20 Harry Styles - Watermelon Sugar | 1-2-2-2-4-8-…

Though it was never actually promoted to full single status, Harry might as well consider Watermelon Sugar to be the second single from Fine Line as it actually performed really quite well. A #17 peak in the UK is highly impressive when he only managed one top 40 single in his debut era, so for a promotional track to reach that high is really great! It's easy to see why Watermelon Sugar caught on - it's catchy and memorable from the start, laced with hooks, and has a very memorable title. As far as fruit-themed Harry songs go, Watermelon Sugar blows Kiwi out of the water, and its #1 debut is testament to that.

19 Greyson Chance - yours | 9-5-3-4-7-11-16-21-25-31-33-38-28-34-36-38-39-x-16-x

Released as the second single from portaits, yours was an instant album highlight for me. The track channels artists like Taylor Swift, notably in her 1989 era with its sublime synths, to create a track that could easily be about love, but it's actually about friendship. Greyson sings about how he much he cares for a particular friend, and how distance doesn't matter when they can reminisce on the phone at 2am. It's slick and effortlessly catchy, and became an instant top 10 hit upon the album's release last year. It got stuck at #3 in the end, behind Greyson's own track shut up as well as froy's Fix Me - both still to come!

18 Alec Benjamin - Mind Is a Prison | 1-2-…

One of the newest songs in the entire countdown, it's quite impressive that Mind Is a Prison managed to finish this high in the countdown. It's also the most recent #1 single in the countdown, as my final #1 of the year was Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You wasn't eligible to feature. It just goes to show how strong Mind Is a Prison is, and how instant its impact was. I heard the track on two consecutive nights of Alec's Caught in the Middle Tour before it came out, and it sounded so good even without knowing it in advance. The lyrics talk of being trapped inside your own mind with your worries, and no matter how you try to avoid them, you still end up back inside. It's a sad track, but Alec conveys it so brilliantly with his excellent songwriting.

17 Boy In Space feat. SHY Martin - On a Prayer | 1-1-4-7-13-…

It's funny because this is Boy In Space's sixth appearance in my countdown, but I don't feel like I've really spoken about him in any sort of detail. Here's a little backstory - I actually only discovered Boy In Space (real name Robin Lundbäck) when he supported Alec Benjamin at his Caught in the Middle Tour, so it's quite apt that this particular section has two tracks that I discovered at the same tour. Attending both London dates meant I had 24 hours to listen to the Boy In Space songs I discovered before I heard them again, and it was amazing! All seven of his songs debuted in my chart that week, and six of them feature in my EOY top 300. On a Prayer is my favourite of them all, a track about moving on and speaking up. It's a collaboration with SHY Martin, and was the first #1 hit for both artists. Interestingly, Robin used to be a member of boyband JTR, who scored a #5 hit with Centre of Everywhere back in 2015 (EOY #121), so this is a new best position for him in any sort of capacity, as well as beating SHY Martin's only previous hit, The Ocean.

16 Why Don't We - I Still Do | 1-1-3-7-13-15-20-29-36-38-x-23-32-x

Not quite registering another track in the EOY top 10, Why Don't We still manage a strong showing as their 2019 releases are now complete. I Still Do was the seventh of twelve, released at the end of July, and it became one of the defining songs of my summer. It spent two weeks at #1, one of a small club of tracks to manage that over 2019 and is their second-longest running hit of the year. It's a pure-pop track with tropical influences, and it's really very catchy. I think it's an underrated one too - all of their 2019 releases on tour were performed at the end of the set, while I Still Do was shoved in halfway through their older tracks for some reason! It still went down very well live so I'm not really complaining :kink:

15 Ava Max - Torn | 2-3-1-4-4-7-11-18-30-35-x

The most undeserved flop of 2019? Absolutely. Ava Max scored a huge breakthrough hit with Sweet But Psycho, hitting #1 in the UK and top 10 in the US. Follow-up So Am I seemed to kill some momentum despite being a cute #13 hit in the UK, but any remaining goodwill seemed to die with Torn. Why, though? Torn is a perfect slice of pop music, with strong production and a very catchy melody. It became Ava's first #1 hit in my chart, and dare I say that I actually prefer it to Sweet But Psycho? Both are great of course though! It seemed that not even Buzzjack fell in love with this song like I did, Ava's had quite a hard time post-SBP, but I'm so glad we got this absolute banger.

14 Harry Styles - Adore You | 1-2-3-…

His most recent single, Harry Styles' Adore You is probably hindered a little by recency in this countdown. I try my best to rank newer songs fairly among the older songs, but it's difficult with less time to make memories with newer tracks before I compile my EOY! Adore You made a pretty strong bid, though. I heard it live within two weeks of its release, and it came with its really impressive video, including a trip to Eroda (and the iconic promotional campaign that preceded it). Adore You is probably Harry's most commercial solo track to date, but it doesn't sound remotely out of place on Fine Line. Harry has one more song to come - can Lights Up repeat Sign of the Times and go all the way to #1?

13 Sofía Reyes feat. Rita Ora & Anitta - R.I.P. | 1-3-4-5-10-14-19-25-32-x

When I saw Rita Ora was teaming up with Latin queens Sofía Reyes and Anitta, I was really excited. I've liked a lot of Sofía's music to date, and Rita never puts a foot wrong, so R.I.P. had a lot of hype (despite the annoying fact of it sharing a name with Rita's solo breakthrough). It really delivered, too. First listen had me thinking "wtf" I can't lie, but I very quickly ended up loving the song and it became the first #1 for Sofía and Anitta, and the eleventh for Rita, just a week after Only Want You returned to #1.

12 BTS feat. Halsey - Boy With Luv | 1-3-5-8-15-17-19-20-24-31-27-31-36-x

My interest in BTS had been growing and growing for a while - in 2018, IDOL became their first top 10 hit in my chart, and I was quite intrigued to hear their new MAP OF THE SOUL : PERSONA project. However, Boy With Luv really surprised me. I never expected them to challenge for my #1 single but Boy With Luv managed it with ease, and served some really strong longevity too. It became the second K-Pop #1 in my chart, following Kiss and Make Up by Dua Lipa & BLACKPINK. It led to me attending their first Wembley Stadium show, and the atmosphere was so special even for someone who's not quite as wrapped up in the BTS fandom as those around me were. Bring on MAP OF THE SOUL : 7 next month!!

11 Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello - Señorita | 1-2-2-2-4-5-6-8-14-18-21-24-34-x

Despite loving both Shawn and Camila, I never truly appreciated their first collaboration I Know What You Did Last Summer like I wanted to. I still enjoyed it, but I'd say it ranks quite low for both artists at this point in their careers. Therefore, when the surprise news of Señorita came, I was really hoping for something better. It took just one lesson for my hopes to be realised - Señorita was faaaaar better...! It became Shawn's sixth #1, and Camila's very first as a solo artist after Havana was unlucky to run into Rita Ora's Anywhere in its mammoth six-week stint at #1. The theatrics and PR stunt of their relationship that followed became quite tedious but I still really love the song, and I was so delighted to see it hit #1 on both sides of the Atlantic!

10 Ruel - Painkiller | 10-4-2-7-6-13-1-3-9-16-20-25-31-40-x-18-21-26-36-x-37-x

Into the top 10 we go, and we kick things off with Australian singer/songwriter Ruel. 2019 saw Ruel experience his best year yet, and he's only just getting started. After two top 5 hits in 2018, Painkiller joined the ranks. I was pretty hyped for his comeback, because I knew that while debut EP Ready was strong, he still had the potential to do even better. That's pretty strong praise when songs like Younger and Dazed & Confused were already so mature.

When Painkiller debuted, it made quite a lukewarm impact. The song was good, the video was excellent (once again - Ruel music videos don't disappoint), and it debuted at #10 in my chart in half a week of impact. It climbed to #4 the week after - not bad, but not quite reaching the heights I thought Ruel's comeback single could make. It then climbed to #2 behind Shawn Mendes' If I Can't Have You, growing by the week, and actually holding its own across some of the busiest times of the year.

Eventually, Painkiller became Ruel's first ever #1 single in my chart. Its boost came after I saw Ruel live at The Garage in London, the first of two Ruel gigs I attended in 2019. It was one of the biggest tour effects of the year, brushing past the new music of the week before (the When It's Midnight / Never Really Over / Find U Again / Ritual / etc week) to easily claim #1. Painkiller has since become Ruel's longest-running #1, and set its parent EP, Free Time, up to be absolutely huge in my album chart. Painkiller changed the game for Ruel, and I can't wait for his next lead single to change the game again.

9 Bodin - So Good | 4-3-2-3-2-2-5-12-13-21-29-33-39-x

I always love a song that manages to come out of nowhere and surprise me. A track by a total unknown that goes on to become one of my favourite songs of the year. Here's the first of a few pleasant surprises in the top 10, and certainly the most unknown artist of the batch. I don't really know much about Bodin, but a Google search tells me he's Norwegian. Bodin wrote, produced and provided vocals for this track, which is the second of four 2019 releases he put out.

I was recommended this song by our very own RobBob, who sent me the track because it sounds like Katy Perry's Never Really Over. He's not wrong - it really does, it's got some really very similar production, so perhaps it's for the best that So Good hasn't reached a wide enough audience for the similarities to be noticed...!!

So Good actually matched Never Really Over's peak in my chart, though it spent an unlucky three weeks at that position, all behind Lewis Blissett's Killing Butterflies, a track which is still to come so while unlucky, it's not unfair. It spent the most weeks at #2 for a track that peaked there since Lily Allen's Somewhere Only We Know, which spent four weeks at the position in 2013, all behind her own Hard Out Here. He's already shaken off the one-hit-wonder tag with the #24 peaking Somebody, though it remains to be seen if he'll score a hit as big as So Good one day.

Nice to see Mind Is a Prison so high, by far my favourite from what I've heard from him so far, will certainly be in my EOY next year!

Some Harry here as well I see, I took the time to watch the music video for Adore You last week and it really is an epic one! Really well thought out with a good level of quirky-ness as well.

8 Alec Benjamin - Must Have Been the Wind | 1-2-5-4-6-5-9-14-17-23-27-30-30-37-40-39-x-39-x

2018 was quite the momentous year for Alec Benjamin. Let Me Down Slowly became his first #1 single in my chart, and finished the year at #10 in my 2018 EOY chart - a really impressive result for a relative newcomer, even if I'd known of him for two years prior. It's worth mentioning that Let Me Down Slowly actually more than doubled its original chart run in 2019 thanks to its global chart success, rebounding as high as #5, though I decided it wasn't eligible to reappear again. How could he follow up a hit so massive for me, though? By the point of its UK push, Let Me Down Slowly's parent album (or mixtape) Narrated for You had been out for almost six months, and the song itself was a year old, so it was onto something new.

Enter Must Have Been the Wind, an unassuming track that follows where Let Me Down Slowly left off. It's a track about domestic violence - Alec's character in the song hears worrying noises upstairs, and when he knocks and asks if help is needed, the timid girl replies that the noises "must have been the wind." The track packs more of a punch than you'd notice on first listen - it took me a few plays to fully absorb what it was about, but I truly fell in love with it. It's exactly what Alec does best - meaningful and emotional, with his innocent vocals telling a greater story than you'd expect.

Must Have Been the Wind was of course Alec's second #1 on my chart, and it currently stands as his second-longest runner, trailing the obvious. It kickstarted a run of what now stands as four #1s, with all tracks expected to feature on Alec's forthcoming debut album These Two Windows. I heard the track live twice in November too, and I still absolutely adore it, earning Alec his highest EOY position to date. Just another indicator of how fast Alec Benjamin is rising in the ranks of my favourite artists.
