On Channel 5 on Saturday 20th at 9pm is

Top of the Pops : Secrets and Scandals

Just watched this, some very poorly aged decisions that I didn’t know about before - like performing in a wheelchair frowned upon behind the scenes because it was a “family show” and a drummer who couldn’t perform being quietly replaced by someone in blackface 😶

(and all things Operation Yewtree obviously awful)

  • So many songs I like from from 1985 just from looking at the top 10 singles of the year. Tarzan Boy is probably my favourite of the top 10 hits from the year!

Probably the multiple episodes a night they're showing rather than once a week. The U brand is all BBC owned anyway

Not that I've seen. It's also on at 9am too but it's the same episodes each day. 1999 is due to start imminently

didnt watch it but it sounds like Robert Wyatt doing I'm A Believer, still remember that performance, what a hero. The blackface incident no idea about which band but if it was the 70's not at all surprising, we had the vile Black & White Minstrel Show still being shown then! Watch and let your jaw drop! I loathed that show right from being aware of issues, but with just 2 channels to watch they could have broadcast paint drying and it would got high ratings.... :o

Did people think that was racist then or did people just not think about it at the time?

An unspecified Top Of The Pops is currently listed as airing on BBC Two on Thursday at 10pm.

Oops sorry belated response - you're correct, it was that Robert Wyatt performance. The blackface incident was the drummer for an Ian Dury and the Blockheads performance. I've heard about those shows (I think from related albums charting or something) and they do sound dreadful in every way.

They didn't really comment on the impact at the time - it seemed like was done in an underhanded kind of way, towards the back of the stage - obviously terrible to look back on now.

Yeh just watched the documentary today there actually. Don’t get how people didn’t think the Black and White Minstrel show wasn’t racist but guess different times and all. The Ian Drury thing was wild like I’m sure if the guy who replaced the drummer just went on as himself only avid Blockheads would have noticed!

A couple of memorable studio appearances in 1994 - "Faster" by the Manics and Beck's "Loser". Which we may see when 1994 begins next year!

Supermodel Naomi Campbell was no stranger to music – in 1978 aged 8, she appeared in the video to Is This Love by Bob Marley – she has also appeared in music videos for George Michael ( Freedom 90) and Michael Jackson ( In The Closet ) and Madonna ( Erotica ).

Now in 1994 Naomi tried her hand at singing – Love And Kisses was the only top 40 hit for Naomi and this was her only top 40 week…..at number 40.

Your post looks very familiar Mack - I wonder where you got it from ?

Not a moment that Naomi would look back with joy with her attempt at pop stardom still she got a Top of the Pops appearance out of it and a #40 hit.

Scrolling the channels tonight I've discovered that U&Eden are about a year ahead of BBC Four but they show 3 episodes each night from 9pm. I'm watching an October '98 episode at the moment.

BBC Four are due to start 1998 in the next few weeks

Do they show any older series?
