ‘Dead Jessie’ was a song of hers until hearing it on this episode, another good thing the repeats help with!
