Tryin' to keep control, pressure's takin' its toll

| 21 // Perfect Illusion // Joanne // 8.21

Just missing out on the all-important top 20, is the lead single from latest album Joanne. Perfect Illusion is the love child of Gaga and Ronson. It premiered on Radio 1 and is about the "highest of highs and lowest of lows" in a relationship, whilst also offering a commentary on social media. Speculation for it being about Gaga's ex Taylor were denied by Gaga but really it is multi layered in meaning so could still apply to it. The song is perhaps the most explosive Gaga has ever released - it's a relentless barrage of soaring vocals, intense beats and pulsating thumping sounds throughout. The music video is similarly as chaotic as Gaga raves in the desert being taken over by the ecstasy of the music that pours out of her. It didn't set the charts totally alight and it left many divided on opinions. The key change towards the end of the song offers a huge boost just as the song shows hints of dipping but many found it to be too repetitive for much replay-ability. Still, it's a bold single choice, unlike any she'd released before and while it didn't really set up the album that was to follow (sonically and lyrically) it certainly made the world aware that she was back, louder and prouder than ever.

Perfect Illusion is enjoyable! Exactly the type of lead single she *didn't* need really but I enjoy the song still.

That's why the lady is a tramp

| 06 // Born This Way: The Remix // 5.23

| 07 // The Remix // 5.02

| 08 // Cheek to Cheek // 4.01

A quick break from the singles to look at how you rated the albums :o And no shock for last place, with an abysmal average score it's her jazz album collaboration with Tony Bennett *_* After recording a rendition of The Lady Is a Tramp, the pair came together for Cheek to Cheek to inspire younger generation to experience the music, since they believed that these tracks had universal appeal... Universal away from Buzzjack I guess then ;o But despite the shade it gets on the internet, it did well with critics and commercially: the album won a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album and debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, and making Gaga the first female artist in the 2010 decade to have three number-one albums. Despite this, it's not really an album many of us return to but a lovely move from her to venture into music that she cared deeply about. Will we be here for Pt II?

Next out Gaga remixed her huge debut album with the aptly titled The Remix. Containing reworked versions of songs from The Fame and The Fame Monster, it was a must have package at the time and it became a huge success - it is currently the 5th best selling remix album of all time! Featuring work from Pet Shop Boys, Passion Pit and Marilyn Manson and it aimed to maintain Gaga's personality and vibe, while offering new vibes to each song. Gaga's second remix album Born This Way: The Remix came as part of a complete collection, featuring the title album, DVDs of her past tour and more. Unlike the remix album that came before it, this album did not achieve the same levels of success as many of the tracks had already been available on the single EPs. Featuring an all star cast with Foster the People, The Weeknd, Zedd, Hurts and more it's definitely a huge listen and it's just managed to sneak into the top 5 here~

Monster is such a fave of mine. It treads the line between the sounds of The Fame and The Fame Monster so perfectly, it would have made a perfect final single for the era.

Perfect Illusion still isn't a huge favourite of mine but I do enjoy it.

Come to me, in all your glamour and cruelty

| 05 // ARTPOP // 7.02

In fifth place it's the first proper solo studio album ARTPOP. The album was described as "a celebration and a poetic musical journey" and it deliberately breaks rules, throws out conventions and offers a more irresponsible and explosive side to the album that came before it. It was Gaga's way of hitting back at the world and all of its ills. Featuring production and work from DJ White Shadow, RedOne, Zedd and Madeon, the album is an exhausting experience that never slows down or stops for a breather. Returning to ideas of fame, bringing out sexual themes, motifs of drug use and celebrity culture, it lacks the fluid concept of the three projects that came before it and instead aims to explore a multitude of ideas. The album received mixed reviews; some hailed it as a bold, brave and brilliant move, while others did not understand the harsh sounds and abrasive tone it took. It was a commercial success although not really in comparison to everything Gaga had released before and it seems she herself doesn't reference it as much as everything else she has done, choosing to not sing any of its songs in her latest tour for example. The ArtRave tour accompanied the album and it was as colourful and loud and the album it aimed to support. It was yet another massive worldwide headlining tour and further cemented her as a #1 leading lady in the art of touring.

Can't wait to see you soar

| 04 // Joanne // 7.5

Next out it's Gaga's latest project Joanne. The album marks yet another transformation for the artist, this time into a country-infused more stripped back affair. Produced by Mark Ronson, Gaga herself and BloodPop the album focuses on Gaga's vocals and centres highly on family, emotions and more specifically, the death of her great-aunt. It was critically appreciated, Grammy nominated and commercially a success (Gaga's fourth US #1 album) and spawned a few singles throughout its era life. The album received another huge boost from Gaga's appearance at the Superbowl and it showed good longevity and warmed many fans' hearts with a side to Gaga many had never seen before. Throughout the album, it was clear that Gaga had a much cleaner state of mind, especially compared to the album that came before it. A timeless feel to it, with modern tints provided by Bloodpop it's a beautiful, complicated album and a very drastic change of pace. Who knows where she'll go next. Just remember don't call her Gaga. Call her Joanne xoxo

| 03 // The Fame // 7.70

Gaga's debut album comes in at #3. The Fame, quite simply, is one of the biggest debut eras of any artist ever. It was exciting, energetic, vibrant, pulsating and totally set the world alight and made it gaga. Through the help of RedOne and Fusari, the album is a trend-setting electropop, synth-pop, and dance-pop masterpiece that drawed on influences from the 1980s and set the tone for a lot of pop music in the years that would follow it. It talks of Gaga's love of fame while also exploring love, sex, money, drugs, sexual identity and so much more. It went on to become a critical success (nominated and winning Grammys), and a huge commercial success, selling millions upon millions across the globe and is currently ranked as the seventh best-selling digital album in history. Spawning gigantic singles (many of which are still to come in this countdown) and putting Gaga on the map in incredible fashion, it's rare to see a debut era being so all-encompassing as this. Gaga stated that the era was "it's a whole pop art movement" and for me, that's the perfect way of describing not only The Fame, but the birth of the Lady.
