Banning streaming playlists just because Kylie is flopping is one of the most extreme things I’ve ever read on here

To be quite fair, I had a rather negative perception of them before that anyway.

Haha. I just been there is a lot of manipulation as playlists get the passive listener who probably doesn't even know what they are listening to with some songs......

Even if they wanted to I don't think the occ can distinguish between active and passive streams from playlists, so banning playlist streams isn't realistic.
Will Post Malone end up Top 10 this week? Regardless, I don't think it'll hold up as well as 'rockstar'.

Well it was #4 yesterday and it's only gaining on Spotify so I'd say so. Probably won't make it to #1 or have 'rockstar' longevity though.

I don't really stream - but if I understand it correctly playlists are essentially a theme (music style, time eg current, 80s etc) and users select the theme they like and then listen to the songs already in it.

To me that's exactly the same as radio plays, you select a station based on the theme you like then listen to what is played. And with that logic I think airplay should also be incorporated with weightings based on number of listeners. It seems a bit fairer to me as it will capture a wider demographic and be more respresentative of what is popular now that sales isn't the sole measure.

Yep..that basically it is what they are doing in America...although I am not a fan of this passive system at all...still think streaming should be count when someone save a song on the library, because he is doing an ACTIVE action..same when you download from itunes or you buy a physical copy you are ACTIVELY doing that

You mean instead of incorporating streams from playlists or radio airplay -then yes it would make it more respresentative.

Any that 150:1 300:1 rule will surely go soon too.

I think ACR will be refined rather than taken away. It certainly needs looking at.

I don't think there's any indication of this? It's serving its purpose perfectly, creating more opportunities for fresher music to get top 40 exposure.

it should be 1:1000 for all.

Streaming should not dominate v a 99p download of a £3.99/£4.99 vinyl. Streamers need to be active in their approach not passive. Making your own playlists and adding deleting songs as you wish would make more sense

I’ve always been pro-radio tbh, like you said it opens up the charts to a wider demographic and could even lead to more rock/alternative artists entering the Top 40 who aren’t Liam or Noel Gallagher (I mean even the killers missed out on Top 40 with an amazing song, no doubt it would’ve been higher considering all the radio support The Man got).

It won't.

For every station that supports rock acts, there's at least 20 that play a non stop mix of chart hits and/or MOR. The only things airplay will do is get acts like P!nk and Paloma Faith higher chart positions from all the Heart FM and Radio 2 airplay, and keep the long running hits around even longer (Reggaeton Lento is still as high as #21 on airplay), judging by this week's airplay chart.

I can't stress enough that including airplay will mean the death of the singles chart as we know it.

and where are you getting 1:1000 from? The OCC have figured that 100 streams generates around the same revenue as a 99p download. They even lowered the ratio to 1:150 to give the sale more impact in the chart and that's before the whole ACR business.

on another point, the chart should be based on revenue from the public (i.e. no airplay) in my opinion, you are right that a £3.99 vinyl should be worth more than 150 streams, but vinyl sales for singles are so insignificant now that the OCC don't really need to worry about that problem.

'streamers need to be active not passive', that is just an opinion. a lot of people are just happy to stick on a playlist and only skip if they dislike the song (or even sit through songs they dislike), this is the way music consumption is heading. if you want to make your own playlists that is your own choice, I do this too but the casual Spotify user isn't into music as much as people on a chart music discussion forum.

But the chart should be reflecting popularity, the purpose isn't to reflect fresh music. There are other ways to do that.

Baesd on that occ should not exist anymore because once itunes will be gone singles chart will be just a rip off of the streaming chart that are based on playlists

E.g. Movies...also there is a chart..that is based on how much money it got in a week (that means how many people went to the cinema to see that movie) and not based on how much that movie was promoted

It's already dead :-(

plus, a lot of people listen to playlists but doesn't mean we click on song 1 and finish at the last song,

people are not retarded and skip songs if they don't like or just select the random ones they wanna listen within the list

Keep in mind, it registers as a stream after 30 seconds. I myself have accidentally 'streamed' songs I hate that way quite a few times.
