how tf did i miss that chicane single?! yes yes yessss
he seemingly doesn't get much hype these days, his new album was quite easy to miss (and I presume you mean 'Nirvana' as that was the single, if you mean 'I Came Here For You' then that was only an album track).

he also had 'Gorecki' (cover of the Lamb song) which is really worth checking out if you haven't.

Fatum have seemingly been releasing since 2014 but only appeared on my radar this year when this featured on one of the ASOT compilations and subsequently became a minor chart hit... before it suddenly really hit me as a song and leapt into the top five and then #1 for 2 weeks, also becoming one of my (least successful) BJSC entries (of 2018). It's the second-highest proper instrumental track in the countdown which is also very impressive. It has a lot going for it in the production anyhow, from the intro which is one of the biggest sounding intros I've heard all year, to the energetic drop and a great middle section too to give a different melodic idea in-between two rather repetitive sections. Unfortunately one of their members died shortly after the release of this song but they're still going and have put out some more banging tunes so we may well hear from them again in the next EOY countdown.

#022. Disclosure ~ Ultimatum (feat. Fatoumata Diawara)

Commentary

After over a year of being on hiatus, Disclosure came back with this proper tune featuring Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara, which became the first ever #1 for Disclosure, and also the first and only hit ever to be sang in Wassolou. Surprisingly it did take them this long to get a #1 hit, and their two biggest hits both missed the top five, but big hype finally got them a #1 and it in fact became the year's longest running #1 though it's not close to being the biggest #1 of the year as it fell off fairly quickly afterwards. The song reminds me of just why I love Disclosure so much (they're my 3rd most-played act ever, though Drake would be ahead counting his numerous guest appearances) and I was so glad to hear this from them, and that they stayed true to their sound and didn't sell out for a Spotify hit. They are so unique and very much needed in the current dance music scene, hopefully an album is to come in 2019.

* It's not actually an instrumental, but I cannot find or work out the lyrics

Patrick Topping had one minor hit in this chart a few years ago and I hadn't really been following him since but then this came up and was an instant smash. Tech house isn't usually my thing but that kick and bassline are undeniable and the gospel sample really works with it too. It's far from boring as she really goes for it in the vocal and Patrick's production is really good, it's a real banger. Would've made the top 20 if it had those two weeks count for this year too.

Five BJSC entries of mine are in the top 20 this year, and one of them starts off the top 20. Super8 & Tab were a duo I'd heard of for a while (and they have been around for over a decade) but it wasn't until this song I really took notice. The album is fairly solid but this was by far the highlight, and still their only charting song so far. It's one of the more pop structured trance songs and I do seem to prefer those when they're done well. It does mean most of the song is dedicated to the vocal with fairly minimal production in the verses, but the vocal is great and we do get a substantial amount of the track for the buildup and drop, which really helps its replay value (it's likely to pass 100 plays by March if not earlier). It had a very impressive run, making #1 on its 19th week thus beating the record for most consecutive weeks in the chart before climbing to #1, and it's still in my top five this week so it is likely to make the Hottest 100 again for 2019. If this passed you by in BJSC it's well worth a listen if you like trance music.

We've got another BJSC entry here now, and this one actually finished top 10 in BJSC too. Andrew Rayel was another trance producer I started following semi-recently, though this became his first major hit here. It takes a similar approach to 'Burn' which this just finishes above due to its earlier release date with it being very melodic and vocal-focused, except it goes in fairly hard for the drop with all the big synths saved for it. We also get a classic 'washing machine spin cycle' build-up which seems to not happen in a lot of dance anymore because of how overused it was a few years ago, which was great to hear again. It's simply anthemic trance at its best, well worth a listen if you missed the BJSC it was in.

Two hip-hop entries make the Hottest 20 this year and this is the first of those (and also my overall favourite but with an incomplete chart run here). Juice WRLD was previously unheard of by almost everyone until this started taking off, and this was surprisingly good for me as I was expecting some basic trap song when this started climbing on Spotify. Juice has a really catchy hook and his pain of having lost in a relationship really comes across here, but the song wouldn't be what it is without the really good use of the sample (Sting seems to agree too as he took most of the royalties) and that bass! He hasn't been able to get any other songs in Thermo's hot hits so far, but as he's still rather popular in the US it can't be long before he does make another good song.

Commentary

Of course, it is Drake who has the year's highest hip-hop song in the Hottest 100, and he is here again after 'Nice For What' made #29. It was such a good year for Drake aside from him getting exposed for having a secret child which started with this massive hit, which for most of 2018 was the UK's YTD #1 before 'One Kiss' overtook at the last minute. The song is full of hooks and iconic lines and the beat is really well done, the video is one of the year's best too (though I don't pay too much attention to MVs, I enjoy the sentiment of this one), it just proves that Drake is still on top of the game and can give us a great tune. No other rapper has been quite as consistent as him this decade so it's no wonder that he's the biggest there is at the moment.

Commentary

All hope was seemingly lost for Rudimental as 'Sun Comes Up' was disappointing... and then this came along and also served as the long-awaited (if only by me) Jess Glynne comeback, which eventually did the unthinkable and beat 'Feel the Love' to become their biggest song yet (and just ahead of it to be my fave Rudimental song at the moment, however unpopular that opinion may be, and who knows how this well will age). It's a great nostalgic pop song, and it was also great to hear Macklemore on a good song again as it had been a good few years since he last charted here. Jess really goes for it in the chorus to make up for her being absent from the rest of the song, and Dan is a competent enough vocalist. It's a really good song and deserves more love on this forum than it got, but for now it seems to be a one-off as they're yet to follow it up successfully in the UK or in Thermo's hot hits.

Mowgli is actually a pretty good song, I feel like if I listened to it enough times I would be low-key obsessed.
Lucid Dreams slaying  Didn't realize it was a #1 for you too! I haven't heard anything else chart-worthy from Juice WRLD yet either oops, hopefully he didn't use all his creativity on one song.

What a nice example of progressive trance here. I tend to imagine how I would dance to Mowgli, if I listened to it on the floor haha :P
it's a great 'bedroom rave' song!

From your #40-#21 recap:

39 Post Malone ~ rockstar (feat. 21 Savage)

34 Rita Ora ~ Anywhere

31 Chicane ~ I Came Here For You (feat. Rosalee O'Connell)

30 Lucas & Steve and Brandy ~ I Could Be Wrong

29 Drake ~ Nice For What

28 Loud Luxury ~ Body (feat. brando)

Sorry, not many that I have heard from here. Great to see Post Malone, Rita Ora and Drake in there and also 'Body' by Loud Luxury. I need to listen to more from the Dance forum this year.

there's a lot of relatively unknown dance tracks here so don't worry about not knowing them! there's a lot of great dance releases these days that don't go near the chart.

a few Disclosure tracks making it in - YES. their singles this year were mostly very good so i'm looking forward to more next year
they are so so good! most of their singles were excellent last year (hopefully we don't have to wait for next year for more).

Great to see Super8 & Tab top twenty, it was fantastic to see that in BJSC too. Incredibly I think Burn is going to be higher in my EOY chart than in yours! :o
oh really :o I'm sure it did better in my chart though! :P was great to see you were such a fan anyhow.

Mowgli did take a few listens but it's such a tune! I've really liked most of Jess' output last year too, was great to see her get continued success into her 2nd era when other artists have fell flat before in that stage.

Lucid Dreams slaying  Didn't realize it was a #1 for you too! I haven't heard anything else chart-worthy from Juice WRLD yet either oops, hopefully he didn't use all his creativity on one song.
I really enjoy it yes, clearly don't follow your chart closely enough either cos I don't recall you liking it so much. His other songs seem to be underwhelming so far sadly.

Really like "Ultimatum", "God's Plan" and especially "These Days", all 3 are great songs!
there'll be more of those to come (and we will reach #1 before the end of January!)

thanks guys!

These Days and Lucid Dreams are my faves from #19 to 16.

On the other hand, I still say NO to Drake. Sorry.

I wonder if Promises is still to come? :P
