Part of me thinks Kylie has well moved on from the Christmas album and is happy to just let it do its own thing. Santa Baby does give her a good chart presence so its no harm in giving the song a nudge but again Kylie might be thinking its done well and will keep selling by itself which i would also understand.

^^ I think it was a quick way to deliver an album to Parlophone to end her original album contract rather than having to do another studio album with them.

I wonder if she had saved a Christmas album release until the 2020s, whether she’d have got to #1 with it? Or at least well within the Top 10. These days it’s hard to imagine Kylie charting as low as #12 again with a new album, regardless of the album’s theme, because sales have become quite weak. She’d likely have to sell less than 5k in a week to chart outside of the Top 10.

Kylie Christmas sold 15,881 to peak at #12 in 2015, which was one of her lowest first week sales. At the time it wasn’t particularly uncommon for Christmas albums to not do that well in the UK (outside of Michael Buble) but in more recent years there’s been better outcomes (Gary Barlow got to #5 in 2021, 19,090 sales to peak there / #2 for Cliff Richard in 2021, 24,358 sales).

If they ever did another reissue for Kylie Christmas, for instance a 10th anniversary Snow Queen 2LP pressing (with different colour variants), coloured cassettes, 2CD (bonus disc of live audio from Royal Albert Hall) and a 2CD/DVD/Blu-Ray format including the RAH show)… I bet it would become a Top 10 album!

It would definitely be bigger now - also the vinyl boom was in its infancy back then hence the white pressing selling out almost immediately and changing hands for £200+ now, I’m not surprised it ‘underperformed’ though - it came off the back of one of her most unsuccessful and panned studio albums so interest was not at its peak in anything new from her.
It was quite unfortunate because this actually started out at #5 in the midweeks!

Ya it was annoying to see it miss the top 10 in the end, sales wise its there with her number 1s disco and golden but it didn't get the multi formats to boost it. It also came at a time when her popularity was dwindling which didn't help. In a way I'm glad it was released back then rather than now as creatively she is on the top of her game since joining BMG and a Christmas album for me would be a huge step backwards.

While I know that fan opinion soured on Kiss Me Once when it was apparent it wasn’t turning out to be a successful era (particularly here on BuzzJack x), at least it wasn’t panned by the critics, who held it in a similar regard to most of her albums!

72 - Disco (16 reviews) [12 positive, 4 mixed]

68 - Fever (15 reviews) [7 positive, 6 mixed, 2 negative]

67 - Aphrodite (21 reviews) [10 positive, 9 mixed]

66 - Kiss Me Once (19 reviews) [10 positive, 9 mixed]

65 - X (24 reviews) [13 positive, 11 mixed]

63 - Golden (10 reviews) [3 positive, 7 mixed]

62 - Body Language (17 reviews) [9 positive, 6 mixed, 2 negative]

55 - Kylie Christmas (7 reviews) [1 positive, 5 mixed, 1 negative]

It’ll be interesting to see where Tension lands. Popjustice forum members mostly seem to think that Disco is Kylie at her very worst, yet the critics collectively think it’s her best album from Fever onwards. :kink:

For me I was hopeful with Kiss me once based on hearing into the blue but on hearing the album I was like ok this will need a few more listens to click which sadly never happened. Disco on the otherhand was instant on first listen and it left me excited and playing the album over and over again as it was a real uplifting feel good album so im surprised some fans think its Kylie at her worst. My opinion on both remain the same.

I was never hugely excited about Kylie Christmas as Christmas albums aren't my thing but it ended up better than I expected, I don't love the album but I revisit a few tracks.

Body language was the only other Kylie album that left me disappointed as it just fell flat for me and I still feel the same.

All her other albums have some real highs that I still love and I'm hopeful very hopeful Tension will fit in this category.

I noticed Spotify have removed Kylie’s Santa Baby from Christmas Hits (the biggest Christmas playlist on Spotify) it’s been replaced by Madonna’s Santa Baby

I would expect a big drop in streams this year.

:drama:

It’s been in decline for a few years now as the US playlists have favoured the Eartha Kitt version (and now Madonna).

It’s had a good run I guess - let’s hope there’s some support for some of the other KC tracks.

I'm disappointed about that as it was good to see kylie back on the chart each year.

I think we’ll still see it appear as there are so many playlists but it might be at #88 rather than scaling new heights.

How bizarre! Madonna's version of that is practically unlistenable

Not that I'm fond of it much regardless, but in a year when Kylie's had so much more success than previously it seems odd.

Maybe Madge wants a slice of the Christmas pie.

Hopefully they will push one of the other Kylie Christmas tracks.

Christmas Isn't Christmas Till You Get Here needs its time!

I'm still waiting for an advert to pick that up, it's perfect for it.

Il take that, or ideally it can crawl into the top 75.

Ideally another kylie Christmas track would take it and like others said ideally Christmas Isn't Christmas Till You Get Here would get used on an add and take off but in reality it's unlikely.

It's strange in a year that has been kylies most successful in years is the year this happend to santa baby.
