June 5, 20187 yr Author Just so you know, I gave RFC a 9.5. You've probs added it in the results, but I'm not there in the highest scorers, so just double checking :P Nice enough results on the whole so far though. No major losses/unexpected results tbh. Except maybe Shot At the Night going top 10! Yep I did count you in the results :P I think I just missed you out when looking for highest/lowest, but you're added now! I can't fault the Top 5 tbh, each song I gave an 10 too could easily have been an 11 instead of All These Things That I've Done. I wish I'd given more to Bones/Runaways now I've listened to them a few more times since the results started but as a whole I'm very happy with how these results have turned out so far :)
June 6, 20187 yr Author 5. Mr. Brightside - 8.79 Highest Score: Harry Ezra, Jonjo (11), gavindeejay, Steve201, Nick F1, Dircadirca, Riser, Dexton, Theo., Jade, SamJudd, Heezus Froot, Liam (10) Lowest Score: Dobbo (-1), Popchartfreak (7) UK Chart Peak: 10 US Chart Peak: 10 I think I can confidently say that Mr. Brightside is the most iconic The Killers song out there. It's one of the most well-known songs of the 21st century, and has even made history by so far spending 201 weeks within the UK Top 100 (not consecutively, as has been reported before for some reason). It also almost re-entered the Top 40 last year after their surprise appearance at Glastonbury. Mr. Brightside was the bands first ever recorded song for the demo released in 2002, but only achieved wide commerical success in 2004/05 after being re-released as a single. The upbeat rock feel of the song is contrasted by how the it is lyrically about Brandon's jealousy and paranoria during what he believes is a fleeting relationship. I've spent about half an hour trying to summarise this songs lyrics but there's so many different interpretations I've decided instead just to acknowledge it's rhyming dick joke.. "Now they're going to bed and my stomach is sick. And it's all in my head, but she's touching his dick Chest now, he takes off her dress now" Mr. Brightside won an MTV VMA in 2005 for Best New Artist in a Video and, more importantly, the legendary James Blunt has cited this as his all-time favourite song ;) It's worth noting that this song recieved the most 10's out of the whole rate and if not for Dobbo's - this would've been #2 :kink: Even if Dobbo's -1 had become an 11 for Mr. Brightside, the real #1 would stay the same... gGdGFtwCNBE Top 4 (Alphabetically) Human Read My Mind Somebody Told Me When You Were Young Edited June 6, 20187 yr by Dexton
June 6, 20187 yr 4 very strong and signature songs left remaining from them. I would think Read My Mind is out next, but it remains superb.
June 6, 20187 yr I didn't even chart Mr Brightside at the time, though I grew to like it - I just don't get the adoration for it at all though. It was All These Things That I've Done that did the trick for me - I bought the album in an Orlando record store (back when they actually existed in every mall and major road) and the cool dude on reception looked at it and said "good choice" and we had a chat about the band - this was ages before they took off in the States.
June 7, 20187 yr Mr Brightside, while it is a great song, now clearly their signature hit. I still feel its not there best single and is slightly overrated.
June 10, 20187 yr Author 4. Human - 9.12 Highest Score: gavindeejay, Steve201, Popchartfreak, Harry Ezra, Jonjo, Iz, pippa, Dexton, SamJudd, Dobbo, Heezus Froot (10), Riser (9.5) Lowest Score: jonny (4), j80(7) UK Chart Peak: 3 US Chart Peak: 32 The first single from Day & Age and, much like Mr. Brightside which we said goodbye to last, is one of their signature hits. The song divide the band (and fans) at first, being seen as a reaction to the negative criticism of Sam's Town when they didn't need to respond to the hate with such a poppy song. But it become a huge hit nonetheless and is obviously well regarded by fans, at least the fans on Buzzjack :kink: It's probably the least lyrically emotional song up here, with the hook "Are we human or are we dancer?" being inspired by a disparaging comment made by Hunter S. Thompson, who stated that America was "raising a generation of dancers". This line asks if we are really autonomous human beings or if we are puppets to things like Social Norms and the government. At heart, its a dance song where the band is simply having fun with a great guitar riff and some odd lyrics. RIZdjT1472Y
June 10, 20187 yr Omg yassss at that overrated horror crashing out in 5th. Come on somebody told me *.*
June 11, 20187 yr Author 3. Read My Mind - 9.26 Highest Score: Riser, jonny, Liam (11), Steve201, Nikc F1, Harry Ezra, Iz, dandy*, pippa, Dexton, Heezus Froot (10) Lowest Score: j80 (6), Popchartfreak (7) UK Chart Peak: 15 US Chart Peak: 62 Here we have the third single from the ever underrated Sam's Town (although it can't be as underrated as I thought, with 2 of 3 songs in the Top 3 being from it :o) Read My Mind released as a single in early 2007. To this day Brandon names this as the "best song [He's] ever written" and it's hard to argue otherwise, with it's lowest rates here being a 6 and 7 with every other person giving it an 8+. The song focuses on a breakup between a couple whilst also talking about nostalgia and hope (or lack thereof). At long of the song is referencing the past ("good ol' days," "teenage queen") and escaping into somewhere new, somewhere that's supposed to be better ("breakin' outta this two star town," "the promised land," "a world unseen"). He always wanted to make something big of himself and become successful, but feels that he has failed this and that is the reason why the girl wants to break up. She is feeling trapped and wants to escape their relationship as she feels she has outgrown him. The line "The teenage queen, the loaded gun" is an interesting contrast too. He describes her as a "teenage queen" which mkaes her life seem as if it's a fantasy where everything in her world is perfect. But then the "loaded gun" that is the same girl can be a reference to her sadness and pain within, saying that not everyone is what they seem on the outside. No matter how brilliant and glamorous someones life may appear from the outside, you never know how much pain they are truly in. Read My Mind is a deeply personal song from a deeply personal album, their most emotional output of them all I think - at least until Wonderful Wonderful last year. Unfortunately the video isn't as deep as the song itself, although does have some nice shots of Tokyo and Brandon's moustache :P zc8hbSM1zVo Edited June 11, 20187 yr by Dexton
June 11, 20187 yr Author The two remaining songs? When You Were Young vs. Somebody Told Me Predict now :o :o
June 11, 20187 yr Either of them would be an amazing winner but going to predict 'Somebody Told Me' as the champion!
June 12, 20187 yr As if MB was only 5th  Only on Buzzjack.... Read My Mind robbed too, I'd go for WWWY personally of those two but both are fab. Read My Mind is so stunning, I didn't expect it top 3 though so I'll take that anyway!! It really sounds like a timeless classic career defining record even though in terms of their career its overshadowed by others :(
June 13, 20187 yr Author I SAID HE DOESN'T LOOK A THING LIKE JESUS BUT HE TALKS LIKE A GENTLEMEN LIKE YOU IMAGINED 2. When You Were Young - 9.31 Highest Score: dandy*, Theo., (11), gavindeejay, Steve201, Chez Wombat, Harry Ezra, Jonjo, Dexton, Jade, Samjudd, Dobbo (10) Lowest Score: Dircadirca (7.5), Nick F1, Iz, Heezus Froot (8) UK Chart Peak: 2 US Chart Peak: 14 Aus Chart Peak: 10 NZ Chart Peak: 10 And in at #2 is the Guitar Hero classic When You Were Young. Lead single from Sam's Town and - to date - the bands highest charting single in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand! I would argue this is their most Bruce Springsteen-eqsue single too from a very Springsteen album. The song contemplates the difference between expectations and reality through a love affair between a girl and a gentleman who ‘doesn’t look a thing like Jesus’, using lots of Christian symbolism both in the song lyrics an especially in the music video. It's about a girl who, in her culture, has been taught to believe that the perfect man is Jesus. She wants to meet that perfect someone but instead meets another man who doesn’t look a thing like Jesus but talks like a gentlemen and treats her well. The original music video is mostly made up of flashbacks of a happily wedded couple and how they met, only for it to be cut short by the man being caught having an affair. The woman is hurt by this but they reconcile and all is well in the world. The alternate version, however, depicts the woman jumping off a cliff instead of reconciling with the husband and paints a much darker tone for the music video (as this final scene in their story is the first scene we see in the video). This won Best Video at the 2007 Q Awards (who) and was nominated for two Grammys in 2007, Best Rock Song andBest Short Form Music Video. I am a bit gutted this didn't make it to #1 but Somebody Told Me is a deserving winner and #2 is nothing to be scoffed at. ff0oWESdmH0 Or3GAT24tcA So that means... 1. Somebody Told Me - 9.56 Highest Score: gavindeejay, Nick F1, Dircadirca, Jade, SamJudd (11), Popchartfreak, Chez Wombat, Harry Ezra, dandy*, pippa, Riser, Dexton, Theo. (10) Lowest Score: Heezus Froot (7), Steve201, j80 (8) UK Chart Peak: 3 US Chart Peak: 51 Aus Chart Peak: 17 NZ Chart Peak: 13 Denmark Chart Peak: 6 I said I was gutted this beat WYWY but I'm listening to this now and god it so deserves to be here  Somebody Told Me was the second single from Hot Fuss (meaning Hot Fuss is Buzzjacks #1 The Killers album , which no one was questioning tbh). This song grew popular as, though it seems to be about a romantic encounter or possibly an ex of some sort, the whole thing was about the process of creating, writing, and designing a song, about how incredibly difficult it is, and then how (as the chorus says) it can still turn out to look like something else that was made first. Breaking my back just to know your name Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this gameHe's saying that he's spent 17 tracks (roughly an hour) trying to flirt with this girl but he's fed up with her playing hard to get. Somebody Told Me is also their 17th track recorded (including Hot Fuss tracks and demo's) and is annoyed at how hard it is to create a decent song. Well, somebody told me you had a boyfriend Who looked like a girlfriend That I had in February of last year It's not confidential, I've got potential Here he is saying that they like similar looking people, making him think that they fit together well and is trying to make it clear that they might be good together. Metaphorically, he's saying that this great song he believes he's just created sounds exactly like another song that has already been made. On the very very top of the surface this is also seen as an LGBTQ+ song (Pride spin-off is missing out x) - where the new girl has dated the same girl that the singer has dated previously. Or even about a trans guy - when the girl knew the singer she hadn't begun her transition to a man yet, and the singer doesn't know this. Interpret it as you like :P The song is generally about the difficulties with producing new, original music in a world dominated by the same sounds and structures. The music video is just 3 minutes and 21 seconds of the band playing the song in the desert. It was nominated at the 2005 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and also placed at #4 in Triple J's Hottest 100 of 2004 (Mr. Brightside #13 and Smile Like You Mean It #39 also made the list).
