Chart Commentary

 

 

Sticking at #1 for a second week, Matteo Markus Bok's Mrs Lonely becomes his second multi-week #1 out of his four chart-toppers to date. El Ritmo and Shallow only nabbed a single week each, while In the Middle held #1 for four weeks in total. Although Matteo has one less song in this week's top 10, down to three after This Christmas drops out, the mass exodus of Christmas hits has cleared the way for 16 new/re-entries, six of which belong to Matteo. El Ritmo and Just One Lie lead the way, re-entering for the first time each, while four other songs debut for the first time:

 

- E' diventata primavera is new at #34. This was Matteo's very first single and the only one to date in Matteo's native language of English.

- Miracle enters at #36. This was the b-side to Just One Lie, and also received a music video.

- Sunshower is the highest new song at #32. This was the follow-up to Just One Lie and Miracle.

- The Ischgl Feeling completes the set at #35. It came out at the start of 2018 as the official song for Ischgl, the Austrian ski resort.

This week's highest new entry comes from a team of artists all reaching a new personal best this week. The track is led by Norwegian DJ duo Davai, who have recruited Call Me Loop and Lisa Ajax to provide vocals on Cry Like Kim K, an ode to a famous Kim Kardashian meme. Call Me Loop also scores her first hit, while Lisa Ajax achieves her best to date, following up 2017's I Don't Give A, a #17 hit. Elsewhere in the chart, Rhea and Samuel Daayata score their first hits too, while James Arthur and Max & Harvey score a new personal best.

Swedish singer Andreas Wijk also makes his chart debut this week, although this is not the first I'd heard of him. I had heard his single FLAWS before and it came very close to entering my top 40 over the summer, thanks to our very own HarryEzra (who went on to enter it to BJSC). This week, I discovered Andreas had recently released his debut album, the brilliantly titled Season 1 [Episode 01-14], which debuts at #1 on my album chart this week. Latest single NuMb, complete with a ❄︎ emoji on the end of the title, makes the biggest impression, debuting at #3 and giving Andreas his first top 40 hit. Album track New²this is new at #37 too.

Finally climbing 9 spots into this week's top 10, Cardi B scores her sixth top 10 hit with Money following its huge video-fuelled re-entry. It's her second top 10 as a lead artist, joining I Like It, and fourth top 20 after Bartier Cardi and Ring throughout last year. Her highest charting track remains her #1 hit Girls with Rita Ora, as well as #2 feature on Jennifer Lopez's Dinero. It's Cardi's first hit without anybody alongside her since Bodak Yellow peaked at #27 - Be Careful didn't make my chart at any point.

The final top 10 this week comes from American rapper Lil Xan. Watch Me Fall is the lead single from his sophomore album Be Safe, due out in February, and soars to an impressive #10 debut despite only being released on Thursday (the impact of school holidays giving me more time to listen to music). It's his sixth top 10 hit, and guaranteed to be a huge contender for next week's #1 spot - a huge return to form after SLOPE, the lead single from his mixtape XANARCHY MILITIA at the end of 2018, missed my top 40 entirely.

Why does it look like you had trouble finding more songs to replace the holiday hits so you flooded the bottom end with Matteo’s entire discography

There seems to be quite a lot in your chart I haven't heard which is unusual :blink:

 

I wonder if that 5SOS/Julia song has a chance of taking off? Presumably its impact date is still a way off and it will be added to radio stations at some point.

 

I wish Avril's new one could do something, I think I actually prefer it to Head Above Water! Let's hope the album does well although I have my doubts tbh :(

 

Little Mix and Rita Ora need to quickly move on to their next singles (assuming they are what they're rumoured to be) and capitalise on their continued pre-Christmas momentum.

 

Can't actually believe just how poorly Zayn's album did, even considering the bad timing of its release, but There You Are was a definite highlight from it so it's good to see it sneak into your chart. Where he goes from here is anyone's guess :unsure:
