The Pogues and Leona suffers the fact that their Christmas songs are local UK hits...It would be different if they were US hits.. that translate on being at the bottom of the biggest and GLOBAL Christmas playlist "CHRISTMAS HITS"(guess lots of uk listeners played this playlist too) ...look where is Kelly and others in that playlist

The Pogues are Irish to be pedantic.

Still UK HIT

To Leona's credit, last year she got to #95 on the Global chart with ~55% of her streams coming from the UK. This year she made it to #55 on the Global chart with a little under 40% from the UK. The UK is a big enough market to have international influence in its own right, so maybe she could further establish in future years. Or it's a random fluke. Tune in 365 days from now and find out :P

Yes Kylie Minogue Santa Baby top 50 Globally for 2 days s brilliant for her. There is Eartha, Arianna and Michael Bublé versions also

She reached number 39 globally just yesterday and number 81 in US spotify with 1.1 million streams which is a first for her...

It was probably added to many US spotify playlists as the Santa Baby of choice...

Yeah, and playlists are generally how most hit songs that are confined to one market generally cross over to international audiences; it's seen that something is perceived well enough to combat its foreign unfamiliarity. It has to start off contrived but before you know it, it's seamlessly integrated as 'one of the hits'. This isn't 100% certainly what's happening here but it can't be ruled out.

The Waitresses not even in the top 100 is an utter disgrace! I've heard it non-stop on the radio!!!

They probably are top 100 in actuality as they have multiple versions!

Of course it's a shame they are not top 100 anyway, but they're only in some of the playlists and not on the biggest one.

WHY/HOW is Shotgun 6th?
EOY effect, plus Christmas taking away from the Hot Hits UK effect.

No doubt her duet with Calum Scott gave her higher visibility globally this year compared to last year too, it's still in the Canadian charts and creeps up in US iTunes every little while, and is still doing well overall on Spotify and iTunes across Europe/Asia.

The chart is made first and foremost for the music business though, and it's not helpful for new product to be overshadowed by Christmas songs - hence why they changed the rule in the first place.

Christmas songs are part of the music business as well. I'm pretty sure some label executives would be very happy with 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' finally becoming a #1. If the OCC didn't want it to be contending for #1 they could easily just ban the song from charting at all, I think this rule change was just to prevent a situation where the entire top 40 is decades old Christmas songs.

The Pogues are Irish to be pedantic.

If you want to truly be pedantic, only one member of The Pogues was actually from Ireland. They formed in London and Shane MacGowan is from Kent, he only lived in Ireland during his early childhood. Their music was very Irish but the band itself was British.

lol Pogues are a UK band, McGowan's family was Irish but he was born in the UK and the band formed in London

+ Kirsty MacColl was also British

This is exactly what I meant, it would be embarrassing for the industry hence why they've tried to change the rules so much on Xmas songs and generally!

Embarrassing for a classic song to hit #1.... like Three Lions did earlier this year?

There's nothing embarrassing about the world's most popular Christmas song finally making it to #1 in the chart week that includes Christmas Day. In fact, it's a MASSIVE achievement and goes to show just how impressive it is when the OCC have hindered it significantly.
