Do people think a Little Mix Christmas song will do well? It feels still too early for Christmas music especially anything new.

They are a big pop group and it's released at the perfect time - it'll be sent to radio Friday and playlisted the following week possibly instant added to start December.

Ariana has had a bigger year than Lewis! Every single from TUN went #1!

I think Lewis has been bigger, his albums in the top 3 sellers.

Think Ariana has that international star power but she's released too much this year imo and diluted the quality.

Here are when some Christmas #1s of the previous century were released:

1985 Shakin' Stevens “Merry Christmas Everyone” - 25/11/1985

1988 Cliff Richard “Mistletoe & Wine” - 21/11/1988

1992 Whitney Housten “I Will Always Love You” - 02/11/1992

1994 East 17 “Stay Another Day” - 21/11/1994

Nope.

needy peaked at number 8 and her last number 1 was in February.

Don't Call Me Angel peaked at #2 and would have been a non number 1 if it was number 1 cos plummeted the week after. I think British general public is a bit tired of her atm.

The only contenders of artist of the year are Lewis and Ed. Next week will be decisive to know which one is bigger. :P

needy was not a single. Cqm's right - all three of the TUN singles went to #1.

That said, Lewis definitely feels like he's had a bigger year. Four huge hit singles and a fifth just beginning, plus a massive album of course! Whilst Ed's of course done amazingly it's felt like Lewis has had that extra bit of hype (likely thanks to his strong social media presence too)

'needy' wasn't a single...

If a non single can be number 8, it could have been number 1 if Ariana was that huge at the time.

? It was an album track that charted at #8 in album release week. It was her third highest track, in a week where she also had #1 and #2...

Sure Lewis is the star of 2019, followed by Ed but at quite a long distance

Ariana? Don't think so, she started the year well-enough but her last 2 singles have underperformed, plus she doesn't sell albums

To do 600K plus streams without HH or TTH support, a surprise middle of the week release and no video. Really, he just missed another easy number 1.

Lewis' last number 1 was in March... (+ it's not like she's not had hits throughout the year either, just like Capaldi)

Does Lewis just not "feel bigger" due to him being a new artist? Whereas Ari was continuing on from the year before and was touring a HUGE WW tour the majority of this year. I feel like she's had a bigger year, but Lewis is definitely next in line, imo. Ed's had a big year, but his downfall is that he's had bigger years and the sales (by Ed's standards, at least) are a little underwhelming/not as high as people predicted/expected to be by this point.

(All imo ofc)

Yeh absolutely not too early, needs time to build and be playlisted especially if it's a Christmas song. Back in the day songs built up like this era compared to the held back release days.

His last number one was in March yes but it was also the years biggest hit.

I get that, but it was more pointing out that their comment about Ariana's last number 1 being in February was irrelevant (at least momentarily :kink:)
Fair enough, I am of the opinion Lewis has been bigger in he UK especially.

Christmas singles are so different though, Katy Perry, Coldplay, Kylie, Kelly Clarkson etc all big artists who released Christmas songs who struggled upon release.

These days Christmas songs tend to need a few years to feel classic and worthy or playlist, Christmas parties and so on.

There's a reason for each of them though - Coldplay was released midweek so it's sales were cut in two and it was relatively hard to grow even in the post 2006 era when downloads made it possible again. It was A Listed on radio 1 at the time and a modern Xmas classic.

Katy was an Amazon exclusive last year so that restricted it a lot and radio 2 only picked it up, radio 1 ignored it.

Kylie isn't really a huge singles artist anymore she's a legendary one who gets airplay on radio 2 and sells relatively well albums wise. Her single was never going to do well at the time on airplay or charts wise.

Kelly Clarkson got a top 30 hit without any huge playlisting from uk radio so I would describe it as a hit.

Lewis is more of the star of the year just because he’s come from nowhere this year to really slay and he can shift albums too. With Ariana (who I love) her album sales pale compared to other huge females who’ve had similar success in the singles chart to her. Like

Singles wise Ari is the Rihanna of 2010-11 but Rihanna’s album sales then were like 5x Arianas. (UK wise only).

WW Ariana has been the main star though definitely the biggest female. Gaga has also had a strong year with ASIB still selling and awards wise she’s cleaned up and really turned around public opinion too.

Lewis added for HH at 7 and Stormzy at 14. On TTH both added also with Lewis at 14 and Stormzy at 38. Stormzy video is out today at 10am, that will leave no chance for Lewis.
