Reached number 1 in the last week of 2018 but most of it's span at the top started off 2019. Which year do you think Sweet But Psycho belongs in?

It'll probably be thought of as a 2018 song as that's when it was released and peaked, though because of how streaming works most of its chart sales will be acquired in 2019.

Too early to tell as far as personal opinion is concerned. Depends what comes to mind when I hear the song in a year's time, like will it bring back memories of hearing it out around Christmastime or will it be memories of now.

 

MK's 17 reminds me of Christmas 2017/New Year so I'd probably consider that a 2017 chart song, despite it peaking in 2018.

It's ultimately going to vary from person to person depending on when they discovered it. For a lot of people on this site (myself included) it's obviously going to be 2018 because we liked it before it became a hit (of course) but some people will obviously only be buying it now and for them it will probably remind them of 2019 instead.

2018 was the year it was released so it's a 2018 song.

There's so many of these over the years, where a song spans the new year and reminds me of both at once - 'Dancing In The Moonlight' for 2000/2001, 'Hey Ya!' for 2003/2004, 'Mama Do The Hump' for 2011/2012 etc. Even a summer release like 'I Gotta Feeling' spans right through to the first half of the next year as it was a clubbing staple for months, you'd hear it twice in a night at its peak and the DJ would troll people by randomly playing the first couple of seconds only to start a completely different song :P

Tracks like Gagas Fame album I associate with 2009 rather than 2008 as over in the UK they didn’t make an impact until then but with SBS it’s a 2018 smash what carried over into 2019.

Speaking of Lady Gaga, some people class Bad Romance as the first #1 of the 2010s when it actually got #1 in 2009

It was becoming a hit in 2013 where it reached #1 that year and stayed in the chart until late 2014. I’d class it as a 2013 song and a 2013 #1. Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall is another example. It got #1 in 1979 and stayed at the top through to 1980

I’m in the 2009 gang. But I class Telephone and Alejandro as 2010.

I think regardless of when a song peaks, as time goes on and the division of years/when people remember hearing it gets more blurry, the original release date is what people remember (mainly because they'll look it up on Wikipedia and see that first). Of course it's also possible that Spotify could supersede it as a source, and if the song ever ends up on an album released on 2019 and the single gets deleted, that could take hold, and it could happen regardless of how little it matches up to the time the song was a hit in the long run.

I would. It's all about the release date.
