‘Work From Home’ being in the top 5 of all time feels so odd

Its since 1994, rather than 'all time', but yeah you're overiding point definitely still stands given the high sales climate of the first 7-ish years of the period, and how well remembered hits from those years are compared to pretty much anything in the list from the streaming era (an era in which even a track that missed the Top 40 apparently performed well enough to make this Top 100!).

no Bananarama, easily the best band ever :/
I get that it's impossible to objectively compare songs from different sales climates but I feel like they should down-weight some of these big streaming hits. There's no way 'That's My Girl' and 'Oops' were more popular than all the top ten hits below it.
Well there was a fair way to measure these things before 2014 so ‘never has been’ isn’t really true.

I’m happy for you that Little Mix have done so well in this list but the fact is their songs aren’t as popular as this list makes them seem.

Nah, you just have to accept that the streaming era is here. Streaming has been replacing sales for years now. Not using streaming to put this list together would be unfair to Little Mix and all new girlbands.

It's time to accept that people have different preferences for consuming music now.

what about Bangles?

are they not considered a girl band? or they didn't sell enough?

Fifth Harmony having four entries is just vile.

I’m not sure I’ve even heard that many of their songs so the mind boggles.

Given the duos featuring in the list, they would be eligible, but presumably no Bangles hits have accumulated enough downloads/streams to finish Top 100, same goes for Bananarama. I'm assuming the cut off for this list exceeds 250,000 sales.

Apart from a couple of minor hits when they reformed in 2005, everything else would have been released before the 1994 start point of the period this chart covers, and it's unlikely there were many copies of those older hits still knocking around on shop shelves by 1994. Downloads maybe added a few sales when they became available, but I doubt streams have added anything much to them. Also most of their hits were SAW produced, and Pete Waterman tended in the past not to make much of his past work available on downloading and streaming, so that may have also restricted their tracks' potential to gain these. So all in all it wouldn't be likely that any of there singles would be anywhere close to the level needed for this top 100

It says a lot that I know who Camilla Cabello is and can hum at least a handful of her songs but Fifth Harmony were lost on me.

Erm, excuse you?

I can accept that streaming is here but who actually cares if a sales only list is ‘unfair’ on Little Mix? The fact is it has never worked comparing sales and streams as the same thing because they’re just not. It’s why the chart is now full of crappy rules.

By allowing streaming in a list like this, it’s actually unfair to the other girl groups.

Tough shit if Little Mix can’t compete in sales. It’s not their fault but what can you do?

It's from the past 25 years only, which also explains the lack of Bananarama. Obviously their downloads + streams aren't strong enough.

I think the problem with streams included alongside sales in this list is that the days of physical releases saw limited time periods of availability. The shops stocked them until they got deleted and sold very very little afterwards (until downloads arrived). Streaming for songs like the Little Mix and Fifth Harmony tracks was allowed to continue for months because they stay up on Spotify etc. There's no real way to level the playing field - a sales only list would be equally unfair on the recent hits because obviously the likes of SOTME and Black Magic are huge hits, just a bit inflated on the scale of this list.

Similarly though, Girls Aloud, Sugababes and Atomic Kitten are severely under-represented in my opinion - because of the low sales period of the mid 2000s! It works both ways and it's why a list over time will never ever be perfect.

With respect you might be missing the point a little bit. No one is saying completely ignore streaming hits, but it is clear from this chart that the exchange rate used to convert streams into sales is disproportionate, and makes the streaming hits seem bigger than they actually were. One of the streaming 'hits' in this chart didn't even reach the Top 40 for flips sake, how can it possibly be a bigger hit than the various popular charttoppers and other top 3 hits below it on this list?

Chart positions and peaks don't matter that much in the streaming era. Streams trickle in overtime and accumulate.

I'm not sure if I've heard ANY of there songs. Maybe I have, and I just didn't know it was by them, but nothing stands out from the song titles.

You're not wrong with this - Oops was definitely a notable hit and #41 in the streaming era means a hell of a lot more than #41 did during the 90s and 00s. It's undoubtedly inflated (like I said, due to a continued period of availability which the Spice Girls, Girls Aloud, Sugababes, etc songs didn't have at the time of their release)

M.O's #18 hit from last year "outselling" (for want of a better phrase) all bar one of Girls Aloud singles, and all bar one of Sugababes singles... I feel this strongly highlights how incredibly awkward it is to put together songs from different eras of consumption.

Same goes with the #25 & #26 peaking singles from Fifth Harmony being quite high up (All In My Head is Gold certified), and the #41 peaking album track Oops by Little Mix on the verge of outselling the #1 Freak Like Me by Sugababes.

Chart positions and peaks don't matter that much in the streaming era. Streams trickle in overtime and accumulate.

But you still can’t claim that the streaming hits these days are bigger than the no.1s from 20 years ago.

Back then you have to get up off your arse and pay an extortionate price for something that could only be played if you had the right device. You actually had to make a commitment.

What isn’t differentiated with streaming is exactly how many people are streaming each song or whether or not the person streaming it even like it or it just happens to be on the playlist they’re listening to.

Those are two very different scenarios and it’s tiring to see people trying to compare them like for like.

Just played it on youtube and to be fair maybe I heard it once or twice at the time, but I wouldn't say it was that good or that big a hit, and certainly not as big as some of the much more well known stuff on the list.

It was #15 in the end of year chart for 2016, it's not really a matter of opinion whether or not it was 'that big a hit'
