On This Day In HistorySharon Jones, the singer who spearheaded a soul revival movement with her band the Dap-Kings, died in a New York hospital after a battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 60. Despite her powerhouse voice, Jones failed to make a breakthrough for decades until a recording session led to a Dap-Kings album in 2002. The band later won a Grammy nomination and performed at Glastonbury.Other ResourcesOfficial Now Music Website

Andrew's ReviewNow That’s What I Call Music! 95 or Now 95 came out at the end of Autumn 2016 and was the final volume released that year. It contained 45 tracks with 6 UK #1 singles, already an improvement in both regards from its predecessor. Unfortunately, unlike its predecessor, it contained 3 tracks that did not chart, just as was the case on Now 93 from the same year. This volume was the first to feature music from Hailee Steinfeld, M.O, NEIKED, Anne-Marie (as a lead artist), JP Cooper (as a lead artist) and Niall Horan (as a solo artist).

The omissions from this era vary, with a few omitted from soundtracks such as Suicide Squad and Ghostbusters. Some names previously featured in the series who were overlooked included Katy Perry, Twenty One Pilots, Britney Spears, 5 Seconds Of Summer, Rihanna, Tove Lo, Robbie Williams and Cheat Codes.

Those whose only appearance in the series was on this album include MØ, Nevada, TIEKS, Digital Farm Animals (as a lead artist), Matoma (as a lead artist), Louisa Johnson (as a lead artist), James TW, offaiah and Christine And The Queens.

Artwork Rating: 6/10 Good

There was always something strangely familiar with this cover, and that would be because it’s basically the same setting, even the same angle, as the design for Now 89 from just two years previously. The starry skyline is the same, and the use of northern lights appears on both covers too. What makes this artwork different is the igloos and emperor penguins that feature. It’s certainly not the most striking design, but it is still a good effort nonetheless, despite not being a truly original design.

Disc 1 Favourite: Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie – Rockabye

A really great single by Clean Bandit, if not one of their best. It spent 9 week’s in total at #1 and clearly there were a lot of fans, including me who listened to it frequently. It is possible that this single put Anne-Marie on the radar of future dance producers such as Major Lazer, David Guetta, Marshmello and Snakehips (even though Rudimental had previously featured her). This song was an easy pick from this disc.

Disc 2 Favourite: Bob Marley & The Wailers feat. LVNDSCAPE & Boiler – Is This Love (Remix)

Just edging it above the rest on this disc for me is this reworking of a Bob Marley classic. It made it fresh and current and certainly very appealing to listen to and what a delight it was to see this peak so highly in the UK. It would be nice if other Bob Marley hits could be given this sort of treatment to reach out to newer, and younger audiences.

Disc 3 Tracklist:

(A concept of what a third disc might look like if other hits from the era were used)

1. Twenty One Pilots – Heathens 3:15 {5}

2. 5 Seconds Of Summer – Girls Talk Boys 3:36 {28}

3. Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa & Imagine Dragons feat. Logic, Ty Dolla $ign & X Ambassadors – Sucker For Pain 4:04 {11}

4. Fifth Harmony feat. Fetty Wap – All In My Head (Flex) 3:30 {25}

5. Britney Spears feat. G-Eazy – Make Me... 3:50 {42}

6. Tove Lo – Cool Girl 3:19 {46}

7. Katy Perry – Rise 3:23 {25}

8. The Black Eyed Peas feat. The World – #Wheresthelove 5:25 {47}

----------

Total time: 1:19:46

Overall Rating: 6/10 Good

I wouldn’t call this a stellar volume, but it’s an improvement on the previous volume. It wasn’t the best time for music in the charts, but on this volume there are the majority of hits from the time and it’s captured quite well. A few disappointing inclusions and omissions, but otherwise good.

Artwork: 7/10

Love the penguins but the artwork looks a bit cheap

Overall: 9/10

Similar to the last Now really with how much I loved this time for music. Most people don't regard 2016 as a particularly great year for music but there was a lot of variety as we were essentially between two huge music trends (Tropical 2015 & Latin 2017).

Heathens, Too Good, Fade, Kids, & especially Say It are again huge omissions for me. There's a lot of other missing songs I liked at the time although admittedly don't go back to that often

Another good NOW album

This wasn't the best time for chart music unfortunately! Here's my Top 5:-

1) Bob Marley & The Wailers feat. LVNDSCAPE & Boiler – Is This Love (Remix)

2) TIEKS feat. Dan Harkna – Sunshine

3) Calvin Harris – My Way

4) offaiah – Trouble

5) Sigma feat. Birdy – Find Me

I'm sure Clean Bandit would of made it if I wasn't still suffering the effects of it's overplay!
