6 Dua Lipa & BLACKPINK - Kiss and Make Up | 1-2-2-2-2-5-… (6+ weeks)

One of the more newer songs in my top 10, Dua Lipa's Kiss and Make Up was never even an actual single, but still managed to become her second #1 hit upon debut back in October. Just how, though? I only actually listened to the track in the first place thanks to our very own Rob (aka Robot/RobBob) suggesting it to me - I was planning to hold off until I received my copy of Dua's re-released album at Christmas before hearing the new songs! I'm so glad he made me listen though, because Kiss and Make Up absolutely blew me away with only one listen. It's pure pop from start to finish, expertly crafted with some catchy lyrics and excellent on-trend production. The chorus is the high point of the song too, as opposed to the post-chorus like many tracks these days, which was a huge selling point. BLACKPINK also bring a spot of brilliance with their parts, working so well alongside Dua, and their combined girl power sees them take the highest-placed female track in this year's EOY. It will always remind me of tube journeys, where I'd be too lazy to change the song and just keep this on repeat. Never once did it get old, and it still hasn't.

Its #1 debut saw Dua's first chart topper since Scared to Be Lonely at the start of 2017, over 18 months before, as well as being BLACKPINK's first #1. That also makes it the first #1 for any K-Pop artist, the previous high point being #9 for BTS' IDOL just a week before! It only spent one week at the top, dethroning froy's sideswipe after its third and final stint at the top, but held the #2 spot for four following weeks behind Matteo Markus Bok's In the Middle, matching the record for longest top 2 lockout, set by Lily Allen in 2013 with Hard Out Here and Somewhere Only We Know at #1 and #2 respectively for four consecutive weeks (Hard Out Here got a fifth week at the top too). It gives Dua her highest EOY position to date, beating Scared to Be Lonely's #10 position from last year, and BLACKPINK their first EOY position full stop. Interestingly, they join a group of artists whose only EOY appearance is thanks to one sole top 10 hit - joining Dante Klein (Let Me Hold You, with Cheat Codes, in 2016), and froy (sideswipe this year, still to come!), but expect that to possibly change in the future.

5 Why Don't We - Trust Fund Baby | 8-15-14-6-1-1-3-3-5-7-14-14-17-20-25-26-8-14-17-25-32-34-39-x-28-x (24 non-consecutive weeks)

The song that started everything off. I actually thought Why Don't We's Trust Fund Baby might make for more of an EOY #1 contender than this at one point last year, but it turned out that they bettered themselves twice (Hooked and 8 Letters still remain in) and two newer tracks overtook too, bumping Trust Fund Baby down to #5. Nevertheless, this was a defining moment in my Why Don't We stanning. I first heard Trust Fund Baby on its day of release, listening mostly out of curiosity after reasonably enjoying These Girls. I thought it was okay on one listen, but I ended up relistening and it made its way towards an #8 debut that week. Jump ahead three weeks, and it re-enters my top 10 at a new peak of #6. This period was when it was snowing, and I remember walking into school, in the snow, listening to Trust Fund Baby on repeat. It then leapt up to #1 the week after for two weeks, becoming their first #1 single. Little did I know just what it would be the start of, though.

Trust Fund Baby grabbed me with its plethora of hooks. There are so many catchy, quotable lyrics, and when you consider it's written by "music devils" Ed Sheeran and Steve Mac, that's just part of the package. The chorus is so infectious as the boys sing about wanting a girl who's beyond material objects and money. Zach and Jack lead the chorus, while Daniel is perhaps the most prominent voice on the track with verse 1 and the middle 8 adlibs. Corbyn has the most memorable section though, with his second verse and the high-pitched inflections at the end of each line. The music video is brilliant too, their most professional looking video to date, as shown by the fact it's their first major label single. All of this came together to make an absolute stormer of a pop track, and one that deserved way more commercial attention. Following the release of Trust Fund Baby, I bought a stupidly overpriced resale ticket for their London gig in May, and my love affair with a brand new boyband had officially started.

4 Why Don't We - 8 Letters | 15-1-2-2-3-2-2-5-7-13-16-14-11-16-20-25-34-… (17+ weeks)

And another one drops out! Why Don't We's fourth #1 of 2018 was the title track of their debut studio album, 8 Letters. It was released while I was on holiday, I remember my frantic and excitable conversations with our very own Sam over Facebook messenger when they started teasing a big announcement. When it turned out to be the album, we went crazy, especially as the pre-order came with this brand new instant grat, also to be the third single from it. 8 Letters made a good impact right away, a notably more mature and downbeat song than what had come before. Jack takes lead vocals on the chorus and the post-chorus, stealing the show with killer vocal moments that you didn't hear on the early EPs they released. Daniel's second verse and Zach's bridges are also highlights, but all five of them kill their parts, conveying the emotion absolutely brilliantly.

It was no shock that 8 Letters reached #1 in its first full week, dethroning froy's sideswipe (for the first time). It only spent one week at the top, with Noah Cyrus and Lil Xan's Live or Die dethroning it the week after, but it came so close to returning to the top spot on a later week - Avril Lavigne's midweek release of Head Above Water dashed its hopes! Nevertheless, 8 Letters' #1 status made Why Don't We record-holders, matching the record for most #1 hits achieved in a calendar year achieved by three previous artists, and a further two later in 2018. 8 Letters has also become a moderate radio hit in the US, it's a shame it's not blown up further but I'm glad there's some level of support for them. It bodes well for their future singles anyway!

3 Matteo Markus Bok - In the Middle | 1-1-1-1-3-… (5+ weeks)

Cody's not wrong - Matteo Markus Bok's In the Middle only came out at the very end of October 2018. That gave it roughly a month to impact before my EOY beckoned, which isn't long at all. However, this is the exact reason I don't use a points system. New songs wouldn't be represented well enough, and it would be unfair on a track I love as much as In the Middle for it *not* to feature as high as this. I try and judge every song as objectively as I can, no matter how recent it is, so this one really did work out, and two months after compiling this EOY, I have no regrets about placing this so high, especially when #3 last year was Anywhere by Rita Ora - a track that had been out for a similar period of time!

So let's flash back to when In the Middle came out. Matteo had not long since had his first #1 hit in my chart with El Ritmo (AHI AHI AHI), and began teasing new single In the Middle. I was pretty intrigued, he'd put out a couple of bops, maybe this was to be another one? I didn't quite expect it to be such an out-and-out banger though. From the sublime build in the production of the chorus towards the explosion halfway through, to Matteo's excellent vocals, the track really is an exceptionally well-crafted pop song. Ultimately, that's all I need to satisfy me. A strong melody, a strong hook, a great voice and some solid production, and it doesn't come together in a much better way than this.

The song debuted at #1 in my chart despite only being available on Spotify for its first week. To most people, this wouldn't make a difference, but I only use Spotify when I'm out and about. I prefer iTunes at home! This made it slightly awkward, but it didn't stop In the Middle's easy ride to #1. It stayed put for four weeks in total, making it the joint longest consecutive run at #1 this year (alongside Hooked, still to come), and trailing only the 5 non-consecutive weeks of sideswipe (also still to come x) overall. The track proved to me that Matteo's here to stay, and is one of the most underrated voices in pop music right now - says it all when I account for over half of his last.fm total plays

Glad you think so  thanks ElectroBoy!!

I expect Why Don't We will win then, with them having 4 songs in the top 10 (I didn't even stan Avicii that much!)

My fave from your top 10 would probably have to be 'Kiss and Make Up' although it's not one of my faves of hers. I had a listen of that Alec Benjamin song cause it was climbing Spotify too and I don't mind it actually. Still not keen on Why Don't We though. :P

Ha it's funny cause when The Vamps had three songs in my top 10, they placed at #5 (Wild Heart), #9 (Oh Cecilia) and #10 (Last Night), so that doesn't guarantee anything! All will be revealed very soon though *_*

Glad you're liking the Alec song, a lot of people seem to be really getting into it right now, I'm dying for it to take off now everything seems to be falling into place. Thanks very much!!!

2 froy - sideswipe | 1-1-2-4-5-7-1-3-8-9-1-1-3-6-10-15-18-19-... (18+ weeks)

Froy Gutierrez's music career had been a rather long time coming. He was teasing music from when I first heard of him, in around February 2017. I'd just finished watching Teen Wolf in its entirety, and after that, once I'd finally followed all of the cast on Twitter with no remaining spoiler risk, I found Froy, who had been cast in the final 10 episodes to air later that year. He mostly caught my eye cause he's a total cutie, but equally he seemed very enthusiastic about Teen Wolf. He was on my radar for the months that followed, until his Teen Wolf debut that July as Nolan Holloway. He played one of the most interesting and complex characters the show has seen, and was incredibly watchable even if he wasn't always on the right side. However, Teen Wolf came and went, and there was still little in the way of music beyond the announcement and tracklist of his debut EP, Midnight Minute.

Things finally started moving along in mid-2018. Froy began performing short gigs at Teen Wolf conventions he was attending, and confirmed that the Midnight Minute EP was no more. Instead, he started teasing sideswipe, his debut single, which finally arrived in July 2018. At first, I wasn't totally sure what to think. It's not a pure pop track, with some quite moody production against Froy's vocals, but it gels together really well to make a catchy yet standout pop track that's easy to put on repeat. The dripping effects add to the eerie feel of the production too.

Of course, the song debuted at #1 in my chart, holding off a host of new entries from Benjamin Ingrosso (I Wouldn't Know), Sigala & The Vamps (We Don't Care), Alvaro Soler (La Cintura), Alan Walker (Darkside) and DJ Khaled (No Brainer), all of which also joined Froy in that top 10. It spent two weeks at the top before Why Don't We's 8 Letters dethroned it, but reclimbed to #1 when it was announced that Froy was attending WereWolfCon in Brussels in October, which I was attending! It dethroned Matteo Markus Bok's El Ritmo (AHI AHI AHI) for that third week at the top.

A third and final stint at #1 came that October, as a result of WereWolfCon weekend. I've detailed my experience of meeting Froy already (it was incredible, he's the loveliest person in the whole world and I cherished every moment I spent with him), but sideswipe benefited from that hugely, as well as his concert the night before the convention began. It climbed 9-1, dethroning Casey Lowry's Me & You and blocking Charli XCX & Troye Sivan's 1999 for both weeks it spent at #1, bringing its total weeks at #1 to 5, the most of any song across 2018. It also spent an unbroken 15 weeks in my top 10, the most for any song in the whole year, and became the very first song to spend a week at EVERY position #1-10! sideswipe is a one-of-a-kind song, and when Froy releases his next track this month, he'll struggle to top this. That's okay though, because sideswipe will always remind me of one of the most incredible weeks of my life, and for that alone I'll cherish it forever.

1 Why Don't We - Hooked | 1-1-1-1-2-3-7-12-20-17-17-18-19-10-10-11-14-22-26-24-19-14-22-28-30-37-... (26+ weeks)

So here we are at last, my favourite song of the year, and I'm sure many of you saw it coming in the end. Why Don't We claim my favourite song of the year, meaning they've got a clean sweep across the board. They're my #1 song, album AND artist, marking the first time any artist has done this since The Vamps in 2014! Quite impressive considering it was only a year ago that I actually started paying attention to them at all. I learnt Jack's name quite quickly when discovering them (as he's my fave lol x), but I remember teaching myself Jonah, Daniel, Zach and Corbyn's names when Trust Fund Baby came out. They were making a big impact on me in a way that no boyband had since that very first Vamps era, and Trust Fund Baby really was just the start.

Hooked came along as a surprise release about a week and a half after I saw them live in May, so my Why Don't We hype was on full blast. Hooked blew me away from my very first listen though. The piano-backed chorus with Jack on lead vocals in the centre-piece of the whole song. He absolutely kills the vocal, proving why, beyond looks, he's my favourite member. The track continues with some more great moments, too. Each member gets a chance to shine - Daniel's "you held me high", Zach's excellent pre-chorus, Jonah's "crashed my car", and of course Corbyn's high note - a WTF moment at first, but it's very endearing.

Of course, the song debuted at #1 in my chart despite being released on a Thursday and my chart happening that same Friday. It spent four weeks at #1 in total, the joint most consecutive weeks of any song this year, and went on to spend 28 weeks in my top 40, the most of any song in the past two years. It held off new songs across those four weeks from Sabrina Carpenter, Tom Odell, Bebe Rexha, Troye Sivan and Cheat Codes & Little Mix, and dominated pretty much the rest of 2018. Though two further singles came from the debut Why Don't We album - Talk and the title track 8 Letters - Hooked is what held up the best in the end, and even returned to the top 10 when the album came out.

I heard the song live in October on their European tour, and it was a huge moment as the second-to-last song on the concert. The crowd went totally wild for it, and it was my highlight of the whole set. If anything sums up my year of Why Don't We stanning, it will always be this song. Arriving at just the right moment, and being a part of the Twitter stan community for this release too. I've made friends through my Why Don't We stanning, and it's exciting as their journey has just begun. I guess the only way to sum it up is by saying:

Damn, I'm hooked.
