Chart Commentary

 

 

With three chart toppers already this year, it's fair to say American boyband Why Don't We are one of, if not THE hottest new act around in my eyes. After a modest #40 debut for These Girls last year, follow-up single Trust Fund Baby became an instant top 10 hit, eventually going on to spend two weeks at the top (and also boosting These Girls to a top 10 re-entry). Each single since then has been a #1 (any songs charting in between are older tracks!), and new track 8 Letters is no different. It's the third single from their forthcoming debut album, also titled 8 Letters, following Hooked and Talk - both of which remain stable this week at their respective positions of #17 and #12. 8 Letters is this week's highest climber too, vaulting 14 places from its one-day debut of #15 last week. Additionally, it enters Why Don't We into an exclusive club - artists with four #1 singles within a calendar year. Only three artists achieved this previously - One Direction in 2012, Hunter Hayes in 2014 and The Vamps in 2017!

This week's highest new entry comes from Gryffin, an American DJ who scores his very first hit this week. Tie Me Down is his latest single, featuring the vocals of Elley Duhé, who charted herself for the first time four weeks ago with Zedd on Happy Now. Happy Now climbed to #1 in its second week (first full week), giving Elley her first #1, and it remains in this week's top 10, down two to #8.

Appearing in the top 10 for the first time in over 2 years, Conrad Sewell's Healing Hands finally climbs into the top tier. It was released as his comeback single alongside Come Clean, and both tracks immediately charted at #25 and #31 respectively upon release. Come Clean dropped straight out while Healing Hands spent only one more week in the top 40, until it re-entered at #20 last week. It now becomes his ninth top 10, a tally that includes two #1s - one of which, Hold Me Up, was my end-of-year #1 in 2015.

With two songs in the top 40 singles for the fourth week running, 15 year-old Australian singer Ruel climbs to #1 with his debut EP, Ready. Younger became a #2 hit last week, and drops to #4 now, while Dazed & Confused debuted at #4, currently up to #35 on its 11th week. Maty Noyes places an EP in the top 5 too, with Love Songs from a Lolita following its predecessor Noyes Complaint in debuting at #4.
