I don't know what will be Xmas #1 this year but I'm fairly sure of some things that won't be - Westlife (sorry), the X-Factor winner, novelty records, anything subject to a 'make record X the Christmas number 1' campaign - all are too reliant on sales and won't get the streaming numbers that are required in 2018.

I can't really see anything currently in the top 40 being there either - Shallow will surely be on ACR by then; Jess Glynne's Thursday has upward momentum at the right time but has an outside chance at best; that's about it. I wouldn't be too surprised if one of the usual Xmas classics (Wham or Mariah) is in a position where it would have been #1 if on SCR, but on ACR they'll be top 10 at best.

Clean Bandit and Benny / Calvin are credible contenders, as is George Ezra (though if Hold My Girl is that popular, even as an 8-month old album cut you'd have expected it to have peaked higher than #81 so far). We'll obviously have a better idea in a few weeks, but even then I think it could be a 'surprise' release from an established, heavily streamed act, in the vein of Funky Friday or Eminem's River (last year's Xmas #2 on release).

Whilst it's less likely than before, I'd never rule out the X Factor winner. At least they are doing original songs now and if one year they get the right winner and the right song, get it on Spotify's playlists, and they're probably already well supported by Apple Music due to series tie-in with them, you never know, especially as sales in Christmas week aren't as high as they used to be.

I think Jessie J has an album of Christmas songs coming out. I doubt they’ll do well on the singles chart though!

With streaming now well established I wouldn't be surprised if it be something current in the chart already that's about to be released, maybe Benny & Calvin or Clean Bandit & Marina (I would love to see Marina getting her first #1 though) and Clean Bandit is the better track of the two, both acts have great tracks at present. And with office Xmas parties, might give those tracks a good boost. To be fair, the X Factor show has hardly had a decent winner in the past few years to get that #1. This years contenders don't look that good on paper bar a few like Shan, Shontelle, Dalton (maybe with the right sound). When you consider there is only 8 weeks away from Xmas.

Charity songs won't do anything now unless they have a groundbreaking news story, like the Grenfell incident.

Jessie's album is already out!

Has Jessie J finally given up on that non-Christmas album she was supposed to release then?

If she could give up on music entirely this year, that would be the greatest gift of all.

I don't think there's a contestant called Shontelle this year. :P

Jessie did release her regular album a few months, didn't she? that ROSE one

Jessie J released 'R.O.S.E' in the form of 4 EPs deliberately so that it wouldn't chart at an amusingly low position.

Her Christmas album is also out too but it is yet to chart.

What are we thinking then based on everything we know and how streaming works? I'm looking to beat the bookmakers and make some easy money!

Ariana is your best bet I think, she's still got a good streaming lead and she'll still be on SCR by Christmas.

I see she's also the bookies fave so not much money to be won on that.

The earliest she’ll be on ACR is 11th January 2019

RE: George Ezra. He's releasing a 7" picture disc of 'Hold My Girl' via his official site on 14th December - Christmas chart week - so I think it's obvious his team will be pushing towards a big promo campaign around or just before that time. Part of what sent 'Shotgun' to number one in the summer was a release of a 7" picture disc in the last week of June.

I’m away to put my money on Jess Glynne.

She’s getting put higher on spotify playlists and I can only assume she will have major promo for Thursday which is heartbreaking!

Jess Glynne is my thinking too as value for money, but when will ACR kick in? I agree I think she's going to get some pimping over Christmas, but just concerned about ACR.

The earliest ACR could kick in is week 10, which for Jess would be Christmas chart week, but I imagine the label will do all they can to avoid it (by giving her promo for a sales boost), so she should probably be safe.

Jess Glynne odds aren't that great really, particularly when Clean Bandit were like 25/1 only days before the important chart week started in 2016. That was - in hindsight - easy money...* : (

* Though the sudden The Dave Clark Five (Glad All Over) boost must have been pretty hairy for a while early in the week.
