23 Benjamin Ingrosso - Dance You Off | 2-4-2-5-9-9-9-18-26-35-33-17-33-x (13 weeks)

This year's highest Eurovision-related track is from Sweden for the third year running. Frans finished 1st in my 2016 EOY with If I Were Sorry, while Melodifestivalen hopefuls FO&O came 7th last year with Gotta Thing About You. This year, while there's no Eurovision representation in my top 10 or even my top 20, Benjamin Ingrosso's official Swedish entrant finishes in a respectable 23rd place. Dance You Off was the latest in a line of Benjamin hits in my chart - it was his fifth top 10 hit, and the highest he'd reached since Fall in Love became his first and only chart-topper to date in 2016. Interestingly though, Dance You Off is Benjamin's longest running hit to date. 13 weeks top 40 towers over the next highest: 7 weeks, tied by Fall in Love and Good Lovin'. It got quite unlucky to peak at #2 behind two separate tracks - 5 Seconds of Summer's Want You Back (which is already out), then Why Don't We's Trust Fund Baby (still in). Nevertheless, I expect I'll be thinking of this as the definitive Benjy song for the forseeable. A funky, relevant pop song which channels Charlie Puth's Attention in the best possible way.

22 Liam Payne & Rita Ora - For You | 1-2-3-5-5-9-11-15-22-26-29-31-x (12 weeks)

The first huge exciting new release of 2018, For You kickstarted a mammoth year for Rita Ora. It came not long after her massive hit Anywhere, #3 in my EOY last year and a six-week #1 in my weekly chart. For You was the first of four #1s she achieved in 2018, raising her total to ten since 2012's How We Do (Party) first took her to the top. For You saw Rita team up with Liam Payne, of course best known for being in One Direction, and Liam scored his highest solo hit to date, outdoing #17 hit Strip That Down with his first solo chart-topper (after 11 with 1D). For You is a sublime pop track, with Rita rightfully leading the way. Her and Liam sound great together though and they have excellent chemistry, both effectively carrying the soaring production to make one of the classiest pop tracks of the year.

21 Ariana Grande - no tears left to cry | 1-2-4-8-11-16-21-24-34-40-x (10 weeks)

From one classy track to another, Ariana Grande's comeback was one of my most anticipated of 2018. Of course, all eyes were on her to see how she would comment on the Manchester attack in the first single from her fourth era. Would she pay tribute to the victims? The result, however, was more about moving on to the future than dwelling on the past. no tears left to cry saw Ariana picking herself back up after everything that had gone on, and while Manchester is still very much in the forefront of her mind (see the worker bee in the music video, a small yet beautiful touch), she's realising she needs to move on. It was the perfect sentiment, and the song itself was an instant hit with me. From the slick, sublime production to the incredible music video, the track blew me away on one listen and continues to do so every time I play it. One of the biggest triumphs of the year, undoubtedly, and a deserving #1 for her last year in my chart.

20 Cardi B, Bad Bunny & J Balvin - I Like It | 32-19-15-20-18-10-9-4-10-9-3-5-10-16-25-28-32-x (17 weeks)

One of the songs of the summer, Cardi B's I Like It proved to be a real slow burner in my chart. It debuted at #32 a little while after it came out as part of Cardi's Invasion of Privacy album, rising into the top 20 the week after and eventually becoming Cardi's first top 10 as a lead artist in its sixth week on the chart. It had one of the longest top 10 runs of the year, spending eight weeks in the top tier and peaking on its eleventh week in the top 40, eventually reaching #3. Cardi delivers some of her best and most quotable lyrics on this track, with the entire first verse being absolute fire. J Balvin provides a great guest verse, and I think the only slight down point is that Bad Bunny goes on for a little bit too long :') Otherwise, this was the track that really convinced me about Cardi's own material even if I quite liked the singles that came before.

19 Ruel - Younger | 6-6-2-4-5-7-12-11-17-23-29-35-x-29-32-x (14 non-consecutive weeks)

Every time I've mentioned Ruel in this countdown, I think I've commented on his maturity for a musician of his age (15 when this song came out). However, nothing exemplifies that more than Younger, the third single from his debut EP Ready. Ruel wrote the song about a lost friendship, and how friends can sometimes drift apart. It's something I'm sure everyone has experienced at some point, and it's told so brilliantly through the story of the song. The video is excellent, too, and quite possibly my favourite video of the year. Ruel plays both friends, one of whom goes down the wrong path and gets into trouble. It's a gorgeous package and surely an indicator of the bright future the Aussie star has going forward. And y'all let it DNQ in BJSC. I'm still not over it. It peaked at #2 in my chart, losing out to froy's sideswipe over the summer, but it easily became one of my defining summer hits and I still love it just as much now.

18 HRVY & Malu Trevejo - Hasta Luego | 4-1-2-7-12-15-20-21-31-38-x-39-39-x (12 non-consecutive weeks)

One of the most fun tracks in my entire countdown, British popstar HRVY decided to jump on the Latin bandwagon for Hasta Luego, the follow-up to moderate streaming hit Personal. He teamed up with Cuban-American social media star and singer Malu Trevejo for the track, and the result is an incredibly infectious bop that's just too catchy to deny. It stormed to a #4 debut in my chart with just a couple of days of impact, thanks to a midweek release, before climbing to become both HRVY and Malu's first #1 the following week. I've heard the track live three times now too - twice on HRVY's own tours and once when he supported The Vamps - and each time it was a crowd-pleaser and a great moment to be part of. HRVY's follow-ups have both reached the top 5, with no previous top 10 hits, and Malu even scored a top 10 of her own with Luna Llena off the back of this track, so it's certainly put both artists firmly on the map for me.

17 Diplo & Lil Xan - Color Blind | 6-4-6-14-19-23-22-22-30-36-38-38-15-24-35-x (15 weeks)

Now here's the song that kickstarted my love of one of the most slated rappers around. I found Diplo and Lil Xan's collaboration Color Blind on a Spotify playlist, I can't even remember which one, but I listened out of curiosity (having no real knowledge of who Lil Xan was) and thought it was kinda good. I relistened a few times and before I knew it, I was pretty obsessed. The production is less commercial than Diplo's usual tracks, but he manages to bring out a different side of Lil Xan that's much more radio friendly. His lyrics are generally decent and they make a surprisingly brilliant team on this track. Color Blind became both artists' first top 10 hits (excluding Diplo's three with Major Lazer), and later climbed to #4, notching up a very impressive 15 weeks in my top 40. It also holds the accolade of highest non-top 2 hit in my countdown, so a superb outcome for a track I only reasonably liked!

Nice to see 1999 so high - I wasn't really expecting to like it that much but it was one of my favourite songs in the Top 40 when it finally made it there!

Hasta Luego had me in two minds really, I think the song's quite good actually, but HRVY just annoys me a little :P
