Fun fact though, I believe the song's called 9PM because when ATB finished producing the song he looked at the time and it was exactly 9PM.

Just as well then, I doubt 'ten past seven till I come' wouldn't have had the same ring to it.

Yeah only been two so far! We were discussing ideas in the chart lounge and Dan brought up doing a re-run of the Xmas 2009 chart battle when the time comes, so I thought it would be interesting to do the same for other 'chart battles' (whether they be close races to #1, big new releases entering at the same time or just songs that would be interesting to pit together).

In that case I look forward to Blur v Oasis, arguably the biggest chart battle of all time (although I can't see that thread getting quite as much attention as these two).

One thing I do have to say about this that counts against ATB: the video made absolutely no sense whatsoever. Quite what a vacant model playing a spy and detonating a chicken he's roasted has to do with the track I have no idea!

Unusually the 2 import versions of 9pm (Till I Come) were in the top 75 the same week two weeks before - one at #55, one at #63. This seemed to violate a rule banning any title from occupying 2 simultaneous chart positions (which was introduced after Blur and Oasis both managed it in 1995).

I think it was because they were different imports - one was from Australia, the other from Europe. Crazy to think that's how desperate some people were to get hold of a song in a time before global release dates we have now!

This! The amount of times I paid £10 for a CD single in the imports section of HMV in Oxford Street so that I could get it 3 weeks before it was released!

I know I bought Blue (Da Ba Dee) a month or so before it was released on import, for like £7, which was a lot of money to a 12 year old!

I believe that went top 40 on import sales alone so clearly lots of people were willing to pay a premium. As a bonus the imports tended to have six or seven songs, with lots of mixes and often an instrumental etc, whereas UK chart rules limited the CD singles to 20 minutes or under I think, so usually three or four songs.

omg this is a blast from the past. Charting on import sales alone

Even in 2008 I remember HMV were selling import copies of Scooter's 'Jumping All Over The World' weeks before the UK release of the album, for £16. I ended up having to buy it twice as the eventual UK release had a few different tracks

Does pain me a bit thinking how much money I was spending on CD singles/albums as recently as the late 2000s, all of which are now on Spotify for basically free.
