December 20, 20195 yr I loved the rockier sound to 'Cry For Me' too! It's my second favorite from Romance behind 'Liar'. 'WHO DO YOU LOVE?' was a great track too, I slightly prefer it over the other collab with the same name (Chainsmokers/5SOS) :magic:
December 20, 20195 yr Let You was okay but not the big pop anthem Cheryl really needed to get another hit. Can't see her bothering with music anymore after its disastrous chart performance anyhow. Bury a Friend was rather good from Billie although I did prefer Bad Guy and When the Party's Over.
December 20, 20195 yr Author Let You was okay but not the big pop anthem Cheryl really needed to get another hit. Can't see her bothering with music anymore after its disastrous chart performance anyhow. Bury a Friend was rather good from Billie although I did prefer Bad Guy and When the Party's Over. Yeah I definitely prefer when the party’s over but it was released last year so didn’t make my list!
December 20, 20195 yr Cry For Me has really hit me since the album has released. It certainly has the potential to be my favourite off Romance eventually.
December 20, 20195 yr Bury a Friend really was Billie's breakthrough, it always felt really odd to me that such a non-mainstream song got so high in the charts! I hoped it might lead similar songs by other artists to crack the charts but alas no.
December 20, 20195 yr Author azo1XPqwwUc 70. Killing Butterflies- Lewis Blissett 69. So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings- Caroline Palochek 68. Cross Me- Ed Sheeran feat. Chance The Rapper & PNB Rock 67. Heal- Jax Anderson 66. No Good- Ally Brooke 70 sees Lewis Blissett’s Killing Butterflies entering. A dark and moody song that’s chaotic as it is brilliant. Popjustice describes Blissett as a cross between Billie Eilish and Troye Sivan and they couldn’t have been more right- Eilish’s smooth vocals and Sivan’s ear for a killer pop hook are evident on this and the run he does at the end of the middle 8 is camp stupidity but amazing nonetheless. Queen Palochek’s is next with So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings from her absolutely killer album (and maybe my AOTY along with NFR) Pang! The song is minimal using 80s synths and electronic bleeps. The melodies are catchy as ever and the gasp closing the bridge just sums up the tongue-in-cheek lyrics and energy of the song. Ed Sheeran makes a rare appearance considering I hated pretty much every other one of the songs from his “collection” released this year. Cross Me is however quite a banger. Chance’s rap is infectious, the PNB sample and Ed’s choruses which sound really good against this R&B backdrop surprisingly. The next 2 songs, Jax Anderson’s Heal and Fifth Harmony alumni Ally’s No Good are recent entries in this list and have done well to climb this high. The amount of replays each have had in such a short time warrant their placings though.
December 22, 20195 yr Author 0H6vdQSXaR4 65. Different Things- GRACEY 64. Demons- Hayley Kiyoko 63. I Wish I Never Met You- Oh Wonder 62. Orange Trees- Marina 61. These Days- JORDY GRACEY is at 65 with Different Things a song I discovered- as many I discover- from Popjustice. The song is an emotional, vocodered and electronic ballad that along with it’s strong vocals and intense lyrics really capture heartbreak perfectly. Would love to see big things from GRACEY going into 2020 as I’ve really enjoyed her output so far. Demons beats out L.O.V.E Me and I Wish as my favourite Hayley song of the year. After seeing her for the 2nd time in February I have been anxiously anticipating what will come from her 2nd era and have been very pleased with it so far (although latest release Runaway didn’t quite hit me as hard), but this spooky, distorted number is a really earworm and could have done pretty well commercially I think had it been pushed. Another one of my favourites are up next, Oh Wonder with I Wish I Never Met You, a string-accompanied pop number very similar to a few of Sigrid’s. IWINMY features the groups usual synchronised harmonies and knack for a catchy chorus to create an all round belter of a pop song. Next up is MARINA with Orange Trees. Marina hasn’t had her most successful year this year with panning of her album Love+Fear coming from critics to fans alike sadly. Some gems could be found in there however as Handmade Heaven, To Be Human and my personal favourite Orange Trees were songs I really enjoyed this year. Orange Trees, like Demons, could I think, have been successful this year with a commercial push so it was a shame to see that go to waste as it’s such a happy and positive summer song I think the GP could have lapped this up. Final song in this review is These Days by JORDY, a song I will be the first to say is a bit by-numbers in it’s pop sound but one I really ended up enjoying due to the delivery and lyrics by JORDY himself. His voice is a great pop voice and I think he has potential to become successful with his Lauv-style songs.
December 23, 20195 yr omg at Killing Butterflies!!!! One of my absolute fave songs of 2019, so pleased to see another fan!
December 27, 20195 yr Author wBmWvvTV0P4 60. Torn- Ava Max 59. Jacques- Jax Jones & Tove Lo 58. Valentino- Years & Years feat. MNEK 57. Changing- Becky Hill 56. Regulars- Allie X Starting the top 60 is possibly the campest song yet in this countdown. Ava Max went disco with Torn- an ABBA sampling, pop behemoth that sadly flopped pretty incredibly despite it’s good radio rotation over here. The music video and artworks for the single were admittedly tacky but the song and that killer pop middle 8 is pretty sublime. Jacques by Jax Jones & Tove Lo is next up with a pure house banger. The spoken part before the chorus makes this song the quirky jam it is and the layering of vocals over pretty standard but enjoyable dance drops and build-ups has become one of my favourites from both artists this year. The 2nd of the Valentine-released songs this year comes next at number 58 with Valentino by Years & Years and MNEK. A fun and lively anti-Valentine song describing a break-up over the flamenco guitar riff made this a really instant one for me and one I have returned back to over the course of the year. MNEK’s runs definitely deserve a shoutout here as well as they’re stellar as always with that run over the second chorus being a real highlight of the song for me. My personal favourite of Becky’s song this year Changing comes at 57 due to being such a great dance track and the chorus being undeniably brilliant and the ad-libs throughout being very strong. Finally in this section is my selection out of a tough call between itself and Fresh Laundry, Regulars by Allie X, my personal favourite of her 2019 releases. The song is an unusual number with dark pop production and haunting, interesting vocals that make this a real memorable number released this year I have really ended up enjoying.
December 28, 20195 yr Fab to see Jacques here, I my favourite Jax song from this year by far. Giving Orange Trees a listen now, certainly a lot more chilled out than some of her recent songs but still quite enjoying it!
December 28, 20195 yr Author bohnbvNWYkk 55. Problems- DeathByRomy 54. Bad As The Boys- Tove Lo feat. ALMA 53. All My Friends- Madeon 52. Mine Right Now- Sigrid 51. Ladbroke Grove- AJ Tracey DeathByRomy starts off this section with her spooky banger Problems. The production is what makes this song for me as the lyrics come across a little generic and heard-before for me. The instrumentation is eerie whilst still remaining that fun and almost childlike quality artists like Melanie Martinez have enjoyed success and positive reception for. My personal favourite Tove Lo song (controversially) is next with Bad As The Boys featuring ALMA. A rather subdued effort from her 2019 release Sunshine Kitty this was one of about 5 songs viable for taking the title as my highest Tove Lo song as well as Sweettalk My Heart, Glad He’s Gone, Really Don’t Like U and of course Jacques which I gave a place to due to Jax Jones being the first artist mentioned on the credits. The laidback summer vibe of this is what made me pick it and the lyrical subject matter is quite interesting and new as a topic in mainstream(ish) music. All My Friends comes next with an electronic near-masterpiece that remains a fun, summer dance track whilst also being one of my favourite chilled songs of the year. The vocals are smooth and irresistible over that repeated vocodered refrain that is one of the most catchy for me of the entire year! Sigrid’s best 2019 single (sorry DFLC) is at 52 with Mine Right Now, the synths on this are so strong and the optimistic lyrics make this one of my go-to happy songs along with Sight Of You, also off the same album. The music video definitely deserves a shoutout in this review for being one of the most creative and fun video concepts of the year for sure-one I didn’t see much love for sadly. Finally is a left-field choice for my music taste, AJ Tracey with THE festival anthem of the year Ladbroke Grove. It is very much, the hyper man set. The garage influences all over this song have this song leaps and bounds ahead of most other British rap released this year and it’s anthemic refrains, lined all over the song, make this for sure one of the most memorable big hits of the year and one I think will define the year of 2019 in the U.K. in years to come.
December 30, 20195 yr Author mZ1FzTsIQQY 50. 24- SKAAR 49. Forgive Or Forget- Ina Wroldsen 48. Afterlife- Hailee Steinfeld 47. Why Do You Love Me?- Charlotte Lawrence 46. The Question- Eden xo Making it into the top 50 is the best Sigrid song Sigrid didn’t release this year, 24 by SKAAR. The Scandinavian-pop vibe are strong with this one with the energetic yet whistful instrumentation complimenting SKAAR’s vocals perfectly and the hook is one of my favourites of the year being instantly memorable and one I have found myself keep coming back to due to it’s simple melody but charm due to it’s interesting lyrics. Next up is regular dance singer Ina Wroldsen with her solo single Forgive or Forget, I will forgive and forget the one flat note in the chorus that constantly irks me when I remember it’s there! Aside from this, this is a classic great dance track as her vocals just really lend them-self to this type of production you’d imagine Europa to produce. Hailee Steinfeld’s simply magical number Afterlife comes next and this one appears so high due to it’s transformative ability- it’s one of them songs that just sounds extremely heavenly and soft. The vocoder starting off the song and heard in the choruses got me immediately and echo Taylor Swift’s Delicate in that soft use of vocoder to great effect. Next up is Why Do You Love Me? by one of my personal favourite artists of the moment, Charlotte Lawrence- who I am seeing live in April. This is one of the songs I am most excited for due to it’s menacing sound contrasting the twisted lyrics. I would have welcomed this being a big hit but I think it’s slightly dark lyrics might have hindered it to achieve any needed playlisting or promotion. Last up is The Question by Eden xo and for no other reason than for being a brilliant pop song. I have said many times I can imagine Kylie Minogue singing this and having a pretty successful hit with it in the Aphrodite era as it’s very singalong but still that respected synth-pop style adored by critics and fans- a must-listen
January 2, 20205 yr Love All My Friends - not your typical Madeon song but a really fun and catchy dance track! Playing Mine Right Now, I definitely saw that video when it came out (you don't forget that quickly :kink:) but didn't remember the song, it's sounding alright! Why Do You Love me was quite a nice indie/pop track also!
January 3, 20205 yr Okay, catching up with the list. Here are my favourites from your list (aside from the mentioned songs): 94. Con Calma (Remix) - Daddy Yankee & Snow feat. Katy Perry I personally prefer the original over the remix 92. Let You Know- Flume feat. London Grammar 88. Now I’m In It- HAIM 87. Only Human- Jonas Brothers 84. Goodbyes- Post Malone feat. Young Thug 81. Stay (Don’t Go Away)- David Guetta feat. RAYE 78. Simmer- Mahalia feat. Burna Boy 77. Summer Fade- Snakehips feat. Anna of the North 74. bury a friend- Billie Eilish 72. Cry For Me- Camila Cabello 69. So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings- Caroline Palochek 68. Cross Me- Ed Sheeran feat. Chance The Rapper & PNB Rock 63. I Wish I Never Met You- Oh Wonder Very happy to see my current #1 on there! 60. Torn- Ava Max 59. Jacques- Jax Jones & Tove Lo 58. Valentino- Years & Years feat. MNEK 57. Changing- Becky Hill 52. Mine Right Now- Sigrid Never saw the video to this, but I like the song. Now that I've seen the video, I have to agree with your comments! 51. Ladbroke Grove- AJ Tracey 47. Why Do You Love Me?- Charlotte Lawrence Great list so far! Can't wait for the rest!
January 8, 20205 yr Author jnwDkVo6DxA 45. Mama- Ella Eyre & Banx & Ranx feat. Kiana Lede 44. God is a Dancer- Tiësto & Mabel 43. 2 Places- Tori Kelly 42. Nice To Meet Ya- Niall Horan 41. Phone Down- Stefflon Don & Lil Baby Mama, Ella’s second collab with Banx & Ranx appears at number 45 for being such a fun, tongue-in-cheek summer pop song that suited her brilliantly and deserved to smash just as much as Answerphone imo. The award for most pointless feature of the year does go to this song as Kiana’s voice blends so much with Ella they’re hard to distinguish and therefore she doesn’t really add much to the song. Tiesto’s best of the year (sorry Ritual) is next with Mabel collab God is a Dancer. Possibly the song I look forward to most for when I see her in February! The song has an interesting structure using a host of refrains and at different times which makes for a really interesting dance-pop track. The star quality she shows in the video is also brilliant to see- the most star-like she’s appeared to me as she normally comes across a tad muted, so was pleased to see this full on banger work in her favour and become a pretty sizeable hit. Possibly the most stripped back song on this entire countdown comes in at 43 as 2 Places by Tori Kelly leaves us; a beautiful, acoustic ballad about falling for someone and being weary of the consequences. The song’s subdued production works perfectly against Tori’s rousing vocals which sounds heavenly as ever. Nice To Meet Ya and Phone Down close this section, the first a rousing pop-rock anthem that deserved better on the charts to be honest. The second an immensely fun song filled with an undeniable chorus and some great verses from both Don and LilBaby!
January 9, 20205 yr Great to see Tori Kelly here! It was wonderful to finally get her new album last year.
January 13, 20205 yr Author xAxNaLAR2to 40. Peer Pressure- James Bay feat. Julia Michaels 39. Doom Days- Bastille 38. Medellin- Madonna feat. Maluma 37. Dance In The Dark- Au/Ra 36. Walk Away- Four Of Diamonds Starting my top 40 songs of 2019 is James Bay’s Julia Michaels collab Peer Pressure- a sparse number that appears so high for me due to it’s beautiful melodies and harmonies as well as romanticised lyrics that make this such a sweet track I’ve come back to many times over the course of the year. Bastille’s 3rd lead single is next at 39, Doom Days beats extremely tough competition from Joy, Another Place and Bad Decisions which we’re all among Bastille’s all-time best for me upon listening to their new album this year. Doom Days however is a dark, pensive number reflecting on the worlds issues of climate change and politics among others and the production against Dan’s haunting voice really captures the thoughts the band wanted to capture. Madonna’s lead single from her brilliant Madame X is next, Medellin- (BuzzJack don’t slaughter me for not putting God Control here), the song is a weird number, using a range of different melodies and sequences at times. The smooth production makes this song as high as it is for me, the reggaeton beat behind the whole song made this instantly memorable and a standout of the year for me and Maluma’s usual soft voice sounds perfect against the song. The best Billie Eilish song she didn’t release this year is next with Dance In The Dark by Au/Ra, the song has an unusual spooky element to it which makes it so encapsulating and interesting a listen. Her voice really suits this eerie type of song as seen also on BuzzJack fave Panic Room and I hope she keeps this up and hopefully can find some commercial success from it. Finally is fave X Factor flop, Four of Diamonds with Walk Away and to put it simply this is just a stellar pop song, the singalong chorus, the slightly reggae-tinged verses, the middle 8 with a quick key change that then reverts back to its original state for some final choruses all make this one of the years best for me!
January 13, 20205 yr Dance In the Dark is quite a tune, not heard that much from Au/Ra besides this and the Camelphat version of Panic Room but I should probably give her some more attention! Giving Medellin a listen (can't believe I've avoided it until now :o ) but it's sounding alright!
