May 4, 20187 yr Author It feels like the country wants to keep the Tories going, because they are more scared of the spectre of Corbyn than the completely realistic and present screwups of the current government. I don't think Brexit has had much of a hand in these results, other than destroying UKIP for now (who may reemerge in some form if Hard Brexit isn't adhered to). At least there's a slight swing towards the LDs country-wide but there's really not much of a change in these locals, which is really strange given the turmoil the country's in. It really wan't a surprise to me - UKIP served their purpose, so it's hardly unexpected that they are disappearing - and even back in 1983, a hard-left Labour did not appeal to the electorate.
May 4, 20187 yr Except these are the best ever Labour locals in England um ever? Nearly 70% agree with left Labor policies like nationalisation, a % that should have been needed for Brexit? Mainstream media spin is Tory media spin.
May 4, 20187 yr I didn't vote in this election (wasn't at home and I don't really care enough about local elections to faff about with organising a postal vote), couldn't have made a difference but my local ward flipped from Lib Dem (one of only two in Reading, curiously) to the Tories. Arse. x Reading as a whole remains controlled by Labour though. Imagine being the former Labour leader of Derby council... losing his seat to UKIP!! (Wtf are Derby doing in general) UKIP Derby poster from this year: This might have helped them out. x Edited May 4, 20187 yr by Harve
May 4, 20187 yr One of the classic frying pan black arse political moments today.... "Esther Webber @estwebber Theresa May in Barnet: "People of all faiths have rejected vile anti-Semitism which has gone unchallenged in Labour Party for too long" Jonn Elledge @JonnElledge Without underplaying the anti-Semitism charge, that's quite the brass neck from a woman whose immigration policies are so racist that we ended up deporting British citizens who happen to be black."
May 4, 20187 yr Imagine being the former Labour leader of Derby council... losing his seat to UKIP!! (Wtf are Derby doing in general) Speaking as someone born down the road... guessing its because neither tory nor labour have been as anti immigrant as theyd hoped theyd be....
May 4, 20187 yr Another example of sloppy BBC journalism (or blatant bias). Tow different Tories went on the results programme and claimed that Labour lost 4.000 seats in the elections held eight years into their term of office. This claim should have aroused suspicions. Even if it was let go the first time, somebody should have checked it just in case they tried it on again. First, it would have been impossible for Labour to lose 4,000 seats as only about 2,500 were up for grabs. Their actual number of losses was just over 100. BBC journalists just don't seem to be at all well-briefed these days.
May 4, 20187 yr Seriously guys how fucked are we if Labour eye up the Tories' 70% Leave-voting base and decide that they should outBrexit them to win a majority.
May 4, 20187 yr Because labour need to win seats in Derby Nuneaton and the midlands were small towns decimated by free market economics of th past 35 years have lead to huge Leave majorities!!

Make all the claims you like - but votes in ballot boxes are what matters at the end of the day... The projected national vote share is here : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43992681 Lab 35%, Con 35%, LD 16%, Other 14% Edited May 5, 20187 yr by vidcapper
May 5, 20187 yr Except the projected share gives Labour the most seats, leaves Torykip unable to form a government AND you can't extrapolate based on these results anyway, sorry BBTory, due to UKIP only having 1.8% national vote in the GE. Oops x So the Tory vote won't hoover it up as much. Next government: Labour and SNP. Chance of pure Labour too. You heard it here first. Nationalised industries. Finally!! Goodbye, Virgin Rail and Virgin Care. Just piss off thanks.

Actually I didn't - I heard it *here* first... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-56...lition-SNP.html Labour MPs could oust Tories and form a government in coalition with SNP if local election results were replicated in a general election, says BBC poll expert John Curtice Lib Dems would not have sufficient seats to take Conservative or Labour past the 326 mark Only group are the Scottish National Party who would have exactly the 43 seats that Labour need Added that 'people talk through the scenarios of what might happen in the coming weeks and months' ************************** At least I know *you* didn't get it from there, as you wouldn't touch the Mail with a bargepole.
May 5, 20187 yr Oh. I am aligned with the Daily Mail. I'm not sure how I feel aboot that. When did they write that?

May 5, 20187 yr Because labour need to win seats in Derby Nuneaton and the midlands were small towns decimated by free market economics of th past 35 years have lead to huge Leave majorities!! More specifically decimation of the mining industry followed by competition for jobs from the Polish - given a choice of hiring well-educated single young reliable Polish workers who will accept a lower wage, or partly-educated council-estate young-family-members who need a higher wage to support kids acquired at a young age employers seem to have gone for the cheaper option and many moan about it locally... Just my theory that, nothing to back it up other than observation....

Goodbye, Virgin Rail and Virgin Care. Just piss off thanks. SKY were quoting a Tory lead in a hung parliament and an increased Libdem presence, meaning Labour/Libdem/SNP could overhaul the Tories majority. So I guess nobody knows then, as in it's so close to call anything could happen so no party would be prepared to call for another election so soon after a similar result. They'll wait for the Brexit f***-up/paradise-gained and then see what opinions look like afterwards...

May 6, 20187 yr i’ve found these local elections baffling; labour has failed because they couldn’t win the most monied of boroughs? labour couldn’t win ken/chels or westminster after the blair landslide so why would now be any different? labour had an incongrousely good 2014 local election cycle; given the divisive climate currently it’s incredible labour are able to make ANY inroads given the dreadful media attitude

Surely it's more about what they claimed they would achieve? If they talk up the possibilities, then fall short, it makes them look as if they have 'failed'.
May 6, 20187 yr On a happy note my friend has become a Labour Councillor in North London. I have already formally written and requested he try to pursue a policy on compulsory ESC voting. Surely there could be nothing more vital than that to bringing communities together.....!
May 6, 20187 yr If we can all stay away from personal attacks on other members of this forum, and on misogynist remarks, that would be most appreciated.
