Thank you for this explanation someone else explained some of these reasons too but I felt like it wasn’t complete until you mentioned release dates I feel like this may have been what I was looking for, do you happen to know what day they were released on before may 1995 (singles, that is)
It was mainly a Monday but until 1995 not all record shops actually had new releases in stock to sell on a Monday. A release date at one time simply meant the date a record was sent from the pressing plant to record shops. When new releases arrived shops would often sell them straight away. During the 1980s most labels moved to releasing singles earlier in the week until a Monday release date became the norm but not all stores would receive stock to actually sell on the Monday. In the early 90s attempts by labels to supply record shops with stock before a Monday sometimes led to some shops jumping the gun and selling stock the moment stock arrived. But from May 1995 shops and labels agreed that in return for shops getting stock prior to the Monday the shop would not sell the new release until the Monday. Shops that constantly broke the "embargo" or "street" date would be penalised by not getting stock in advance which would put them at a disadvantage if they had to wait for new releases to arrive. The May 1995 agreement was the point from which most number 1 singles entered the chart at the top.

And the following week it was indeed Girl Power as the Spice Girls entered at number 1 to take the Christmas number 1 with 'Goodbye', narrowly outselling 'Chocolate Salty Balls' by Chef, 380k to 373k.
