I would agree that quality does matter to an extent - it's why I Don't Care hasn't been Shape of You levels of big despite the mega name power. People just don't like the song as much (though it's still doing well obviously). However, I don't think that means Katy hasn't released great songs. Bon Appétit is a VERY popular song, but only within certain circles, the general public weren't fussed. I'd argue Swish Swish was a hit though.

The Witness era is underrated imo. "Swish Swish" is an absolute jam and "Bon Appétit" really grew on me. "Chained" is decent too
That is what blacksquare was saying no? x People were writing off Katy as if she could never get another hit but really she just needed to have the right song. I really liked 'Bon Appétit' but it was pretty obviously a terrible single choice and her other singles since then, until this one, were not what she needed to get back to major sucecss.

Hopefully 'Rocket Man' can sneak back into the official top 100 this week, it came close last week and would've easily made it if not for ACR.
I think with Never Really Over it's a case of it being instantly catchy and likeable. It's pretty much one of her best reviewed tracks ever, even Pitchfork who never really give her good reviews said it was one of her best songs ever.

good for Katy Perry! The new single is really what Taylor was trying to do with Me but totally failed at it
I get the impression they were attempting to achieve the same kinda song but Taylor turned into a nursery rhyme and totally flopped while Katy has made a great perfect pure pop song

In Bjork's defence, "ME!" does sound like it was written for an episode of Barney or something in places. SPELLING IS FUN!

Its obvious Taylor is trying to have a uplifting track after a dark era (by her standards) with reputation, I would say its more along the lines of bubblegum pop than a "children's" song its hardly baby shark or Can we fix it? (Both great novelty songs)

 

I would probably prefer the Katy track if it was sung by Taylor it does sound like it could suit her better but NRO and ME! Are hardly similar songs. And hopefully Katy can continue to have decent success too
