February 27, 20188 yr It takes you over 30 seconds to realise that the song you are listening to is, in fact, a song you hate? ;) Well sometimes you could be preoccupied by doing other things that you may not realise within 30 seconds... like putting clothes away, messaging a friend, reading a news article. It's easily done.
February 27, 20188 yr same here, lots of times I've accidentally streamed songs that I hate cos I was too late too skip, like failing to skip matt terry's song, always placed in the hot hits playlist also spotify has this feature that when you finish streaming an album/playlist, it starts randomly playing songs for you, many times it played me james arthur or taylor swift for instance and I always realise too late ;)
February 27, 20188 yr Author The 30 second rule is something I disagree with too, but there's nothing the OCC can do about it, that's an issue with the streaming services. Should really be half a song or 90 seconds, whichever is shorter. You can actually turn off the autoplay feature if you want, by the way.
February 27, 20188 yr I do think most people view music as a passive thing. They'll put a playlist on whilst they're making supper, or in the background during a party, and just let it run through. Whether it's Ed Sheeran or Rita Ora or Rihanna or Drake, it doesn't really make a difference - as long as it's vaguely contemporary sounding, and they've heard it on the radio a few times, they'll let it run. I think this notion that people actively "hate" lots of music is a misnomer. Obviously we're all a little obsessive about music on this board, and would fall into "active" users - curating our own playlists, actively seeking out smaller hits/lesser known artists to listen to. February 27, 20188 yr I think people are lazy and use playlists but they do skip songs otherwise matt terry would have been top 5 for 4 months in a row, considering how high he was on all playlists
February 27, 20188 yr Agreed plenty of times I listened to an album not realised it finished because it plays another song by the artist not meaning to stream it
February 27, 20188 yr I doubt much skipping happens on some playlists. like I say. last year kylie released a 9.99 12" vinyl and it sold great amounts. how can this be worth the same as 150 streams on Spotify that Is free.......

But then, is a load of fans buying a collectors edition really showing how popular that actual 'song' is? I mean it's all swings and roundabouts really.
February 27, 20188 yr Apologies if I've missed it (I've tried to read through the four pages of streaming discussion), but why are Bowie's albums back?
February 27, 20188 yr your kylie-obsession is blinding you ;) if people didn't skip, all songs in a playlist would have the same streams, and it's not the case I actually think it was a mistake changing the ratio to 150, should have remained at 100 cos thats the $$ it corresponds to Changing it to 150 was a silly attempt to save the itunes market, but itunes cannot be saved, no one is using it, a song being #100 at itunes barely sales 30 copies a day, why a chart should be based on what 30 peple buy, it's ridiculous, doen't represent music consumption at all The occ is a bit retrograde when it comes to changes, did the same 10 years ago trying to save CD singles and making up all kinds of stupid rules againts downloads
February 27, 20188 yr Tbf I think only paid for streams should count by that logic There must be a way to distriguish between a paid and free users streams That or only searched streams should count That and YouTube official / official lyric videos should also be counted for as they are no different and searched for Edited February 27, 20188 yr by 777666jason
February 27, 20188 yr That and YouTube official / official lyric videos should also be counted for as they are no different and searched for I'm of the opinion these should count. Radio, no!
February 27, 20188 yr your kylie-obsession is blinding you ;) if people didn't skip, all songs in a playlist would have the same streams, and it's not the case Of course people skip all kinds of songs but the streaming charts aren't just made from one playlist you know...
February 27, 20188 yr Why would you ever pay for Spotify? all you have to do is listen to a 30 second advert every 30 mins. Its a joke to be honest. I am not just talking as a Kylie fan, I am taking in general. look at all the music records being messed up. How can you have a 1,000,000 selling song just from streaming etc. doesn't sit right at all.
February 27, 20188 yr Of course people skip all kinds of songs but the streaming charts aren't just made from one playlist you know... Another thing to note is people don't necessarily play from song 1 to the last song, they may put it on shuffle. And another variable is that they may only listen to a few songs before stopping. So of course the figures aren't gonna be the same.

February 27, 20188 yr I pay for Spotify :P No adverts, unlimited skipping, ability to save songs I like to play offline and not murder my phones data. Maybe the argument that only the streams of Premium Spotify users count towards the chart could be made, as paying users have a lot more control over what they listen to and how often they listen to it

And another variable is that they may only listen to a few songs before stopping. So of course the figures aren't gonna be the same. Exactly and also might cherry pick which songs they want to listen to off a certain playlist. There's lots of factors. 90% of the songs on Hot Hits UK are in the top 200 though.
February 27, 20188 yr Kylie on New Music Friday and Hot Hits for 1 day .... gets 82,000 streams....... charted 77 on Spotify, taken off after just 1 day. and never got anywhere near top 200 or 20,000 streams since..... co-incidence? nope.
