January 8, 20205 yr Author As things stand there’s a long way to go to overtake Band Aid (which is currently on 4,661,000 sales)! That’s 2,028,000 ahead of Mariah. At the current rate, Mariah will be on 4.85m by the end of Christmas 2024. By which time, Band Aid will probably be on around 6m. I guess it will take until some time in the 2030s for Mariah to overtake. By which point they’d both be in the region of 7m sales (which sounds so ridiculous :’) ) This is of course assuming that their popularity & rate of sales holds up, and that OCC’s streaming ratio remains the same for years to come!
January 10, 20205 yr Yeh the sales will sound ridiculous if they count streams in the same way for years.
January 10, 20205 yr Ya when we look at it that way its ridiculous. Until a few years ago a million selling single was a huge success, what's a huge success for a single nowadays though?
January 10, 20205 yr The million mark being considered special has always been arbitrary, it just so happened that a fairly difficult sales mark to reach was also a nice round number. Not to mention that the million mark has always fluctuated in how difficult it is to achieve (in the mid-00s not even the absolute monster huge hits were able to get there, whereas even before streaming being included on the charts it was starting to become a slightly more routine milestone). How about just comparing the success of songs to other songs released in the same timeframe? :P

January 11, 20205 yr my post was about the platinum certification being arbitrary, as you have said before
January 11, 20205 yr I've said nothing about platinum certification being arbitrary, I said that about the million sales mark. I'm not sure why the BPI hasn't moved the mark for platinum certification up again as streaming has clearly devalued what 600k units represents but hey ho ~

Multiplatinum certifications exist. Also, they could always intruduce the diamont certification, like in the US.
January 11, 20205 yr I think it is much easier to achieve a platinum selling single now than ever and so many songs reach it but yet do not seem to be songs that are huge hits.
January 12, 20205 yr Author Songs reach that as they are making their way UP the chart these days. Not really, they could enter at their peak & still easily achieve a certification. It’s little to do with the short term of their first few chart positions, and a lot more to do with the long haul. Big hit songs (most of which are initially established by their inclusion in the most popular playlists) + their constant availability to stream, means it’s easier for them to accumulate sales over a long stretch of time. It’s also because the public don’t let go of certain hits, they’ll continue playing them for months/years. That’s a huge difference to the days of physicals when there was a limited period of time a single would be heavily stocked. If a single was going to be popular enough to be platinum and a million seller, it would usually have had to have sold the bulk of its stock within 2 months to ensure this. Even in the download era, the demand for a song would eventually die down & it could take certain hits a long time to “trickle sell” their way to a certification. Hit songs today just don’t face those barriers & have all the time in the world to reach a certification or “sell” a million.
May 4, 20205 yr Author My signed copies from her USA store finally arrived today :cheer:  Glad you received them at last! I got mine last Tuesday, I like that this version is in a jewel case! My AIWFCIY 2019 collection: CD (Card Sleeve) CD (Jewel Case with signed cover) 7" Vinyl Cassette (Red) ... unfortunately I couldn't justify the 12" vinyl (I feared it would end up giving me a customs charge, so I thought I'd pass on it) or the green cassette (didn't feel the need to get both colours). Were you meant to have recieved it at christmas ? I think at the time it went up for pre-order (mid December) it said something like "will be dispatched within 10 to 16 weeks"! So April was in line with their estimate. The back cover says '2020' as the year of copyright, so it wasn't even printed before Christmas, ha. Still, we love a festive moment in April/May! :cheer:

Band Aid's popularity is decreasing every year, and the lyrics sound more and more archaic. It won't last much longer!
November 14, 20204 yr Author All I Want for Christmas Is You is back in the UK charts at #60, its 100th week in the Top 100! *.* Its total sales: 2,688,628. It's off to a stronger start with audio streaming this year, compared to the same week in 2019: Fri 13th Nov 2020 - #60 7,221 chart sales (ACR applied) / 14,110 sales 333 downloads 1,242,288 premium audio streaming 314,506 ad-funded audio streaming 454,368 video streaming Fri 15th Nov 2019 - #77 6,162 chart sales (ACR applied) / 11,699 sales 624 downloads 969,389 premium audio streaming 268,486 ad-funded audio streaming 536,961 video streaming It should end this year with total sales exceeding 3 million *.* I hope Official Charts Company have sorted out their apparent problem with her video streaming this year  (Last year on the Friday 27th Dec chart, OCC only had her down as having 714,076 video streams, whereas Wham had 2,249,051 & Pogues 1,244,542 - yet Mariah's views on YouTube UK that week were far greater than Wham or Pogues... #fix x).
November 14, 20204 yr Given that the rest of her streaming numbers are up from this time last year while her video streams are down, I have a feeling they're still siphoning off some of her video streams (which iirc only started happening partway through her run last year) oop ~
