Robbie Williams, the cutie who conquered the world

The ego has descended (i.e., “the ego has descended”). that was the title of the album with Robbie Williams It was going to be promoted—basically—all over the world. It was the 1999 version, but in fact said album was a trap, a booby trap. These two albums were merged into one: Life Through a Lens (1997) and I’ve Been Expecting You (1998), Williams’ first two solo recordings, with which she made a splash in her home country, England. And boy did the “boobies” catch. Seduced by the quality of the songs, the voice and—almost equally important—the character, millions entered as if through a hoop.

Now that it’s been 25 years since his first solo album was released, some may wonder how this guy came to be in the boy band Take That (is there anything that has a worse reputation outside of the teen universe than a boy band?) , reached such a height. Because Williams was number one in almost all categories for a few years.

Take him

One factor that certainly played a role is that Williams took with him one of the most important elements of the boy band formula. They already had a presence, but there they achieved professionalism through tours and recordings put on by people who exploited those on stage. Boy band members work out more than anyone. When they come out of that meat grinder, they already have complete command of everything related to standing in front of an audience and entertaining them. Another element is that Williams had very diverse musical passions. He liked pop, but he also liked rock, soul, big band jazz, and he was also enthusiastic about artists who had little to do with his musical homeland (he covered Manu Chao songs in one of his albums). was covered). With that background, he struck up a friendship with a musician who came from almost the opposite suite of his: Guy Chambers. He was almost in an alternative rock band: World Party. Between them they compiled a list of songs that somehow united those two worlds. The success created such havoc that it practically took everything, including himself. In an interview published a month earlier for Vogue magazine, at one point he says: “From a very young age I was announcing to the world: ‘I have to go to a rehab clinic.'”

And finally, character.

In both the song’s lyrics and the way Williams presented herself (clothes, hairstyles, photographic productions, video clips), it was clear that this was not the typical girlfriend who, after stirring up the hormones of teenage girls, With the record, perhaps a movie or television series and participation in shows like Dancing with the Stars, is going to bet on a trajectory as a star suitable for all audiences. no sir. Williams wanted the same thing as Scarface, the character played by Al Pacino in the film of the same name: “The world. And he has it all.” If I have to crack some eggs to make that omelette, I’ll do it.

In 1995, two years before his debut solo album, Williams took the first steps in his crossover campaign (a term used for artists who manage to win over an audience that until then had not paid any attention to them): He went to the Glastonbury Rock Festival and stuck for Oasis Legion. Take That fans and Oasis fans are blown away. What was Williams doing among rockers if he were a popstar? In the same Vogue interview, Williams says: “I didn’t want to be a part of that world, it was the opposite of what I was supposed to represent, both in public and in private.” But there he was, socializing with Oasis. “I was with most rock bands on the planet at the time,” he said, as if “suck, Giles.” hanging out with the rockers. Breaking the mold and defying expectations was part of Williams’ modus operandi, and with that attitude — and talent to spare — she continued her campaign to the top.

It didn’t take long for the link with Oasis to break. That’s all well and good with both clans of awe-stricken fans, but the pop-rock romp came to an end when Williams first recorded and began seriously competing with them on chart sales and concert ticket numbers. And although today almost everyone remembers the battle between Oasis and Blur for the preferences of the general public, the truth is that Williams dealt more than one blow to the Gallagher family’s ego.

Still, Williams had more important things to do than fight the Oasis brothers. The first two records were followed by the production of Sing When You’re Winning in 2000. By then, Williams had signed a record deal for so much money that he looked more like a football pass than a music star. Part of that contract stipulated that the label would have to devote significant resources to making Williams a star in the United States.

However, this did not happen. Williams never achieved the same influence there as he did in the rest of the world. In a television appearance two years earlier, the hosts of the program asked him why he had not achieved in the United States what he had achieved in the world. Williams: “Do you remember what happened with Britney Spears when she shaved her head, that she had all these problems? Well, I was in a similar situation to Britney in terms of my mental health, when she went through a storm. America was about to take over. Williams, like soccer, is not for the United States, but for the world.

Similarly, a new Netflix doc about Robbie Williams is also in the works.

Like David Beckham’s the documentary will take the form of a series, examining the chart-topping star’s 30 years in the spotlight, including all the “ups and downs” from his time in Take That, his struggles with addiction and the media scrutiny he’s experienced througout.

And this is no exception… Absolutely amazing debut of @robbiewilliams in the art arena. It’s quite hard to stand out today in the seemingly “overcrowded” space but Robbie managed to create his own unique and very recognizable style. The depth, the nuances, the flow and presentation are incredible. The more you look at each painting the more you discover. Thank you for the wonderful evening at a private showing at @sothebys ❤️🙏🏻 #robbiewilliams #art #contemporaryart #dubai #sothebyscontemporary

Dubai: Robbie Williams and Ed Godrich debut art exhibition at Sotheby’s

eO4ENgZ.png

Here’s your chance to take a peek inside pop icon Robbie Williams’ artistic mind. Until December 16, Sotheby’s Dubai is hosting a solo exhibition of paintings by Robbie Williams and his creative partner, Ed Godrich. Under the name Williams Godrich, the exhibition – titled ‘Black and White Paintings II’ – features 15 never-before-seen monochrome paintings.

“Dubai has a special place in my heart, and it feels particularly fitting that after ringing in the New Years in the city, I will be closing the year by unveiling my art here. This show is the next step in sharing mine and Ed’s creative vision with the world, and I hope that the feelings of curiosity and positivity that fueled our art will resonate with everyone who comes to the exhibition,” said Robbie Williams.

A partnership built on, in their own words, “friendship, communication, respect and trust”, Robbie and Ed bonded over a love of abstract art, as well as music, which encouraged them to create together as an artist duo. In five years, they have created works with an aesthetic deeply rooted in a nostalgia for the 1990s music scene: vibrant, euphoric and pulsating with life.

In May 2022, the artist duo exhibited their paintings publicly for the very first time, in an exhibition at Sotheby’s London. Now, Sotheby’s Dubai is hosting the next step in their artistic journey, with a new body of works that builds on the themes explored in the first iteration. Following on from the female names that adorned the previous exhibition, all fifteen paintings in this showcase are titled after popular men’s names from the 1980s. Together, they feel that these are “the names that define the eighties, an influential era, which has inspired our art”, many representing people that they knew.

“We are thrilled to be hosting ‘Williams Godrich’ for their first exhibition in the Middle East. The UAE has a thriving art scene, and through their many years of collaborative artistic expression, Robbie and Ed encapsulate the spirit of creativity that is blossoming here,” said Katia Nounou Boueiz, Head of Sotheby’s UAE.
