Overview

Celebrating the first year of ‘NOW That’s What I Call Music’ – 1983.

‘Now Yearbook’ presents a stellar selection of 1983’s biggest and best hits… 80 huge chart hits from the year, alongside enduring and well-loved classics on 4 CDs.

1983 saw British artists achieving unprecedented success across the world with ‘Every Breath You Take’ from The Police being the year’s biggest seller in the U.S., and ‘Karma Chameleon’ from Culture Club being the top seller in the U.K.

Breakthrough acts, achieving their first big hits – all here – include a staggering line-up of future superstars: U2, Eurythmics, Wham!, Paul Young, The Style Council, Marillion and Thompson Twins, to name a few..

A large number of established artists also scored their biggest ever hits in 1983: Bonnie Tyler produced a global smash with ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’, Billy Joel’s ‘Uptown Girl’ introduced his biggest selling album in the U.K., Lionel Richie’s ‘All Night Long’ was the year’s feel-good track, Elton John’s ‘I’m Still Standing’ was an instant classic on release, and Tina Turner hit big with ‘Let’s Stay Together’, which would lead to the huge success of the ‘Private Dancer’ album the following year….and not forgetting Genesis, Donna Summer, Mike Oldfield, Joan Armatrading, Robert Plant, and three superstar duets – all of which achieved massive sales : Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes’ theme from ‘An Officer And A Gentleman’ , ‘Up Where We Belong’, the stunning collaboration between Robert Flack & Peabo Bryson on ‘Tonight I Celebrate My Love’… and the Bee Gees penned ‘Islands In The Stream’ from Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers…

1983 also saw a number of artists who had seen previous releases on the fringes of the chart achieve mainstream success including The Cure and Echo And The Bunnymen, and former punk and new-wave chart regulars saw renewed success including Siouxsie And The Banshees, The Stranglers, Public Image Limited, and Elvis Costello…

Synth Pop continued to dominate and Howard Jones, Tears For Fears, The Human League, Heaven 17 and Simple Minds all enjoyed a hit packed year…alongside electro-dance smashes from Freeez, Malcolm McLaren, Rock Steady Crew and Laura Branigan… whilst New Order delivered a genre defining classic and a truly iconic 12” single.

…and not forgetting the artists that had been the break-out stars of 80-82: Madness, Adam Ant, Altered Images, Bananarama, and Nick Heyward… alongside some of the most enduring tracks ever including Toto’s ‘Africa’, UB40’s ‘Red Red Wine’ and Luther Vandross’ ‘Never Too Much’…

Bringing the year to a close, we feature the Christmas #1 from The Flying Pickets with their cover of ‘Only You’ – and ‘2000 Miles’ from Pretenders, which nearly 40 years later has long established itself as one of the all-time classic Christmas songs….

‘NOW Yearbook 1983’: 80 songs that reflect the charts in the year that ‘NOW’ began… and celebrates the diversity of those charts – from the huge hits that are still played on the radio today alongside lesser compiled but equally cherished tracks.

Brilliant but it’s missing You Can’t Hurry Love by Phil Collins which was the first #1 of 1983 and the opening track on NOW 1. They should also do a NOW Yearbook spin-off for every year

Edited by Hadji

^ I'm wondering if it is because it was actually released Decmeber 82 so isn't technically a track from that year? Is there anything else from 82 (not re-released) on here?

Possibly but then again, it appeared on the 10th anniversary edition of NOW 1983 and the millennium edition of NOW 1982

Yeah I think it’s 1982 that Phil Collins would be credited for, although it could be easy to think 1983.

Aside from the inevitable absence of Billie Jean, I would have surely thought Frankie Goes To Hollywood would have made it with Relax. David Bowie is another absentee, and I would quite liked Rod Stewart to be included with Baby Jane too.

I’ve already concluded from this idea that is what they are going to do, it would seem pretty pointless to only have one yearbook ever made lol.

So basically it will be like the 10th anniversary editions and millennium editions but with 4 discs

They should have started off with 1980 like they did with the millennium series, not with 1983 like the 10th anniversary series
They better not be yearly releases

I hope they become weekly releases or fortnightly releases

Not a chance they'll be weekly! I think you'll be lucky if there's a release every 3 months or so

I remember the 10th anniversary editions (1983-1995) were released between 1993 and 1995 and the millennium editions (1980-1999) were released in 1999

I reckon they’ll announce NOW 109 along with the artwork next Tuesday, a week before the tracklist reveal like they did with NOW 108

Well, it looks like those are dead certs to be on the album  Nice to see it'll be The Weeknd & Ariana version of 'Save Your Tears' :o

I assume we'll get double Little Mix too.

Looking by the cover, we can expect to be on there:-

Lil Nas X - Montero (Calling Me By Your Name)

Olivia Rodrigo - Either 'De Ja Vu' or 'Good For You'...maybe both? I'd put my money on the former judging by the order.

Justin Bieber - Hold On

KSI - Patience

The Weeknd & Ariana Grande - Save Your Tears

Coldplay - Higher Power

Billie Eilish - Your Power

Calvin Harris feat. Tom Grennan - By Your Side

Rag N Bone Man & Pink - Anywhhere Away From Here

Russ Millions x Tion Wayne - Body

Joel Corry x Raye x David Guetta - Bed

There’s no need to include SYT on 109 when it was on 108. If anything, SYT should’ve been left off 108 in order to include it on 109 like they did with "Bed". And also, I thought Bieber stopped including his tracks on NOW albums. Nice to see him on there but I’d prefer if it was with "Peaches". With KSI, it will be "Holiday" as it would’ve said KSI, YUNGBLUD & Polo G on the cover if it was "Patience"
