You can chuck a fair few factors into it. X's music is very recent, so it'll naturally get more streams, and also his music is very laconic; "?" and "17" can be listened to back to back before you could get through 1 listen of Avicii's debut album. There's probably also the general factor that the people who have gone (not very far) back to his music probably already listened to it on Spotify, but you can't really count how many people are listening to recently deceased artists on iTunes or CDs or records.
avicii was super promoted but if you promote something outside the box for the general average spotify kid, sure you'll get streams, but not massive like if it were an urban artist
Hopefully he'll drop like a stone tomorrow. I don't mind him getting a song or two in the Top 40 as a sort of tribute but after what he did he shouldn't be a Top 10 contender.
SAD! is still on ACR this week so only half it's streams will count. FYI.

But with it almost doubling CB on streams it could help a lot

People are vile celebrating him like that.

You can celebrate person music without celebrating the person

I think the problem is the general public aviccii was huge when he died and all his track were recent bit mostly high sales streams already

The general public probably don't realise xxx past and just see him as a young rapper who died to young and since most of his music hasn't charted highly people are only discovering it for the first time not knowing his past

To me I agree how can people support him if they know but still 20 is young waste of a life too no matter how unforgivable his crimes I wouldn't wish death on someone but I will not be supporting his music either

To answer an earlier question. Avicii had his playlist on the front page of Spotify. X did not probably due to both X's controversial past and the controversy of Spotify having publicly banned his music from their playlists just weeks before (though they did turn back on that policy)

but I think avicii's songs did well after his death

it was far worst when George Michael died, there was barely an effect, for one of supposed most beloved uk artists ever, the highest it got on itunes was a song re-entering at #10 for a few hours and barely nothing happened on spotify

Yeah, X died at the peak of his career. I read someone suggest he's the biggest musician death since The Notorious B.I.G. in terms of current popularity, and I can't think of anyone to refute that with. (Maybe Avicii in parts of Europe, but I don't think his playlist-friendly hits have inspired the same level of devotion, or helped people with their struggles, in the way XXXTENTACION's music has.)

I think with George Michael his death was unfortunate enough to coincidence with the gift card effect and then his fan base would most likely already have owned his albums and the casual fans more likely to buy his greatest hits than stream or download individual songs.

Him and X cater to totally different markets generally speaking. So their death effects can't really be compared.

But George Michael didn't die before/at the peak of his popularity; before he'd even had the chance to write the classics that the public know, loved and celebrated at the time. Let's face it- he hadn't had a Top 10 hit for over 12 years! It isn't that much of a surprise really when you consider the music that XXXTENTACION was putting out appeals strongly to the demographic that use and interact with Spotify the most.

i know, just saying that it sad how things are these days and that a legend dies and theres zero effect

but a kid with barely zero accomplishments gets 700k just cos he's urban :/

It's not really just a genre thing but demographics. After all, Phife Dawg & Prodigy are both hip hop icons who passed away in recent years, but their heyday was some 20-25 years prior, so most of the people reading this thread won't even know what groups they were in, and unsurprisingly, I don't recall any major Spotify bump when they did die.

Also worth noting that X has nine songs out of the US Spotify top ten, streaming figures for 'SAD!' are insane (4,437,612). Top 3 are over 3 million streams and top 6 over 2 million.

Worldwide he holds the entire top 7 and 'SAD!' has 10,415,088 streams.
